After your description of the MP, I'll keep an eye on it. If it's a fast paced fps, it's not my style, but for good MP structure it might be worth it.

I'm very interested, with Tribes Ascend and Planetside 2 I may never have to shoot a virtual M16 again. Now if id and Epic would just get going on Quake 5 Arena and Unreal Tournament 4 I could really be happy.

Well to be honest R/K I am not sure how this one will pan out. But from the very limitted info on it, it appears they are taking it down the same route as the old one.

So based on the old one, and trying to cover your concerns about twitch... well i think planetside excelled here (for its time of course)

If you wanted to be up close and personal assault infantry, then yes, twitch was a bonus. However cover was a large part of play as well.

For me, i wasn't big on the twitch thing when i started out in planetside so i initially chose the role of support. My character progression moved through the tech skills and i opted to train in support vehicles and technical skills.

So i ended up piloting most vehicles, being able to repair and hack. I enjoyed ferrying my clans to the hot spots and supporting them with evac and spawn points and repairs. This didn't necessarily mean i stood back from the action, to be honest i was often near the front lines setting up mobile spawn stations laying deployables for defense of our assets (towers and bases). Deployables consisted of sound sensors, mobile turrets, mines and boomers (c4 type explosives).

I really enjoyed flying the galaxy into battle, with fighter support to drop a whole contingent onto an enemy tower (i think they held 8 troops, 2 battlesuits and one vehicle. Then i would peal off to a secure location, repair up the bird from any damage and get ready to bring in more troops or get ready for extract.

Progression from there, well i quickly learned that being a cloaker was very challenging and suited my game play very well. A cloaker (pretty self explanatory) has a very light armoured suit which offers little ballistic protection but can cloak you. YOur suit had a very limited capability of holding things, and you were limited to only a pistol and only a few more items. I found that this worked well in my support role as i became covertly offensive.

Downside to this is that your character could get up to two implants which gives various bonuses and abilities. One implant was definitely a response to cloakers called darklight. This implant could spot cloakers but had limited range. So i had to be very careful.

As i had played for a while i reskilled for selected supprt vehicles, skills and cloaking ability. I left the big guns skills out of the equations. And my style of game play evolved. While being besieged, i enjoyed the following tactics, Cloaking and sneaking out into enemy lines. I liked the snipers as they were stationary and if they were relatively alone i would sneak up lay a c4 charge at their feet and let rip. I only had a pistol so once i started firing it took a 4 shots to kill medium armour, or more shots for the heavy armour. So laying c4 was the longer but safer option. However, laying the deplyables had a visual shimmer as they morphed. So the astutely aware prey could spot you deploying and catch you in the act. Was some definite nail biting moments.

Also running behind enemy lines i would lay deployable turrets that caused all manor of mayhem. Enemies dug in and suddenly a turret deplys next to them creating havoc. Ohh they knew there was a cloaker about then, and the hunt was on!

In my clan at the time my cloaker and support skills moved up a gear to major infiltration and i became the key element to the start of a fresh battle, and this is how it played out.

I would drop or fly in to an enemy location well behind enemy lines (that took some doing sometimes) and landed some distance away. As the base was well behind enemy lines, we could be assured that there would be little enemy presence their as most of them are point whoring at the front (though some would be back there getting vehicles, setting up supplies or just lounging about).

Sneaking in had to be a cautions afair. As enemy techs usually left deployables (turrets and mines and sensors) everywhere. I would have to go in, clear mines whilst trying to avoid detection as i made my way to the vehicle bay. Now, i had two objectives,

Phase 1) if the base was relatively empty, i would hack the enemy vehicle bay (so i could get items out of it) and i would race a spawn truck (which also resuplies troops and could cloak when staionary) and race it out of the base as the turrets would be firing at me and take it outside of enemy detection close to base and deploy. This had repurcussions, if i hacked the terminal it would remain hacked for a period of time. Any enemy wishing to use the terminal would instantly know it was hacked and know an infiltrator was about and the hunt was on. Otherwise the astute would notice on their map that the base defenses were going off and a vehicle was about and the hunt was on.... But if timed right, they had no idea and my team now had a spawn point hidden and located close to the base from which we and our side could launch our attack. But we had to remain undected. Any battle detected could lead to a massive influx of enemy troops into this base and our efforts would have been for nothing.

If i thought i could not safely hack the terminal and escape without arising suspicion the i went straight to phase 2

Phasse 2) Was to enter the base and under the noses of many enemy, i would cloak past them to an equipment terminal. Hacking this (hacking made an audible and visual presence and took time so was risky business) terminal gave me access to unlimited equipment and i would loot up on deployables to use as c4 and moved into the generator room. Here is the labourious process and most dangerous part as it was time consuming. I could not hold enough C4 to take down the generator so it took 2 trips to the terminal and back. Not only that, i had to hack a locker to store all my detonators in and extra boomers for phase the spawn tubes if needed.

But once i had (IIRC 6 charges needed) all charges in place i advised my clan i was set. They were now set as assualt either by air drop or by my deployed vehicle outside of the base. I would set all the charges off, (i could only do it one by one so anyone near would hear and come straight for me.) Once the generator was down, it gave us a level playing field.

1) Enemy spawn tubes in base were inop
2) Vehicle bays were inop
3) Base defenses were inop (deployables were still active)

My clans assault team would rush in as soon as possible, knowing that the enemy are now alerted and would come rushing en-mass to this base. The assualt was split into 2 prongs. 1 team rush to the gen room to help hold off any enemy presence that will attempt to repair gen. The ohter team would rush straight to the C&C room where they would try to hold off any intruders whilst we hacked the base to take it under our control.

Supplimentary actions, if base hack is going well, i would get ready to repair gen to bring online when base was ours so we would have benefit of vehicles and base defenses. If base hack did not go well, team 2 pulled back to spawn room to take out the spawn tubes that would become active and spew forth enemy if power were restored, From there, they pulled back to gen room in a last ditch suicide effort to keep base offline as long as possible as this would draw forces away from front line. We often held the gen room for periods of intense fighting and was a blast before we succumbed.

If base was won, our side could flood into the base via sanctuary and here a full scale war would ensue.

So the game catered for twitch, for stealth, for support and for various vehicles and co-operative play. I really enjoyed it and these were just some of many different enjoyable scenarios that we had.

The original Planetside had some of my all time favourite online gaming moments..from hot dropping an assault team onto the roof of an enemy tower to large scale bridge battles featuring main battle tanks, light armoured vehicles, assault aircraft and hundreds of infantry... This game its top of my wish list for 2012... I can't wait.

lol.. already been there and done that.. also following all appropriate figures on twitter and subscribed to the facebook pages as well.. you could say that i am excited by this one.. you would be right wink

It seems a shame to me that there has been a relatively lackluster response to it here on SHQ however it is an MMO and fantasy/sci fi so i guess i understand that. However i reckon it's right up some of the SHQ regulars street given its need for total teamplay and cooperation..

Yeah totally agree. Like you said. Some of best gaming moments have been with planetside one. And looks like planetside 2 will be quite similar...

But sounds like they have gotten rid of A.N.T. runs... that is a shame, really enjoyed those.

Definitely looking forward to this one. PS was an awesome game in its prime, I hope they can recapture it in PS2.

For those that are not following. Planetside 2 is going to be Free to play. (thats worth a look in anyones book)

Quote:
Q...PlanetSide 2 will be free to play, but in what ways will you be looking to monetize the game at launch? How mindful are you of nailing the balance between free play and paid items?

A...Well, one thing we’re committed to is ensuring that players who pay and those who don’t are on an even playing field, so that PlanetSide2 doesn’t become a “Pay-to-Win” experience.

Items that affect your PvP gameplay will always be acquirable through gameplay, the types of things that will be sold for our virtual currency StationCash would be cosmetic changes, convenience items, and the like.
