Movie in which most of humanity seem to live in giant space stations around Earth, and a few remote locations far away. Everyone wants to go to Rhea, the "new Earth", where a clean simple life awaits, as long as you have enough money. A young doctor decides to raise that money by going on a long-haul freighter run to an unmanned station that will soon be a connecting hub and location for planetary exploration.
I just finished watching this Swiss movie, and I thought it was quite good. Don't expect Avatar, it was made with a more reasonable budget, but it looks good. Keep expectations within reason, and you will enjoy it more than watching your favorites again for the 98th time. It is in German, so subtitles would be in order. Basically, instead of watching a BS Syfy movie of the week, watch this one instead!
Cargo was released in 2009.

It's been on my netflix queue, but no idea how long. Still no release date there. Sounds really good.

Hmmm..seems interesting enough. Since you liked it Rick, I'm assuming that the film didn't have a preachy eco message to it?

Hmmm..seems interesting enough. Since you liked it Rick, I'm assuming that the film didn't have a preachy eco message to it? Not really no. I mean it starts off with talk of Earth being uninhabitable, I THINK there was mention biowarfare. Then they also deal with a terrorist group responsible for some attacks. But that's not really the focus of the movie, and is quickly forgotten: the station most live on we don't get to see much before we leave, but it seems like a somewhat bland and prosperity is perhaps hard to come by, thus the main character decides to do the shipping run, 4 years there, 4 years back. But no, it doesn't have that "humans are evil" type of message seen in certain recent movies. BTW: when I first heard of this movie, I wondered if it was similar to Pandorum, the horror movie of a couple years ago...that I've not seen. Is Pandorum any good? Only about scary thrills, or is there a real story to it too?

For those who have seen it: Why did they decide to destroy the antenna? It seemed so cruel to me...I mean, if you are stuck in a box and logged into the internet virtual world...I'd really rather not be UNPLUGGED from it! Know what I mean?

For those who have seen it: SPOILER!! I think they only cut comunicaton in/from Rhea..not unplugged anyone. It´s just a way to prove for people in earth, that´s they telling the truth about Rhea.

For those who have seen it: SPOILER!! I think they only cut comunicaton in/from Rhea..not unplugged anyone. It´s just a way to prove for people in earth, that´s they telling the truth about Rhea. I agree...but... Thinking about it when they were there, about to blow it up, I thought "huh...great, so now they will be out of contact with friends and family for 8 solid years, just because these two twits wanted to prove it was virtual?!?".
After considering the need to "prove the point", it's a horribly cruel thing to do to hundreds of thousands of people, "virtual world" or not. Even judges can't prevent serial killer inmates from being visited by family members...but these two "hero" twits are going to decide that for ALL those people.
If they'd had time, and tech knowledge, they could have instead just put a shutdown timer on the array, say have it block all traffic for a month. But that wouldn't prove the people weren't on the planet living lives, just that the array was broken/destroyed, just as blowing it up wouldn't actually prove that either: a radio broadcast is a radio broadcast, and if it breaks, just means the comms is down, not that the world is virtual or not!
The home reaction won't be "oh noes! they live in a virtual world!", but instead "when are the pr1cks gonna fix the antenna so I can chat with my niece again?!?".
Otherwise a good movie though! And that shortsightedness demonstrates that even heroes aren't perfect...maybe writers too, but maybe it was intentional? Perhaps they feel regret on the ride home?!

Think you are right on the money there! I kept thinking Alien all the way through the film but without the shock/horror. There were a few continuity errors through it as well eg. Laura's Desert Eagle became a Browning HP at one point. While I enjoyed it I'm also glad it was only Ł6 for the Bluray. film and sound quality was good, a sort of Blade Runner meets Alien in parts and the picture aspect of 2.35:1 meant I could fill my screen.

Watched Cargo, liked it. Acting was better than expected. Had "0" expectations when I watched Pandorum, therefore I was able to get into and enjoyed it. If you set expectations for it, probably would be a fail.
However I do tend to go easy on Sci-Fi because the pickings are so slim.
I rank Cargo with Moon, Pandorum with Sunshine.

Well thanks for the heads up. I have just watched pandorum and without any knowledge of the film thought the start of it was a good premise. Though it ended up as a typical ..(spoiler).. It was entertaining.
So i have cargo on order and hopefully i will enjoy that one as well.
Thanks for the tip :-)

well i finally got to watch cargo (having trouble with Lovefilm recently), and i was impressed with it. I like the feel they gave of deep / long sapce travel and it kept the theme without going "star trek" or space horror as with other movies.
I enjoyed this more than pandorum.
Thanks again for the heads up. Good movies and good watching.
