Why did they have such a funky stick? How did it operate and why was it more like a yoke than a stick? I recently read Angels Three-Six by Chuck Lehman and expected him to comment on it. I find that to be the funkiest stick I've ever seen in a plane (though probably there have been stranger ones). Here are pics of the stick: F-106 F-102

Early HOTAS set up maybe (would make sense for a high speed interceptor since you don't want to be looking at anything but the radar in the final phase of the intercept) plus limited lateral room in cockpit since it really is cramped from side to side. Cockpit

The stick setup was for the radar interface. Remember, this aircraft was designed to be a bomber interceptor using radar (a lot of manipulation and head down) at high altitudes using nuclear-tipped missiles. The left side of the stick was used for the radar manipulation. The right side functioned as a control stick for the aircraft. Not really a yoke at all, but a stick with a side extension for the radar controls.

I love where they put the radar. Right there high up and in front. Excellent placement.

Mao, Cat Is that sarcasm or do you think it is the best place for it to be located? It seems like a good place for it to be located to me but I am not an airplane mechanic or pilot. Wheels

Wheels In that type of aircraft, where you're putting your helmet right up to the display, I'd say it's a great place. This isn't a dogfighter, remember, and the pilot would never even get within visual range of his target, so flying head down is no problem.

Wheels I'm not being sarcastic. It reminds me of an earlier version of how the Mirage 2000's cockpit is set up. It drives me nuts in sims when the darn radarscope is waaaaaay down in the cockpit. Thanks UTR That picture is going into my archives. The first US astronauts and a Delta Dart. Those 2nd Generation jets looked like sci-fi spaceships too.

Great pic... Hey, the middle guy in orange is Ronald Reagan! I knew he flew WWII Fighters but I didn't know he also flew Cold War Interceptors.

I love the "unscripted" look of that picture. You know if it were done today the PR people would make sure that they all wore matching flight suits, boots etc.

Of course, they later tried to make the 106 a better "fighter" ie not a pure interceptor, but I'm not sure it really would've been any good at all with that cockpit.
