It looks very familiar. I'm really looking forward to this movie. I'm really curious as to how it'll tie into the Alien franchise. It'll be great (I hope).

I'm getting more and more excited about a movie set in that universe and time frame, but not about the usual Alien conflict. Fleshing out the time in general is really going to be fun and good sci if. Maybe good enough to kick off a big budget epic sci fi renaissance?

I like the direction he's takin'. A fresh perspective on a familiar universe.

Having just rewatched Alien and Blade Runner in the past couple of months, I'm also eager to see him finally return to SF. I'm not getting my hopes up for an "Alien" story though. I think he's tried hard enough to debunk that.

No. Absolutely not. They squeezed it dry. He (the xenomorph) did very well. (He laughs) He survived, he’s now in Disneyland in Orlando, and no way am I going back there. How did he end up in Disneyland? I saw him in Disneyland, Jesus Christ!
Oh well... let's see an original story for a change.

I have very little doubt that "Prometheus" will be a fantastic sci-fi film and I'm glad that they are taking this in some new directions instead of re-treading old ground. If Scott wasn't involved though I'd be much more apprehensive.

Was originally intended as a prequel to Ridley Scott's Alien, but Scott decided to turn it into an original film with Noomi Rapace (who was already set to star in the prequel) still in the cast as one of five main characters. Some time later however it was confirmed that while the movie will take place in the same universe as Alien, and greatly reference that movie, it will, for the bigger part, be an original movie and not a direct prequel

Pods of some sort, face sucker action and the space jockey seat. Definitely an Alien tie in there. Cool to see Noomi in there. About the only good part of the new Sherlock Holmes flick.

Is it just me, but at the beginning of the trailer (when it looked like two engines), i thought it looked a lot like sereity from firefly.
I thought the same. I think that was done on purpose really.

it's gonna be loong six months... I really really like the new approach to the Space Jockeys/Xenomorphs theme, glad it won't be the prequel or reboot
only one gripe, is it me, or the Space Jockey ship lost that biomechanical feel to it to be more strictly technic? Of course might be this is the different vessel (and planet)

Cool! I know about this info.
What other info does anyone about this clip in Prometheus? (i've been too lazy/busy to use The Google to search for info ATT. I was more curious if anyone knows it's place (if any) in the actual film since it is said to be part of the 'viral campaign' to promote the film. Will there be a flashback to this scene? Will the film start with this clip? Will this not be seen at all in the film?

I don't think anyone knows that except for those who were involved in making the film. I've not found any publicly released info that would answer these questions.

Ugh. did anyone else get a good look at those *ahem* space suits on that site? They look more like the fantastic four than the suits in the original alien.

Not to mention if you saw the AvP movies, they managed to work both the names of Weyland (the explorer who led the ill-fated expedition to Antarctica) and Yutani (scene at the end of AvP Requiem, involving getting a hold of one of the plamsa casters). I'll be curious to see if those films are canon or not in the greater scheme of the Aliens universe.

I sure hope not! The first AvsP was passable but Requiem was total trash.
I have the reverse opinion.
The first AvP was horrid. The preds gave Sanah Lathan's character a trophy instead of skinning her and taking her skull? Who wrote that, Walt Disney? And that stupid moving pyramid? Bleh!
I like AvP2. It felt like fan-fic but, it remained true to the brutal legacy these films developed.

Well, in P2, they gave Danny Glover's character a pistol and let him live after he killed one of their own, so I think the precedent was there for them to respect capable humans.

Exactly.
However, I think the way it was portrayed in AvsP was a bit cheesy with the surviving predator showing Sanaa's character how to fashion her own weapon. I remember reading one critic's review saying something like "I almost expected the predator to start painting her nails".
In Predator 2, it just "worked" and didn't seem hokey at all in the scene where the elder predator gave Danny Glover's character the flintlock pistol.

Bill Paxton was in that too? Please tell my his name was also Hudson!
A little known fact, there, Normie: Bill Paxton is the only guy to be killed by the Terminator, Alien, and Predator.

I was in the cinema last weekend (probably for the last time in this town, the theater is going to be torn down soon and chances are low that there is one investor found to build a new one in such a small town.... ) and saw the trailer for the first time on the big screen. Can`t wait....

We went through that in the 1980s, the local cinema closed and left a 180km drive to the nearest cinema that prompted me to get into home cinema and now finally I have a dedicated cinema room in the house.

Nice! Is that in a basement or did you block out windows? I wish we had basements in MS, it's like we get half the house for the sq ft compared to the rest of the country.

it is in a garage I converted, which the previous owner of the house had converted into an office and a storage area you can see the transformation here
Pretty cool. I don't go to the theater anymore either, but I just have a 50" TV and surround sound. My house doesn't have an area dark and large enough to turn into a theater, and I'm not willing to remodel and give up any areas of the house for that. Not yet, anway.

Well it has taken since 1983 to get to where I am today and I only 'finished' the cinema about nine months ago. We have a 50" pio plasma in the lounge but we seldom watch movies on it, my son does use it for his playstation a lot tho. The grand kids come round to watch their movies on the big screen, tuesday night it was the turn of Tintin looked quite good and they enjoyed it. I have a playstation in there too and use it for GT5 mainly, I have had my PC in there and tried to play Steelbeasts on it but it is too much to try and take in the whole image in one glance, so while it looks great playability was not so good.

Yeah but compared to a LOT of places that sq footage is half(or less) the price. AL is about as inexpensive to live in as MS. It's good to live in the south.

Is it just me or does that trailer look like a remake of the first alien? A lot of the same imagery is going on. The cockpit scene(layout of the cockpit and the windows in the front especially), the landing and excursion shots, the skinny white guy looking ill, the small breasted brunette in a tight white top...

Wanna bet that slick blonde guy is an android, and he will facilitate things for whatever nasty critters are out there? (Ash liked the Alien a bit too much!) After checking out Weyland's speech trailer, and these 2 last trailers, I wouldn't be surprised.
And if this movie is supposed to be a prequel to the Alien series, nobody from this crew will make it alive. But curiously enough, the Nostromo will wake its crew after picking up the alien ship's beacon signal.

That's not the Alien because it has no tail or pipe-things on its back. However, I think we're supposed to infer a resemblance/lineage between them based on the bio-mechanoid design.
The ship is like the Nostromo, yes, and in fact I think it safe to say this film will feel a lot like Alien without it being Alien because it's meant as a prequel. If you're looking for something TOTALLY different, don't see it.

Does anyone know how far before Alien this is supposed to be set as the pilot was fossilised when they found it there wasn't it?

That's an excellent question and I don't think that has been disclosed yet. We know that Aliens is 57 years after Alien and Alien 3 is pretty much immediately after Aliens and Alien Resurrection is about 200 years after Alien 3 but that's it.
I'm trying to remember if the viral campaign short video with Guy Pearce showed what year it was. I don't think it did.

I think it did, and if I remember right, it was before 2100, which I thought was a little soon. But maybe that speech was set a long time before the majority of the events in Prometheus.
Yeah, I just went back through this thread - 2023.

I'm sure the bulk of the film takes place quite a bit after 2023 because that's only 11 years from now and there's no way we are going to have that kind of deep space exploration tech in 11 years. It wouldn't be scifi anymore but an alternate reality!

The corporate timeline for Weyland Industries on its 'official' website says Project Prometheus is underway as of January 1, 2073. Gotta love this kind of marketing for a film.

yeah, the date of 2023 is what prompted to ask earlier in the thread about how guy Pearce fits )if at all) into the Prometheus film which looks much later in the 21st/22nd century. from what Jaz states above it sounds like Prometheus occurs in 2073? ya think?

And a well written essay on the ALIEN (I) movie. 2, in my book, was more akin to an extraterrestrial bughunt with the Level boss addition, and had little to the effect of the original movie in capturing the desolate despair of the chasm the Nostromo crew found itself in, which was supported by believable acting. Not to take away from Cameron, i liked Avatar, and Aliens is a entertaining movie in it's own right. Just less prone to provoce the sort of emotions and thoughts the original movie did. It´s not horror but more of an action movie. http://www.prometheus-movie.com/articles/9
“[The] extreme end of science lies in the abyss: the Alien….Ash, the robot science officer, is ‘misrecognized’ as being human, that his ‘desire to know—the desire of science—is responsible for the entry of the Alien into the spacecraft,’ and that the ‘pure quest for knowledge results in evil’” (Schwartz 30). Dismembered for his subterfuge, Ash describes the threat they face as, “a perfect organism. Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility…a survivor, unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality.” He admires what he sees as its purity. This assessment reflects his own identity and that of his superiors as the perfect organism he envisions. They become in their evolutionary eloquence that pure, unclouded survivor - an aggregate of faceless cogs in a Company that is as much a monster as the alien which stalks the crew of the Nostromo. “[The Alien] is in all respects a superior product of competitive evolution and resembles nothing so much as that other superorganism, itself victor in an evolutionary struggle: the multinational (soon to be interstellar) corporation. In the system of the narrative, the Alien is the double, we might say the biological analogue, of the Company”).
I have a feeling Prometheus will be along these lines, and i guess this is what Ridley ment by "scents of ALIEN DNA", and I like it.

The strength of going from Alien to Aliens was that, unlike most movie franchises, both movies were very well made, they were completely different approaches and still managed to stay in the same universe perfectly. Most movies just rewrite the original, which doesn't do as much for the franchise as developing it with a different approach. Plus, you can be in different movie "moods" and enjoy one or the other. I think that's how Prometheus will add to it all--by being different and not just a copy of any of the other movies in the universe.

Agreed. I think that's why the focus changed during production. Initially it was going to be a straight prequel and tie-in to "Alien" but along the way Scott made the creative decision to make Prometheus stand on its own and be more unique while still having the connection to Alien. Anyway, I am eagerly awaiting release day!

I'd love to see more of that viral style video. The universe in which Weyland-Yutani exists must have lots of details that the writers of the Alien movies and now Prometheus have had laying around just begging to be made into a Silmarillion-like history and background account.

Cut a deal with her. Tell her that if she goes and watches Prometheus you'll go and watch whatever chick flick she wants to watch. That usually works for a friend of mine.

This has been my standard operating procedure for a long time. I get to see the sci-fi and war movies I want but I had to suffer through nauseating crap like "Valentine's Day" and "The Vow". I guess it was worth it.

There is one thing that I'm very curious about. With the original "Alien", I don't believe it was revealed at all in the media ahead of time that Ash was an android. I wonder why a different approach was taken this time with "Prometheus"?

In Alien, the crew didn't know Ash was an android, and it was a big plot twist when it was revealed. Since they are advertising David as an android, I suppose the crew in Prometheus is aware of this from the beginning. No reason to keep a secret if it will not be a plot twist.
Starnge though, the David android is described as a "8th generation Weyland type android."
Ash was a Hyperdyne Systems 120-A/2, so it seems they are from different manufacturers?
At least we know the origin of the distre... I mean warning signal Nostromo received from LV-426 and the Company's Special Order 937. (wink, wink)

Even though is not a propper prequel, it is still connected with what comes next. Continuity would be nice.

I gave you continuity, but nice pic
David 8 (so far) looks like he is part of the Weyland Industries, while later films are set further in the future where Weyland does not exist, hence Weyland Yutani in the first Alien movie. Aliens vs Predators and Requiem, if accepted as canon, explained how Yutani came to be, and why Hyperdine were introduced - plus why Bishop looks like he does. I'd post links, but not sure the 'Captain Alien Nerd' picture is that easy to find..

An interview I was reading today about Colonial Marines making of. One of the game developers said he believed that their conversations with Ridley Scott inspired him to revisit the universe, and make Prometheus.

I wonder if David 8 plays the knife game. Or if he dislikes cornbread.

At the end, I think the return to Wayland and not having "Hyperdyne" involved at all, is Ridley's way of bringing the hammer down on Jim Cameron for including stuff as an inside joke that should not have been part of the canon.
It would had been awesome however, if Cameron would had been allowed to use Cyberdyne instead. Going from T-800s to Ash would not have been that far fetched.
-----
Hold on... I think I have a story here.
How about Weyland acquired most of the android technology from the Tyrell Corporation after they went down after the untimely death of it's founder, and then Hyperdyne was a subsidiary (that actually was Cyberdyne in a timeline where Judgement Day never happened, they had to change names...Skynet and all that), and due to it's large investments in what surely would be a failed David model and Prometheus mission, Wayland temporarily moved production to the low cost (probably in another colony - they had to leave earth due to the whole Skynet fiasco) Hyperdyne facilities, that resulted in the production of the low quality 120-A/2 models using some of the Skynet subroutines, and...
(And remember kids... It's all pretend...)

Trivia question: The knife game in "Aliens" was inspired from a knife game in which film?
Okay, I give up. But while searching I looked at Wikipedia's entry and it referred to the knife game under these names:
Quote:
The knife game, nerve, bishop, or 5-finger fillet
Heh heh, Bishop. I wonder if it's named after the character from Aliens or vice versa. Or pure coincidence.

Not just action but that poster also makes the connection between Prometheus and Alien unmistakably clear. The fact that the crashing ship is the derelict ship that the crew in Alien finds and it also establishes that planet LV426 in "Aliens" is also the same planet that the Prometheus crew will be visiting.

LOL Meh, it's the typical, standard Hollywood studio advertising crap that is done on movie posters now. As if most people pay attention to or care what other movies a director has made before when they are thinking about whether or not to watch an upcoming movie.

So. What do you guys think the real link to Alien will be in the end? Besides the alien ship, planet etc. I'll throw this out: the eggs are shown already, but not in an organic form. I think that the Alien we know will take it's shape due to something that happens in this movie, somehow getting mixed with roughly humanoid appearance, but not carbon based. The aliens are silicon based or something, since clearly their own acid blood doesn't affect them. The host determines what form the alien chest popper takes. Nothing has ever been said about them feeding off of the host though, just incubating. I wonder if they could come from one of the synthetics and if that would change them? Somehow the eggs are going to have to change from the metal pods into what we know. There's bound to be an "aha!" moment at the end.

I hope so, I'm getting sick of seeing key movie set pieces in trailers I'm not quick enough to avoid.
I mean that massive spaceship explosion would, presumably, have been a real wow moment.
haha Yeah, I want to know nothing in advance of the film, but then I cannot stop myself from watching and reading about any new Prometheus discoveries! I need to put myself into solitary confinement for the next 3 weeks! LOL

It makes sense for 2 reasons. The international box office is now bigger than the domestic US box office and most of Ridley Scott's films have done better internationally than they have done in the US.

The Prometheus planet has been quoted as LV-223 in a number of sources
Just back from taking the son to watch The Avengers, quite enjoyed it too, but, anyway, there was a trailer for Prometheus in 3D and it looked very good, the son got quite excited and said he really wanted to see it, one more day to wait until the booking line opens for the Imax cinema in Eindhoven

Just saw the latest trailer in theatres tonight...uh...WOW?!?
This is gonna be SO much better than the lame AVP or even Alien 3-4-5...seems to me the studio gave Mr. Scott whatever he needed. It was actually beautiful.
One downside though...the latest trailer gives too much of the story away, something that is increasingly pissing me off about movie trailers.

Bah, somehow thought there was another lame one alongside "Resurection"...maybe I somehow associated "Predators" along with the AvP series...whatever.
Anyway the new movie looks great!
Notice the interior of the alien building/ship, and the "eggs"...resembles a steel/fabricated version of the "biological/grown/excreted/disgorged" interiors and eggs?! Almost like the Alien ship was a copy with bio capabilities instead of steel tooling. Of particluar note are the "eggs" now looking like vases, and the ceilings looking like reinforced by tube bracing, than a bony ribcage.

Unlike AvsP Requiem though, at least "Predators" was a pretty decent film.
Eh...nah, I disagree...I thought Predators sucked pretty bad too, not EVERYTHING about it, but mostly I thought it sucked too. Female "IDF sniper" who couldnt even hold her rifle in kneeling position?!? Fishburne stranded on the planet surviving all this time, but doesnt survive 10 minutes of the movie?!? Low budget. Alien dog-warthogs that survive GE/Dillon miniguns but are stopped cold by 9mm handguns?
I dunno, but multiple Preds vs mexican cartel killers and murderous doctors seems a washout to me.

It couldn't be the same planet. In Alien, the ship is intact. By Aliens, decades later, it only has a crack or two in it. That ship is getting BLASTED apart. When it hits, little will be left.
As for why, why not? An alien race having just ONE ship? Seems unlikely.
