I am slowly making sense of RoF, but have a couple more questions:

(i) how does one change the default colour scheme so that all Albatros DV appear as, say, Jasta 11? I have the skin packs, and know how to apply markings to the player a/c.

(ii) there seem to be two different autopilots, which appear rather arbitrarily, one having a normal capital A as the symbol and the other a capital A with a heavier cross bar, a bit like a masonic symbol. What is the difference?

Any help will be gratefully received!

I'm not sure about the skins. If you play a beta career all the planes in your flight will have the correct skin. As far as I know in quick mission only your planes skin changes. All others in your flight are default. I could be wrong though.

The "A" autopilot is basically the AI taking over complete control of your plane. You will keep in formation, continue along the mission path and the AI will even engage and fight other planes. The "A" with the cross bar is just autopilot in level flight and you can still control the throttle.

Hello welcome to ROF.

1. If you mean in QMB, you click on the little wrench and you can choose the skin.

2. They are not arbitrary and each have a function. The A means Autopilot where the AI flies the plane and the A with a line is Level Autopilot. Both can be assigned in the Options menu. You are probably just hitting the A key on accident or something turning it on an off.

Thank you. I think I understand now - the level autopilot would be for, say a bomb run, and the "full" one for letting the game just get on and play itself while I sit back, watch and survive!

The level autopilot is ideal for bombing.

In, say, the HP O/400 or Gotha, you can set the level autopilot then hop into the nose-gunner's position to use the bombsight. Small changes in direction can be given to the pilot to line up for the bomb run (I can't remember the name of the commands, but I have them mapped to the left and right arrow keys on the keyboard).

Sorry . That sounded more rude than I intended. At the moment the A, shift+A and ctrl+A keys all seem to work sometimes, and not others. The sensitivity of the mouse is making editing of the input file very difficult.

Heya dhasdell,

Just some clarification on how some of this works in hopes it clears up any autopilot strangness you are percieving.

- SHIFT+A (Level-autopilot) is on by default at the beginning of a mission.
- CTRL+A (Autopilot) only works if it is enabled in the pilot-aids option screen.

- SHIFT+A can be used in any mission regardless of what the pilot-aids are set to. This is because it was implimented as one method of curing the "stick forward" complaint from some of 777's customers.

- CTRL+A takes over everything, just as you suspect and can generally be activated at any time.
- SHIFT+A will not engage no matter what - and will disengage itself if you are outside the flight envelope.

Perhaps these may be some of the reasons you percieve it as arbitrary.

Hope this helps.

In addition to that, you can also initiate turns with the Level Autopilot: Left Turn / Right Turn commands (provided you have Level Autopilot enabled). This is especially handy when lining up your aircraft for a bombing run.
