That model certainly has a history. I guess the spinner works OK now? Not really so difficult was it?? Nice skin though! Oh, BTW. The other skin sounds fine.

Ralf,
the Staffel was in Sicily and wearing air superiorty gray (74/75/65) camo and provided Italian Sand color that was field painted. So, no 2 aircraft looked the same. Other Stafflen were in Tunisia and carried the Desert camo which ran down to mid fuselage. Fran-Zee is gathering information on units from both areas and I will most likely end up skinning both color sets.

Cool scheme, seems an odd one. Do you have any pics of the actual planes, would be interesting to see them

Hi Guys,
Interesting colour scheme - I had read somewhere that they used Italian paints from time to time so this is clearly an example, though why they did not use Sandgelb and Himmelblau I don't know - perhaps a bit too light? OK, here comes the "but" you all expect from me by now - tropical filter is acceptable but not quite right - as shown in Mikes "profile" should have a wider tubular forward end after the ribbed bit. Only a small point and down to the modellers not Mike. Still ruddy good.
Cheers,
Pete the pain.

Hi Mike thanks for the info i noticed we posted the same two pics but the modeller has used his as a reference to the jg27 bf109 whereas yours states jg53.So i think the poor guy may has his planes mixed up? I do not have the Jagdwaffe books he references but would like to get a few more for my collection, i mainly have the 190 series and only one 109 which covers the E series. They are some very nice camos yes, i would hate to be a historian researching skins and trying to determine correct colours etc , i found another different colour scheme but it did not reference which of the two pilots planes it was.Very similar craft, especially with the same markings , tail and similar kill tally

Mike,
Now that is more like Sandgelb/Himmelblau but with the grays - like it.
Pete

Coming along nice Mike i found that ' yellow 1 ' as well ..and then a variation where the yellow was red but a different red to the rudder .Skinning. always ends up being 90 % research and 10 % actual painting time i think that is half of the enjoyment in it .Plus we can tell the lady that we simply have to have the book, we dont really want it but historical authenticity demands it Cheers Mike

That´s really an interesting camo and photo interpretation of Götz´ G-2. This would be a standard RLM 74/75/76 camo "freshed-up" with sand-yellow of German or Italian origin. Just for information - the Luftwaffe used the somewhat brighter Italian sand-yellow before developing their own RLM 79 camo colour. III./JG 53 "Pik-As" was operating in Sicily and in Tunisia, changing the continents several times. This means III./JG 53 had to adapt their camo for service over arid and desert grounds as well as for the green surfaces of Sicily (winter time there is rain time) and over the blue-gray Mediterranean. Standard desert camo for the desert was the same as your "Black 6" (a famous example ) and this was delivered to Tunisia. European-based Geschwader received standard air-superiority camo resp. ordered it. The air-superiority scheme was designed for operations in great heights and over sea surfaces and not for sorties on low-level. (E.g. the green/brown camo for fights over Russia which took place close to ground level) For Götz´"Yellow 1": I think the fogging over of the fuselage sides with RLM 79 seems to be correct. Maybe field-applied RLM 80 was added towards the top of the fuselage, partially covering RLM 74/75, but is not recognizable on the photo. What cannot be seen is the surface of the wings. RLM 74/75 would be suited for operations over the Med but over the desert this would not be suitable. Personally I´m quite sure RLM 79 - and maybe portions of RLM 80 were applied on the wing surfaces, too - in whatever form (blotches, thin overspray, meandering etc.) Who knows? NASM´s Bf 109G-6 "White 2" (orig. "Yellow 4") for instance originally had its 74/75/76 camo totally oversprayed with RLM 70/80. I think every try might be worth while. Concerning Franz Götz: He ended the war as Geschwaderkommodore of JG 26. In rememberance of his good times with JG 53 he painted the "Pik-As" badge on the fuselage sides of his fighter. This plane survived the war and is exhibited in the Champlin Fighter Museum, Phoenix, Arizona. It´s the very rare Fw 190D-13/R11 "Yellow 10" Hope this helps Good work

Thanks for the insight Fran.
The 109G-2 will definately be done for both of the Geschwader.

Do I hear a cry for a HR Desert camo War Hawk MS set?
Just wait a bit more. My hands have flared up in the past week, and I'm forced to take a break from things 3dz/computer.
Just too painful to do anything to complicated. I'm hoping after a short rest I'll be able to get going again.
I've got my WWI Destroyer and French church, to finish off as well as the DH-2, and P40, which all are nearly finished, and just need a bit of work to make them ready to post.
