Hehe, it is certainly fortunate that most ATGMs have impact fuses only. Although it can happen even with a proximity-fused AAM:




I fired this R-73 just outside minimum range, but apparently closure was such that the fuse did not arm in time (old Flanker 2.51 screenshot).

In defense of my ATGM brothers: Winding and grinding six kilometers of heavy duty guidance wire into your rotor would have messed you up.

The TOW also doesn't leave a smoke trail whatsoever. The rear rocket is only there to get it out of the tube and more like the charge of a cannon (and sounds like it too), after that, the 'diagonally' facing rockets in the mid-section fire for another three seconds or so (I forget the exact numbers, it's been too long), then it's a glider for the rest of the ride.
