Here I am at my place of work. First to identify the place gets a cookie.

(Maybe we can make this into a little game? Guessing where others are, from a picture? - I'd like to see your pics too!)

Too easy, filename and building title give it away.

Great thread idea, though. And a great photograph!

It's funny how we come to think of other people here as personalities+handles, but not as walking around in nice suites.

Correct! That was fast...

Ok, Jaz or somebody else, dig out a photo from your computer and post it (good idea to change the name of the file, unless it is IMG8876...)!

It is very easy to upload a pic to a posting with SimHQ now. No need for a web host.

Hmmm, I'm going to have to scan in a bunch of pictures- one problem being, I was usually the one taking the shots. But here's one for starters (hopefully it's not too hard).

One of the beaches in Rio de Janeiro for sure, what with the Sugar Loaf in the background, but I cannot see from the angle which beach it is. Any experts want to add their take?

My guess would be Germany somewhere, probably the southern part, but I wouldn't have a clue where exactly. Maybe someone else has a better guess?

That's not the Colosseum! Despite the sneaky fake help writing "Ro(a)ming around Europe"... smile

I'm guessing some other Roman circus in Europe. Could it be Verona or maybe Pula in Croatia? Come on guys, we should be able to get this one with our common effort! smile

(I'll move on to the "Church in a cliff wall"-photo after we've sorted out Alicatts...)

Nope, not in Rome, but it is Roman smile and it has been in continious use since the Romans built it

Outside you can see it is not as big as the Coloseum

Hmm, it doesn't seem to be the Amfiteatro in Verona... - http://www.tarraconensis.com/verona/verona_romana.html

No brickwork in the upper part.

And the one in Pula has three rows of arches... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pula_Arena

Well, I'm stumped, but let's try some more, I mean, how many roman amphiteatres can there be!?

Well, had a look at this page of Roman amphiteatres, and now I'm pretty sure it is the one in NIMES, France!

http://www.touropia.com/roman-amphitheaters/

This page confirms it: http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-photo/alicia_abroad/1/1269211737/nimes-amphitheatre.jpg/tpod.html

- Same stone "railing" in the lower part of 4 of the upper arches...

This is the "Felsen-Kirche" in Idar-Oberstein, Germany, I think.

Hey Luke, that is totally impossible, you have to have at least a smidgen of a hint! - But from previous posts of yours I'd venture that it is in Iraq somewhere. Maybe up north in the Kurdish area?

Yes! - Went to Milan to study Italian a few years ago, and thought I'd learn A LOT by going to the Meazza, where both Inter Milan and AC Milan play smile - Saw some pretty big names there, Ronaldinho, Ibrahimovic, Beckham, etc, etc...

BTW, Never heard of the Felsen-kirche, looks really cool.

This is the "Felsen-Kirche" in Idar-Oberstein, Germany, I think.

As I don`t have cool pics I give my turn away to you more travelling guys.

Bingo! Contrary to what I was told before leaving the states, the Baumholder area was NOT the armpit of Germany as far as possible duty stations went.

Now back to the person whose turn I usurped LOL

I'm guessing it's stateside. Lake Arrowhead?

Nope, it was the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. But it IS confusing!

That building facade looks like some US military museum, maybe?

Alright, since Freycinet came close, I'll go ahead and give the answer:

Lake Dokan, Iraqi Kurdistan. I was there for three days on R & R. IIRC we were the first contingent to visit there. Nice place with a nice hotel:

Yeah, the water level in the pool was a bit low.

Carry on.

I don't think so, but I could be totally wrong. I need to do some research to see if I can find some more info on that.

Speaking of which, I did stay at one of Saddam's resorts outside Tikrit for about a month, and I got to see his infamous "Birthday Palace."

Chateau of Vaux-le-Vicomte.

"The Chateau of Vaux-le-Vicomte was built in 1658-61 for Nicholas Fouquet, the finance minister of Louis XIV. The architects were Louis LeVau and Jules Hardouin-Mansart; the gardens were designed by André LeNôtre. Fouquet was jailed shortly after the opening celebrations of the chateau, and Louis XIV afterwards employed the designers for his palace at Versailles."

Well done, Vaux le Vicomte indeed! - And yes, the king was so envious of it that he jailed the owner after being invited for the opening, and afterwards employed the architect and gardener to do Versailles... smile

It's a lovely town, we had many happy hours wandering round and then going out to visit some of the trenches in the area.
