This is purely a fan question, but critique-based comments are also welcome! I am just curious as to how many folks were taken by this movie like I was. Simply put . . . did you love it?

Where did this movie fit in the appreciation spectrum for you: Hate - like - love - don't care?

I am asking because for reasons I cannot explain, this movie had an impact on me and I wonder who else felt the same. Thanks for your input. smile

I think I watched it too young, don't remember much apart from a mountain made of mashed potato.

It's a sci-fi film full of optimism so when I first saw it as a kid I absolutely loved it. I still love the movie but as an adult I see it from a different perspective. In addition to the optimism, I also see an innocence and naivete but those are strengths and not weaknesses of the film.

Please put into the like+++ category for CE3K.

I am not a big fan of Spielberg's works but I do like this film alot for having a premise of benign/friendly alien encounter compared to many hollywood films with the aliens as enemies.

DId you get the BR collector edition? If not it is worth it for having the multiple releases of CE3K (wish Lucas had taken note of this and the Blade runner release).

Francois Truffaut is too cool as a director and as an actor in this film.

My parents took me to see it at the drive-in. It had a big impact on me. It has humor, scifi and drama all in one. But sadly I think sense the early 1990's its fading a little as a classic. But for those of use that were 10 years old or older and remember the 70's it will live on.

Didja know it was a book, too? Written by Mr. Spielberg himself? It's a great read. Follows the movie very faithfully, although I'm not entirely certain which came first, or if they were parallel projects.

I saw it back in the 70's myself and have loved it ever since. It was a tremendous achievement in filmmaking and stands out even today as an amazing piece of sci-fi cinematography. As far as I'm concerned, it is a timeless classic that should live on forever.

Huh, I had no idea Spielberg wrote one. I didn't think he was much of a writer since the vast majority of his movies had screenplays written by other people.

I'll bet it was actually ghost written, like SW was even though it says Lucas was the author.

I bought the 25th anniversary collector's edition DVD and the 30th anniversary BD set. I am a fan. biggrin

I also bought the original soundtrack and the 25th anniversary soundtrack that was extended. I'm a fan of that too!

I think I'll make an exception to my new "never buy another disk" rule and get this on BR. The reason for the rule is that I'm tired of re-buying movies whenever new formats emerge. With CE3K I am pretty sure I will get my money's worth from several viewings because I still love the movie.

By the way, part of the magic attraction for me is because I remember seeing the movie trailers on TV when it was released and wanted to see it so badly but my parents were not at all into going to the movies (and taking the kids). So I missed out on movies like Star Wars and Close Encounters. When I finally got to see Close Encounters it was on VHS at my next door neighbor's house in 1982. Even on a crappy little color TV it managed to totally pull me in.

The cool thing is comparing the 3 cuts of the film. I think I like the final one the most, but the other 2 have their charms.

It's been a while since I've seen all three versions so I'm a bit fuzzy on which version has what. I know the original theatrical release showed the inside of the mothership at the end but it didn't have the desert scene with the large cargo ship.

No. Neither of those scenes were in the original, both are in the special edition (being filmed for it), only the desert scene is in the final cut (as Spielberg hated showing the inside, it was done at Columbia's insistence when it said he could have money to film the other missing scenes like the desert one).

I like reading about the details surrounding Francois Truffaut's involvement in this movie. Apparently he was concerned about his heavy French accent getting in the way. I grew up hearing alot of French relatives speak, so I can usually spot a real French accent vs a faked one. I was instantly sold on this French character from the moment he said, "Sunburn?" At least I think that was his first line.

Me too. I can't think of any other reason to visit Wyoming.
