With versions of Windows prior to Windows 7, I could create folders for my icons and just drop them in the Start menu to keep my desktop uncluttered. They’d open up like context menus but with Windows 7 they’ve removed that feature for some reason(?).

Anyway, I was using Stardock Objectdock to keep all my crap organized until today when it lost it’s marbles. That’s fine by me though ... I found a really nice free utility called Stardock Fences! ...

I really like how you can double click the screen and all the icons disappear. You can select certain “fences” to remain visible when you do this though which I find really cool.

Using this along with customised toolbars in the taskbar keeps things really clean.

I love great freeware!!!

Grab it here ... http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/downloads.asp (the free version works fine for me and you can take "snapshot" backups with it as well it seems)

I can't personally vouch for this software, but I did see it on a newsgroup a while back.

I've used fences before and it is a nice freeware clutter remover or hider more precisely.

Toolbars are still there...

Move Icons Into a Folder, Right Click taskbar, goto Tool Bars, Ne Toolbar, Browse For folder. and hit OK.

Yup, my toolbars are pretty much full smile (I thought I mentioned that I used toolbars in my original post?) Anyway, just wish I had the old way of creating folders in my Start menu.

I've used Fences for a while. Nice piece of software to organize all those desktop icons, and if you want a clean desktop, just double-click some empty space to hide everything!

Good tip Skate! Right click the Start button, hit properties, select the Start Menu tab, select Customize and change whatever menu you want to "Display as Menu".

The thing is that I used to be able to add my own menus on the fly and not be restricted to Computer, Control Panel, Documents etc etc.

I'm still really liking Fences. I can't even see a process running for it!

thats the idea behind these programs, to make it easier to do those things.

setting up custom menus is a chore in Windows.

I've been using it for awhile and I really like it. The only downside I've found is that it occasionally "forgets" where the icons go and you have to reset them. The program does have a backup function, which I now use regularly if I add or remove shortcuts.
