I wonder how many people will know what movie is being referenced by the title of this thread.

For those that haven't seen Flex's Dev blog update, he posted this:

"For those interested Dave escaped the Thailand floodwater and got a message through to say both himself and his cats are fine." ahoy

I'm not officially a doctor but i am officially alive. When i left the city it was as a precaution now it seems my house has finallly flooded and it could take weeks for the water to receede. I was one of the lucky ones as i could afford to get out and stay out. There are millions of people now living in filthy black water with no access to drinkingwater and dwindling food supplies.

Cheers

Hi Dave,

Glad to see you back online.

As a fellow cat lover (had 22 at one point) I have to ask, how did the cats take to all that water and then being moved ?

Very happy to see that they're safe ..... Oh, and you too!

Cheers,

Andy

Hi Andy,

I chose to skip town before the floods got to my house as the roads are the first to flood when the water hits a district. The cats enjoyed the drive and spent most of their time looking out the windows.

22 cats is madness. Did they live inside or out?

Cheers

Hi AD,

They were all feral cats (+ my own 2 in the house). Somebody had dumped a box of kittens in the park behind my house. They survived and started breeding. Most of us in the village put food out for them. Eventually the Cat Action Trust helped us to trap them and they had them neutered on the understanding that we would feed them until the died of natural causes. I made small log cabins for them and they used my greenhouse during the winter. When the last one died he was 15 years old (unheard of for a feral).

Jaeger:
Some of us prefer to "focus on the feline" because cats are far more honest in their feelings than most humans. BTW my enquiry was no slight on Dave and I knew, as a fellow cat lover, he would know this.

Hi Andy,

I completely get where you're coming from. I feel the same that's why I generaly keep my own counsel.
No offence was intended.

Sorry guys, I disagree.

Dogs, by their heritage, are pack animals. The only way a pack can survive is for one animal to be dominant and all the rest subserviant to that one. Domestic dogs see their family as their pack and the most dominant person in the family as their leader. The dog can't help but be loyal to that person and, by extension, the rest of the pack.

Cats have always been loners (the only exceptions being prides of lions). They are independant and centred on self. If a cat does something you can guarantee it's because IT wants to do it. So, if a cat gives you it's loyalty and affection, it's because it wants to.

Don't get me wrong, I love dogs (especially german Shepherds) as much as cats. I just prefer cats.

Cheers,

Andy

Well I disagree. If a cat gives you it's "loyalty and affection" it's only because it wants something in return (usually food) so a cat in IMO is somehow a "hypocritical" animal in the sense that it doesn't never have a real sense of loyalty and affection towards their human owner (due to like you said to their "loner nature").
Dogs are like you said a "pack animal" and therefore social animals that's why IMO their "loyalty and affection" is usually a true one. But don't be fooled regarding the dogs capability to survive alone, dogs (at least some races) are more than capable or surviving alone it's just that they prefer to live when possible in a "society" (the pack).

Anyway my favourite animal was a Parakeet that I had (sadly already died) which had drinks with me (whiskey, wine, etc...) with the exact same pleasure as a human being and replied (nodded) a YES when I offered something that it wanted and nodded a NO when I offered something that it didn't want, I would like to see a cat or even a dog doing that! wink

Trust me, my dog knows the difference between the words "dog food" and "pizza". There may not be speech involved, but there is definitely a distinct reaction when I say one or the other. She also knows what "vet" means, as well as many other words.

This thread has taken a rather unusual turn hasn't it? lol runningdog
