yep, coloured pencils!! A big first for me

The ref photo Im using is on the actor Sam Heughan, he played the part of Geoff Wellum in the TV drama of First Light. The original is a screenshot from that TV show and is A4 in size, the drawing is A2.
If I do put it into next years GAvA show, I'll have to contact both the BBC and also Sam via his agent.

Still a long way to go yet...but having a ball using the colour

so your tracing over this?

I see alot of stuff like this on CGtalk where people just draw over real photos, and i don't get where the "art" comes in? If your just "drawing" an existing photo what's the point?

Nope, you see, the original is about 4" x 5" enlarged to A4, I use my EYE to copy the drawing { freehand } up to 18" x 16".....then I have to use my EYE again, to then lay the colours in and to get it looking the way I want { again slightly different form the original I used}....so, no tracing involved smile..oh and btw, thats the wrong photo smile

Thanks for the comments folks smile

Looking good Puff.
One of my illustration instructors used to pound into our heads "when you change value, change temperature!"
I've never forgotten this, and always take this to heart when rendering an illustration, be it with watercolor in with a 3D program. This is always good advice. Let's take an eye socket for instance. Instead of just brown, consider adding a touch of purple or blue.

Also, don't take the photograph too literally. Don't be afraid to edit out things that, while may be present in the photo, don't necessarily translate into drawing. For instance the strap that's either under his goggles or being reflected from something else. While I'm sure it was there in the photo, it really doesn't serve any purpose and is rather distracting in the drawing.

Glad to see you're still at it.
I still do a hand drawn illustration now and then, but have been training in 3D software for the past 18 months - just to add another tool in the belt so to speak.

Cheers

Looking good! I used to do a lot of colored pencil, and bought some new ones recently, but I've yet to use them very much. I don't seem to have the patience for them like I did when I was younger. After a couple hours of working in a large area, I start wistfully eyeballing my airbrush. (I view this as a personal failing...why should I have less patience than when I was younger? Time goes faster now, for pete's sake)

What brand of pencils are you using, out of curiosity?

I use Faber Castell Polychromos... and when I get a bit fed up...I grab a coffee and go onto RoF ..hence the reason it takes me about 2 months for one drawing lol

A good technique is to start on a mid-tone matte board. (kind of what it looks like Puff is doing here) Only you let the color of the board do a little more of the work. That way you're just punching out the highlights, and knocking in the darkest
areas. This is generally how I work in the medium. A pieces on white illustration board and I came to my senses!
Here's a good example of what I'm talking about - Bill Nelson
