I thought I had seen something on this issue before, but I wasn't having much luck with Search.

I am getting this strangeness along bodies of water; other areas seem OK:

This is on a brand-new computer with the following specs:

ASUS P8Z68-V LX motherboard; Intel Core i5 2500k @3.30Ghz; 8GB DDR3-1600 RAM; XFX Radeon HD6870; Dell ST2421L on HDMI at 1920x1080 75Hz; Seagate 500GB 16MB SATA-3 HDD; Windows 7 HP 64-bit; Xion 700W PSU.

For the install I copied my previously-working (UNmodded v4.10.1m) install from an XP machine into a Games folder outside of C:\Program Files. It runs beautifully with the exception of the water/shoreline graphics.

Any ideas how to fix this? I'm guessing driver issue ... but like I said it's brand-new outta the box with that new-computer smell. Driver version is last month's Catalyst 11.10, which works great otherwise (Steel Beasts is my only other sim for now).

Seems I remember you could drop an atioxx file from an earlier driver version into your IL2 folder to avoid a complete rollback? Anyone have a quick primer on howto? And does that still work on a Win7 64bit system?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Just to add ...

I said other areas seemed OK, but a little more playtesting on maps with no large bodies of water showed some flickering around forest edges.

By the way, here's the ogl section of my config file:

[Render_OpenGL]

TexMipFilter=3
TexCompress=0
TexFlags.UseDither=0
TexFlags.UseAlpha=0
TexFlags.UseIndex=0

TexFlags.TexCompressARBExt=0

TexFlags.TexEnvCombine4NV=0
TexFlags.TexEnvCombineDot3=1
TexFlags.DepthClampNV=0
TexFlags.SeparateSpecular=1
TexFlags.TextureShaderNV=0

HardwareShaders=1

TexLarge=1
TexLandQual=3
TexLandLarge=1

VideoSetupId=17
Water=2

Any ideas?

I think you're going to find your issues with the ATI Radeon card, unfortunately.

You can try these just to be sure (tri-linear mip map instead of anisotropic)

TexMipFilter=2
TexFlags.UseVertexArrays=1
TexFlags.TexAnisotropicExt=0

If that doesn't help, change also:

Water=0
ForceShaders1x=0

Which will alleviate the Shaders 2.0 in favor of Shaders 1

This is just to test, obviously.
If the problems go away, and you change them back and it still sucks, then... roll back your ATI driver to a MUCH older version.

Here is a link to an old atioglxx file:
http://www.mediafire.com/?ps0pwgs0ogcw1x2

Extract it into your Il-2 1946 main folder and see if it solves the problem.

Yes, I too have to use an older OpenGL file. The latest AMD drivers break Perfect Mode in IL-2.

In your Catalyst Controls turn Tessellation Off, Anti-aliasing mode to multi sample AA (all the way to the left) Smooth Vision HD settings to application controlled and see if that helps
