I am trying a pre-release version of the 12.1 Cat's and found some interesting (and long overdue) new features:

- Support for individual Application Profiles
- Support for Crossfire Profiles
- DX11 Multithreaded rendering eek

Overall working very nice. Can't believe I'm finally sending my trusty RadeonPro to better pastures.

clapping dance boing yeah

Cool really looking forward to Crossfire Profiles, as I'm having to switch crossfire on and off a lot lately due to Skyrim losing 20FPS with crossfire on... at least with a profile it would be easier.

XFire profiles will allow us to make our own profiles for Xfire and applications.

instead of having to wait for Driver updates for new profiles.

Thanks goodness! I have been using ATI Tray Tools to set CCC settings and CrossfireX for the past two years...

I've also been usin' ATT, but just how much can you tweak usin' the new CCC? Is it worth the switch, and can you save those profiles and use 'em w/ subsequent driver releases?

Thanks for the heads up on 12.1.

I notice AMD says the benefits only apply to HD5000 and HD6000 (not HD3000 or HD4000 series).

Skyrim is my game of choice currently. I'm running the 4GB user-generated patch and LOADS of 2048x2048 graphics upgrades with all graphics setting maxxed (except only 4AA and 8AF which is done for personal preference reasons). Nearly always smooth high FPS but does drop to around 13-15FPS momentarily on very rare occasion (in a certain spot when looking in a certain direction). I have Crossfire Activated generally but I understood that using the CAP driver Crossfire was automatically disabled in Skyrim. Be interesting if 12.1 really does improve Skyrim FPS where it counts -- the low FPS parts.

Does this mean you can set profiles for individual exes/programs like you can through the Nvidia control panel?

If so, I wish they released this update earlier as it was one of my biggest reasons for not choosing an AMD card.

I'm wondering the same thing myself, as I fiddled around with these drivers just a while ago but am not sure if a profile can now be tied to an EXE. Hopefully someone else here can chime in on that.

The Skyrim beta-mod I use to measure FPS and control in-game lighting broke with the beta-driver 12.1. Before de-installing the mod, I noticed that the low FPS were similar to before 12.1.

I'll keep using 12.1 -- as long as it only disagrees with beta-mods.

Regarding the profiles:

YES you can now associate individual EXE files to visual settings and Crossfire settings. Can't say much about crossfire, since I don't use it, but I created a new profile for RAGE (always had to change settings in CCC to application preference, and never played nice with RadeonPro to set a profile), and it worked like a charm.

I like these drivers a lot.

Some additional details on this 12.1 driver here:

Looks pretty good will be installing and testing with CF later today.

The new profiles are working great, I was able to setup specific games like Skyrim not to use crossfire and it worked, finally AMD is bringing some well needed features to their drivers, maybe I will quit drooling at the GTX 580 and give my 5870's a bit more of a chance.

Question: how do I get my saved profiles to show up in the Application Profiles drop-down box? When I click the Save button, a dialog box opens asking me to navigate to the EXE file I want to use, but once I do that, all I still see is the <<New Application>> option in the drop-down box (as shown here: http://images.anandtech.com/doci/5223/ProfileSelection.png ).

When you click on Save and then navigate to the .exe that the profile is for you should have seen something like:

And then now when you click in the Profiles you should see the new one listed there:

They kick in automatically when the system sees that .exe starting up, working good for me, is that not working the same for you?

They seem to be kicking in for me (as I see the same stuff in your first image), but I'm not seeing them in the list. I'm gonna fiddle with it some more to see if I can figure it out.

Alright, it's working correctly for me now. I needed to do a full wipe of my drivers and start from scratch. yep

Ah I hate when that happens, glad it's working for you now.

So far I am pretty impressed with this preview driver, working well for me even with no CAPs installed but it seems to already have profiles for most of my games ( FSX, Skyrim etc).

Here's hoping it signals a new era of good drivers for AMD which has been one of the things NV seemed to kick their butt on, but NV have had their own driver troubles of late.

Yep, I'm liking them as well. It certainly is nice to not have to manually load a profile every time I load a game. Some games don't like the different Crossfire profiles (such as ROF and Black Shark), but that's something that's easily overcome by fiddling with the settings.

AMD has released an update to the 12.1 Preview Drivers (12.1a), with few enhancements, but mostly directed at improving RAGE and preparing for an upcoming patch (??!!!):

Quote:
Additional changes for upcoming update of Rage
Resolves some new texture corruption issues introduced by the latest version of the game
Improved performance ~5%
Smoother game play and reduces multicore sync points
Fixed mapbuffer failures when switching maps on 32-bit systems.
Fixed a game crash when switching maps back and forth on 32 and 64bit systems

http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/Catalyst121apreviewdriver.aspx

Also, the latest CAPS have been released:

http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/crossfirex-app-profiles.aspx

Works good!

Does the HDR work properly with DCS titles on 69xx series cards ? i.e. have the white flashing squares buggered off ?!

Thanks for the heads up, I have been loving the 12.1 preview, but was super disappointed with Rage's blurry performance, I would never have predicted that my longtime favorite Id and Carmack could put out such a crappy performing PC game, hell hath frozen over indeed... 25 GB dowload of blurry ass crappy textures, Quake2 with HD mod looks and plays better IMHO... Since I couldn't stand it long enough to get to the cool turret weapons or anything yet.

Anywho I am hoping this will make Rage decent.

It'll make it pretty but as to the game itself...

Thread hijack - I was utterly disappointed by Rage. They had all the elements there - the developers, the AI, the graphics, all the elements to make an epic game but then dropped the ball.

I was afraid of that, the little bit I played did not seem to hook me like the Dooms/Quakes of yesteryear and this is even coming from someone who loved Borderlands and was ok that Rage seemed to borrow many ideas from it...

I will still try stick with it and hope I find something to love in Rage, but yeah Carmack has seriously fallen into mediocrity, he should have retired when he was on top and stuck to his rockets and ferraris nowadays instead of making also-ran console games like this.
