The year is 2020.

Tensions between the U.S. and China have been running high as China has pursued an aggressive strategy to establish long-term regional dominance in the Western Pacific and to recover Taiwan, which it has historically viewed as a renagade province.

The past few weeks have seen China escalate the situation by sending fighter aircraft to harrass U.S. long-range ELINT electronic intelligence gathering flights over international waters along the Chinese coast.

The ELINT flights were ordered in response to an increase in electronic communications between key military communication stations in China.

Now, in a further escaltion, the Chinese aircraft carrier Shi Lang is reported to be sailing south along the Chinese coast from her home port at Dalian in northeast Liaoning Province towards the Taiwan Strait between mainland China and Taiwan.

A U.S. Carrier Strike Group has been ordered into the China Sea to monitor the situation and escort the ELINT flights.
