Latest rumor (none have gotten the release date correct, so far): On the market in January, top card (single GPU, probably) may have 3GB RAM, top card roughly $500. HD7000 Rumor The 3GB RAM makes sense because the top card is rumored to have over 2000 shaders. Could be nearly as fast as my CrossFired HD5870s and capable of driving 3 monitors easily (or not -- it is a rumor).

I think there were some images of the "mobile" HD7xxx part -- don't remember where I saw them (probably Fudzilla). Its also been rumored that the chips taped out, engineering samples were fabricated, and it worked -- months ago. The hold up has been that the manufacturing process has been poor -- did not produce a high yield of useful parts (or so the rumors have gone). Have read just over 2000 shaders, higher clocks, much faster memory rumors -- in top single GPU card. I'm planning to buy one -- assuming we don't have another Bulldozer episode. If supplies are "short", then I might have to jump at the first one I see on the first day. But, that's a couple months from now (if the rumor is correct). Right now, there is no new component I need. I'm playing the new games (like Skyrim) at max now

Maybe I should have waited... but it is too late. I gave in as the price drop I've been waiting for the past half year never came and ordered a GTX 560ti 2GB, and my friend ordered a Saphire HD 6950 2GB.
If I am correct, these are merely "refreshed" HD69**s correct?

By the rumours so far (and logic after previous models), there will be 7000 versions which are 'refreshes' of the 69x0 cards, but these will be some of the lower numbers. There will be new silicon for the higher end cards and these wafers are done on 28nm litography. You could expect the high end numbering to be: 7750 7770 7850 7870 7950 7970... and maybe a dual GPU 7990. I'll be waiting to see if some versions come with Rambus memory. I hope those will be overpriced with no performance benefit.

given the price of DDR ram, if RBR doesnt offer a significant performance to money increase. then I say stick with GDDR5

Latest rumor that I saw (a few days ago) was that Rambus memory will NOT be used in HD7xxx-- sticking with GDDR5 for the present (don't know what might happen later in 2012).
The HD79xx is supposed to be a NEW architecture shader (not merely a 28nm evolution of HD69xx). And, lots more shaders at a higher clock. One can daydream that the performance will be much better than HD69xx. But, so will the price (according to rumors). And, until we see them, who knows? As mentioned, December 5 should bring the first concrete news.
The GTX6xx high end really does seem to be greatly delayed past the original March time frame. So far, rumors say, the Nvidia parts are in trouble (whatever that means).

Are you implying a few articles worth of bandwidth is going to overwhelm your connect? Are you on 28.8 dialup??

The Jedi Master Forza 4 DLC, (At least 200-400 MB) (Bandwidth used to play online and test new cars) BF3 DLC, same as FM4, 3 Major Patches to Games (one Both 360/PC). (Total about 4 GB) (Gotta play online to see if new features and bugs fixed) Xbox 360 Major Update. (This might be a few KB for me, as I’ve already had the beta dashboard update, but some apps are still disabled.) (you also gotta figure in the bandwidth im gonna use testing new apps) New Build of Windows 8 Beta (The ISO last time barely fit on DVD9) New Albums on Zune Market Place (Last time they launched new albums (not new releases, but new albums added that weren’t there, I ended up downloading 15 GB worth). All that on top of my normal internet junkie routine.

From Fudzilla: "...According to what we know so far, AMD advises a ~500W PSU for the Radeon HD 7970 and that is 100W less than what Nvidia asks for the GTX 580 and somewhere around the GTX 560 Ti. This can be cosidered a great improvement if the rumoured performance turns out to be true..."

Does this also mean that it's better to wait until the 7XXX series come out and see what it does to current GPU prices?

Does this also mean that it's better to wait until the 7XXX series come out and see what it does to current GPU prices? I think so. One rumor was that AMD could have been selling HD79xx already in December. However, they would have taken a hit on HD69xx prices (Christmas presents). So, they decided to delay until January -- after selling all the HD69xx they could. So far, the price rumors on HD7970 are high prices (no competition from Nvidia). However, it has been noted that the rumors are just that -- rumors. AMD has not hinted at HD79xx prices yet. I continue to await the HD7970. Hopefully, I won't be turned off by the price tag But, those wanting an HD69xx are about to get a late Christmas present

I am strongly considering upgrading my HD 5770 to something "just behind the curve." I guess I'll wait until after the 7XXX series comes out then.

Site repeating a rumor today -- more succinctly. In the quote, the Tahiti XT is nominally the HD7970 single GPU card. "...the SI/GCN/HD7000 launch goes Tahiti XT, Tahiti Pro, Pitcairn XT, Pitcairn Pro, spaced about a month apart, starting in January. In that previous article we said prices are also about $500, $400, $300, and $200 respectively..."

The linked "leak" seems to corroborate rumors I've been reading. Exception is the 925MHz clock -- rumors were 1000MHz. Fudzilla, today, is expecting faster performance than GTX580. Minor Rumor Update If it can be upclocked to 1000MHz, it could be roughly as fast as my two HD5870 in Crossfire (without Crossfire/SLI limitations in some games) -- according to my guesswork. It will have to be that fast to make it an interesting purchase for me -- don't want to pay over $500 for a "slower system" (can't afford two at that price).

I just noticed this rumor at Fudzilla (claimed to be official from AMD): "AMD claims it is already shipping its first 28nm GPUs. We are not talking about mere samples, partners are getting the final product and they are expected to roll out the first cards in a few weeks..."

Press party Dec 22. Meanwhile the performance rumor is too good to be true The single-GPU HD7970 is said to perform like the dual-GPU HD6990 -- like my guesses indicated. I stole this whole-article quote from Fudzilla: "According to our sources, the Radeon HD 7970 is about 30 percent faster in 3DMark when compared to the Radeon HD 6970. These are early performance benchmarks made with the first "usable" driver.
According to the whispers that we are hearing right now, Radeon HD 7970 should end up about 30 percent faster than the HD 6970. These are 3DMark early performance numbers probably done with the 12.1 RC driver that was, at least according to our info, released two days ago. This should put the HD 7970 somewhere around Radeon HD 6990.
We are also hearing that the HD 7970 does even better in game benchmarks and we hope that we'll have more details regarding those pretty soon, as after all, game benchmarks are the ones that really matters when it comes to performance of graphics cards. We still don't know if there will be another driver before first reviews hit the net, but AMD usually holds the final driver as long as it can to control the performance leaks.
Some slides have leaked over at Donanimhaber showing that Tahiti might do a lot better when it comes to tesselation, but once again we are talking about AMD slides so we tend to tread lightly there.
In any case, we'll know for sure on 22nd of December."

Another lift from Fudzilla -- similar to one above -- but more recent and detailed. Rumor says that single-GPU HD7970 exceeds dual-gpu GTX590 in some cases. This all makes sense based on 28nm process and new architecture. Still have to see if its really true. "...When compared to the HD 6970, the HD 7970 is around 50 percent faster in 3DMark 11 Extreme test. It scores around 2800 points while the HD 6970 can get up to around 1800 points. The HD 6990 scores around 3400 points in the same test, but according to our sources, HD 7970 is more than happy with a good OC that draws the card an inch away from the HD 6990. The previously reported 30ish percent was probably taken from 3DMark 11 Entry setting test where all the cards are closer in performance.
We were also told about the 3DMark 11 Performance setting performance that ends up on par with the HD 6990 but we aren't sure if these are with or without OC.
These numbers also mean that [the HD 7970] ends up faster than the Nvidia GTX 590 in some cases. Of course, as always, take these numbers with a grain of salt..."

For completeness, the HD7770 will be the lowest numbered Radeon graphics card using the NEW architecture and 28nm process. LOWER numbered Radeons will be REBRANDS of the HD6xxx and HD5xxx series. So, for example, HD7650 is really HD6650 which is really HD5650. If Nvidia did that, I'd complain -- oh, they already do Anyhow, rebranding an old design is not a practice I agree with -- no matter who does it. HD7770 Picture and Rumor So, if interested in HD7xxx, get an HD7770 or better -- or you'll be buying last year's model under a new name. If the news keeps being good and the price is not astronomical, I may buy one of the first HD7970s on December 22 -- if I hit the "add to cart" button quickly enough Otherwise, I'll have to wait until January. Of course, I do NOT expect to "see" the difference ("measure" yes, "see" no) in any of my games (vs 2x HD5870) -- just an AMD/ATI fan being a fan.

The rest of the slides are online: http://www.abload.de/gallery.php?key=qpOM1lvzSadly no slides for single card Eyefinity, but there's crossfire vs SLI @ 7680X1600. [EDIT] Correction: No graphs on the slides, but there are numbers for 7680X1600 on a single card. They bode well for Eyefinity on displays one resolution notch lower. But then again... 12MPixel gaming?

Nice link. Good info for one seriously looking at a potential December 22 purchase (assuming some hit the market). Yes, Eyefinity does look very good on a single HD7970. CrossFireX scaling looks very good. My CrossFireX 2x HD5870 system (using an AMD CPU) would win some and lose some vs a single HD7970 (with an Intel CPU). Overall, HD7970 would be a small improvement -- but, maybe enough for an AMD fan Later on, maybe a second card in CrossFire (when they get cheap in a year or so)? Leaning hard -- but still have to make the final decision. Need to see some independent test results.

1x 7970 vs 2x 5870s,,
Pros: Eliminating XFire Compatibility/Handicap issues with titles that don't support it. Eliminating One Dual Slot card, and its power draw, and its heat from the system
Cons: Price?

Well, it beats the competition soundly in every department. New Eyefinity modes (in the new 12.2 driver). Supports 3DStereo with Eyefinity. Does powerful GPU compute. Uses relatively little power. Futureproof, as it looks ahead to Windows 8 and DX11.1. I can see that games are becoming slightly CPU limited at normal resolutions (e.g. Skyrim). Using this card at Very High resolutions seems to get the most out of it. Like Eyefinity 5760x1200 At that level, it seems comparable to my 2x HD5870 CrossFire. All in all, this card is what I hoped/guessed it would be, performance wise. It seems just worth it at $550 -- versus the original cost of my 2x HD5870 CrossFire cards (two for $410 on sale). It would be a slam-dunk at just over $400. Still, compared to GTX 580, its the better long term value. Now, we need some viable competition from Nvidia to bring the price down. That's a few months away they say.

sell off the 5870's to offset the cost.... and its a sure fire upgrade. Well, I will move my "excess" HD5870s down the line to other computers in my extended family. Thereby, bringing happiness to others Anyhow, its a good rationalization -- I'm buying it for the good of my family I did check retail sites starting at 5am this morning. But, I guess it won't be released until January 9. That's Okay. I have other things to do over the Christmas/New Year holiday period. My wife was hoping it would be delayed to January so she could first pay-off the credit card (she's a mathematician by training and Treasurer by avocation).

My wife was hoping it would be delayed to January so she could first pay-off the credit card HECK YEAH!? The best way to cut costs is to not have debts with interest on them. (I'll exclude a mortgage) Looks like you're lucky to have married a smart woman. Others will have to make do with an Excel credit card repayment calculator.

[Semi-OT] BTW, it looks like LG has the right monitor for 3D Eyefinity lined up: DM92, a 27" 3D IPS screen with a 1mm top/side bezel: LG Newsroom. 27" 1mm bezel on the leftThis is an image from their TV (LM8600), but should give you a better impression that that faked "3D" motorcycle PR shot in the news link.:
