I was wondering what hardware/software was needed to create tutorial videos of games? Hopefully screen-capture the game and be able to record/edit/insert text or voice later on.

Thanks!

Not much is needed. Screen capture software like FRAPS, or maybe Camtasia. Video editing options are plenty. VirtualDub is free and not hard to use. There are also a few guncam recording tools, such as Guncam (java) and Growler Guncam.

There was another video editing software, quite new, with a free trial. I think I posted it before, but can't recall the name at the moment.

For people wanting to record HDMI via hardware, there's the Black Magic's Intensity Pro card, or Intensity Shuttle USB box.

Sony's Vegas Movie Studio is a nice and cheap program. It is a stripped down version of Vegas Pro, but for basic videos it has plenty of options. I do not know how much it costs where you live, but it is constantly on sale for $50 or so at Fry's in the USA. I believe Adobe also has a stripped down version of Premiere for a similar price.

For recording I use FRAPs.

Hardware? A fast system, FRAPs kills frame rates. CPU makes all of the difference in rendering a video. I believe the newest version of Vegas uses the video card as well, but it is still CPU based. A quad core would be a nice place to start, but it is not a requirement.

This thread covers video editing software:

I knew I posted on the subject not too long ago. smile

[EDIT] And for audio editing, you can't go wrong with Audacity.

Hmmm... is there a free video capture software? I'm currently using FRAPS but free version only. I don't want to buy something then end up not using it (if video editing is not for me).

£24 for FRAPS seems a little too steep at the moment.
