The Office of the Chief of Naval Operations United States Navy 1947
The purpose of this review, which was prepared by officers on duty in the Operations Division, including Air Combat Intelligence officers with extensive service in the Pacific, is to analyze the relation between air and sea power. It is based upon the experience of naval aviation in the war against Japan as recorded in the files of the Navy Department. Reports of the United States Strategic Bombing: Survey have also been consulted and the chart of the progress o f the war has been taken from one of them.

These illustrations were created by Robert C. Osborn while he was commissioned as a Navy officer during WWII. Osborn began drawing cartoons of a pilot who was hapless, arrogant, ignorant and perpetually blundering in ways that put himself and his crew at unnecessary risk. The name of this character was “Dilbert the Pilot”, and “Dilbert” was soon to become a slang term used to refer to “sailor who is a foul-up or a screwball.” Scott Adams credits Osborn as an indirect source of inspiration for the main character in his own Dilbert cartoons.

By Maurice Baring
G. Bell and Sons 1920
One of the most unlikely midwives to the fledgling Royal Flying Corps was the literary, fashionable and unsoldierly figure of Maurice Baring. In 1914, aged 40, he obtained a commission in the Intelligence Corps, bought himself some khaki, got help with the tying of his puttees, and set off for France to be Private Secretary to the RFC's senior officer, a post held from 1915 by the redoubtable 'Boom' Trenchard. Flying Corps HQ, drawn from Baring's letters and diaries, describes the momentous and historic war years that forged the flying services, where Trenchard's resounding 'Make a note of that, Baring' became a well worn RFC expression. The embryo RAF was fortunate in Baring the staff officer, and also in having so witty and observant a writer to chronicle its early years.

By Evan John David
Charles Scribners Sons 1919
The object of this book is to explain the fundamental principles of aeronautics and to point out the historic development of both the heavier-than-air and the lighter-than-air craft. The treatment is simple. Technical phrases have been avoided wherever possible. Emphasis has been laid on the changes in the design or construction of aeroplanes and dirigibles, which show the evolution of flight and aircraft from early experiments with balloons and gliders to the transatlantic flights of the NC-4, the Vickers “Vimy” Bomber, and the R-34.

A documentary account of the allied invasion of Europe during World War II compiled from the footage shot by nearly 1400 cameramen. It opens as the assembled allied forces plan and train for the D-Day invasion at bases in Great Britain and covers all the major events of the war in Europe from the Normandy landings to the fall of Berlin. Introduced by then General Dwight D. Eisenhower and using footage filmed by military photographers, this documentary recounts the historic events from the D-Day invasion to the end of the war. The pre-invasion preparations focus on work in munitions and heavy equipment manufacturing. The D-Day invasion itself is explained in detail as is the unsuccessful Operation Market Garden, the failed northern thrust into Holland in the fall of 1944. This is followed by the Battle of the Ardennes in December/January and the eventual crossing of the Rhine and the march into Berlin.
