I just got the Iron cross edition.
its installed and updated.
The manual that comes with this game seems to be short on useful information.
I can not get my CH fighter stick, pedals and power lever or anything else setup.

I assume that there are some way to set up the controls while sitting on the ground, but I can not figure out what key strokes that I would use to to do anything useful.

There must be a useful manual that explans how to use the gages etc in the normal mode.
I have spent the last 6 hours trying to figure out whats what in the controls section, but
I have not been able to get a handle on anything.

I am sure that there is some useful info somewhere but I haven't run across anything as yet. \
The Wiki info doesn't seem to have much that I can use so far...

If anyone would have a useful procedure for getting started it would be much appreciated.

Hey man!

I'm glad you've decided to join us. As for getting your hardware working, first make sure your joystick & pedals are recognized by your operating system (the procedure for this varies depending on your OS). Then get yourself to the main menu of RoF (v.1.022) (This is just after you log in). There is a selection at the bottom of the screen called options. Click that and go to the Controls tab. on the left side of this is a list called "category" go to "plane controls" select this. Scroll down in plane controls until you find the entries for plane control: pitch, plane control: roll, plane control; Yaw, etc. For each one, there will likely be an axis already assigned here so click on that once and then move your joystick in the desired direction to assign the appropriate axis to that function in-game. Rudder pedals can be configured in the same fashion (yaw).
For throttle, go to "engine controls" in the category list and assign "engine control: throttle" in the same fashion. If you have a lot of sliders on your joystick, you may find it helpful to assign further axes to things like "enginescontrol: radiator" (useful for in-line, liquid-cooled planes like the Alb D.Va, Fok D.VII, Pfz D.IIIa, SE.5a & Spad S.XIII). "Enginescontrol: mixture" is also a good slider assignment if your wish to fly rotary-engines aircraft (N.28, Camel, Dr.I, etc). Additionally for rotary-engined planes, I would recommend assigning a joystick button to "EngineBlipSwitch" which will help you land (I even use it in combat frequently) it cuts your engine out while keeping it primed (you pulse your engine on & off with it). This is very useful on a plane with three speeds: fast, medium fast and still-pretty-damn-fast.
There is additional setup required for Track IR if you have it (I don't) which I'm sure someone here can help you with. If you are using padlock, the important key is F8 for padlock enemy. The category "pilot head controls" in the controls options has a long list of configurable viewing options. The "camera controls" category configures external views and "weapons controls" is self-explanatory (remember you need to hit "r" or reload before your guns will fire).

As for cockpit references, go here: http://riseofflight.com/en/community/usefulmaterials and look on the right side for the refs by Squid (Thanks a TON, Squid!). Everything you need to know about gages and startup procedures are in there. You can also download gigabytes of sexy skins for all your airplanes from this page, along with Pat Wilson's campaign generator (if you wish to try it instead the stock one).

If you continue to experience issues you can go here: http://riseofflight.com/Forum/viewforum.php?f=353 for answers.

I hope this helps and happy flying,

Fafnir_6

Yes, very helpful.. however as I think more about it, I guess what I was looking for would be a key stroke to bring
up the controls settings page while sitting on the ground by the hanger.
that way I could set the various controls to the buttons on my fighterstick.
There must be a key stroke for bringing up various useful windows while just sitting on the ground.. I hope...

At first look it appears that I have about a months worth of reading before I can even get in the air...

thanks..

You should just be able to hit escape to get to the controls options (I can't confirm right now (I'm not at my RoF computer)). I wouldn't worry about the reading since you can tweak the difficulty settings to make things simplistic until you've got the hang of them. You can then add difficulties incrementally to take advantage of RoF's complex engine management and such.

Cheers,

When in the plane hit Escape - Options - Controlls
Set up your input settings. Push Apply and save the settings under your personal separate profile name as described in this video by Jason:

For setting up the views please read:

Edit Reason: controlls instead of input%

My OS is XP PRO... How do I get the game to recognize my controls?

Just what is the actual procedure for getting my control buttons to control the desired controls?
The way I assume (clicking on a red area and clicking a button and then save) doesn't seem to work.

There are a lot of pre-set control for a joystick that I don't want because they conflict with my way of flying.
How do I get those pre-set settings gone?

I am surprised that the game builders haven't addressed these questions in a FAQ write up.
Or perhaps I am the only one in the whole world that doesn't understand their setup procedures for the game...

As shown in the video:
http://www.youtube.com/user/JasonLVNV#p/u/0/aFUxCm9CIgg

Additional to saving by hitting apply in the controlls grid you have to hit apply at the bottom. ou have to hit apply two times 1. in the gridfield 2. at the bottom of the grid.

Further notice when making the controll input that even the slightest movement of the mouse may be registered before your intended controll movement, button.

Save your changes in a new personal profile. You have to hit apply before to make your changes become valid. The buttons for saving and reloading input configuration files are at the top right of the grid.

While saving your changes in your own separate profile and leaving the standard input file alone you can delete the undesired presets, apply them and save them ans still you have the possibility to reload the standars input file in case you messed things up.

For deleting just hit the x on the right top of the gridfield when it is highlighted.

If this all fails maybe the window user account management might not allow writing the changes.
In this case reinstall ROF in another folder than c:\program files f.g. c:\games\rise of flight or c:\whatever\rise of flight. But I think this case is very unlikely. First make shure you did not miss something.

I noticed by checking your previous posts that you already had a hard time setting up controlls im 2010.

Do not wait for somebody to put up a foolproof detailed explanation just use trial and error and find out by yourself. By saving your changes and with the possiblity to reload previous profiles you do not have to be afraid. actually setting up controlls is quite easy.

Thanks Brummer.

Nothing was happening when I was clicking on what I wanted so assumned that I was doing thing wrong.
kinda like...sometimes it would and sometimes it would not...made me think I had something wrong when , in fact, I didn't.

I did try the game a coupla years ago, but I ran into so many issues that I finely just gave up and threw
it in the back of the drawer. I just ran across it again a few days ago while cleaning stuff up & thought I would try it again along with this new patch.

The Spad seems to fly very nicely, so I will just give-er-a-go & see what happens.

Thanks for your input. I will be sure to read that stuff you referred to.

There is "ALWAYS" a learning curve to go along with a new game. I suspect that there have been many changes (for the better)
since I last tried ROF.
That video you suggested has some very good info to back up what they have done.

Thanks for your help...
