I thought I'd share my experiences with the 1.2 patch...
Before even thinking of opening Steam, I did a full backup of my Skyrim folder in the Steam Common folder. I also backed up the saved games and preferences folder in the My Games folder in my profile.
Warning!: once you update, your saved games WILL NOT be compatible with earlier versions of Skyrim, so if you go back, you'll loose any progress done with the new version.
Then and only then, I allowed the update.
I only use two or three mods, and then no texture mods, so I had no conflicts with any of that and did not have to disable any data files or change my INI files (that I have modified extensively).
The good news...
- None of the major game breaking (do not allow to play the game) bugs that others have seen.
- Much better mouse response.
- Snappier menus.
- Could be placebo, but it seemed a lot smoother to me.
- Tried a few key reassignments and they seem to work. More tests needed.
- Did not crash on startup with sound quality set to 48000Hz 24 bit
The bad news...
- The weaknesses, resistance (to fire, frost, etc.) and armor damage resistance NOT working. I could kill undead with a single fireball... and I am at level 15. I was also more vulnerable to frost and fire did direct damage, even though I'm wearing a few fire resistant enchanted items.
- Even though the Dragons were not flying in reverse, they do fly in a wonky pattern that makes them look no so majestic anymore.
- A "Skyrim has stopped working" CTD exiting Whiterun after 45 minutes of play. The only one I have ever had of this type. Previous crashes had been the crash direct to desktop type (progress?)
Not a patch Bethesda can be proud of, but not as bad as I expected.
I'll go back to my backed up 1.1 with no Steam required version.
