I found a demo download of EAW from a reputable website and would like to get it to run on my old vintage 1999 computer for my 8 year old son. Figured it would be a nice introduction to flight sims for him.

However I still get the "insert game CD" message. Can the EAW demo be run as a, well, demo?

Maybe this is (the demo) to be burn on a CD ?
Can you provide the link where you catch this demo .. so some of us can test it and try to reproduce your problem and give you a solution

you could try going into the eaw.ini file and editing this section, so the last line reads like this one:

[Miscellaneous]
Debug Flags=0
Debug Path=./

that should send the exe back to the root directory for its cd check I think...
