Did some Googles. Apparetly it will work if you connect the 4 to an 8, but you're doubling the volts, and crazy stuff like a PCI slot not working while the next one beside it does? Hmm maybe I'll look for an adapter at RS tomorrow near work.

Thanks!

It doesn't go there. Newer motherboards have the 2x12 "main" and a secondary 2x2. There should be a connection for it. http://www.productwiki.com/upload/images/asus_p45_series.jpg

I think this is your motherboard, you'll see above the CPU socket the 2x2 spot.

Here's the manual: http://static.highspeedbackbone.net/pdf/e4144_p5q-e_series.pdf

Can you take picture of your entire motherboard, please?

Ahhh, thanks! That's VERY close, mines a P5Q-E, not a 3 though.. In that pic at the top left there's a 2x4 that's half plugged. The open 2x2 part is where the 2x2 connector on the PSU fit when I tried it.

I'm gonna put things together now and try it.. There's no ram, so it won't POST, and I still need a video card, but this is interesting. For a minute there I thought I was gonna have to spend a cent on this ultimate budget rig.. Phew! wink

PS the wife had the bright idea today to say "Well, if the DDR2 for that board is more expensive than current DDR3, would it cost much more to just build something current?" I married the right girl!

Hehe! So, just so we're clear (since I would still like to build this rig in the meantime), the 2x2 I have, even though it will fit in the 2x4 on my 'new' board, isn't required since it's meant for newer computers?

That 2x2 on the PSU looks to be a PCIe connector for a graphics card.

Can you snap a photo of your entire motherboard and PSU connectors?

Sure (and thanks for taking the time to help by the way!):

Since I lack even basic reading skills when I get excited about stuff I forgot to include the cables.. Shot with my phone after I switched back to the telephoto lens on my cam.. I hate switching lenses, it's Russian Roulette I say!

Does the power supply have the 8 pin (4x2) secondary connector?
