Wow, I hadn't even heard it was in production. Looks like it has possibilities.

Seems a little "Avatar" doesn't it? Rehashing a rehashed type of story.

Considering the story was written somewhere between 1910 and 1940 (I guess they combined some of his books), one could argue that Avatar is a rehash of these books. But then there are those that say Avatar is Pocahontas in a SF setting. smile

Didn't know it was an old book, maybe it's the LOTR of that type of story. Still, wonder if this movie is coming out as a result of Avatar's success. Would be good if they had picked a story that was less similar, it's not like there's a shortage of good sci fi out there.

I'll be waiting for the reviews first before i decide to see this in the theatre. It will definitely at least be a DVD rental though.

I LOVED the John Carter of Barsoom series when I was a kid. I had no idea they were making a movie of it. If they stay reasonably close to the story lines it should be good. Unfortunately, from the trailer, it doesn't look like that's going to happen. Plus, I absolutely hate all the slow-motion and pauses in so many of the latest movies.

Here's some background, in case anybody isn't too familiar with the series:

It's just being called John Carter. Apparently the studio brainiacs are concerned about putting people off if they put "of Mars" in the title.

Fortunately they/we now have the benefit of high resolution radar scans and photographic material, so that the environment can be generated in some detail. Maybe we'll get to see the bulge of Olympus Mons looming on the horizon and travel through Valles Mareneris. smile

Eh, that wouldn't be that great. In reality, the canyon is so large that you can stand on its floor and not see the sides! If you see one cliff face you certainly won't be seeing the other.
The volcano is so large in diameter compared to its height that you can walk, not climb, up the mountain to the caldera.
That plus Mars' smaller size means the horizon should be far closer than on Earth, limiting what you can see in the distance.

right on! yeah, I read the first two books in the series as a kid...never got around to the third book which I was told was the most action-packed swashbuckling adventure of the three? This movie could be a fun adventure...but knowing Hollywood suites I think they will frak it up! LOL poor ERB! sigh

Surely this can't be worse than the most recent high profile sci-fi movies based in Mars: Mission to Mars and Red Planet.

I've read Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy and he described that too, so I know that bit. It doesn't need to be at the widest point, it can be at one of the narrowest point or a side arm.

From a distance, wouldn't you still see the bulge from that 17 mile high mole hill?

They already ruined it... disney needs to go back and reread the books and then reshoot all the scenes with the female lead actress... with a lot less clothes on! smile

Well yeah, but that's just it. It will look like a bulge, not a grand mountain.

Ahhh. A blast from the Golden Age of science fiction (that is, whenever you happened to be about twelve years old!). I guess they could ruin this, but since it's been so long ago that many of us read the series, maybe it won't seem that way. Fingers crossed.
