Hi. First of all, this is a wonderful forum. Ive spent a few days browsing this one and BoBII. I have purchased a new PC for the purposes of getting into flight sims. Not a super powered one but certainly it makes the recommended specs for CoD. Therefore I should be able to run it well on medium specs ? I have lots of questions but I know by searching I should find the answers here somewhere. However for starters..... should I purchase CoD from steam or should I buy a retail version ie which is easier for patching, taking into concideration im not as clever with technology as i should be Thank you for any help. Stevie

No matter which version you buy (online or retail store disk), it will end up running through Steam. Also, unless you feel like trying out beta patches (which get installed manually), all of your official final version patches will get installed through Steam. By default, updates are done automatically or you can unclick this option and have Steam update only when you tell it to.
The issue is not p*ssy. The issue is monkey.

Welcome to Sim hq. First of all post your specs so we have an idea of your system, people with similar specs will be able to advise about graphics settings. The only advantage of the boxed version(which I have) is if you need to do a complete reinstall at any point, having the dvd is a lot quicker than having to download the whole thing through Steam.

Welcome to Sim Hq,it is a great forum. As for CloD give it six months then it will work. Dont get me wrong,it looks lovely but there it ends. Get yourself into the original and read the thread on how to update it,you cant go wrong m8.
Cheese That opinion is quite outdated! Cod already works adequately now and gets better with every patch. CoD is already much, much more then only good looking!

Hey there, your CPU specs and RAM are ok for CloD, the weak point in your system is probably your GFX card, 3GB of Vram is great if it's DDR5, but from what I've read your card comes in DDR3 flavours as well which is not so great. This game chews graphics memory up like nobodies business, I checked today and it was using just under 1.6GB on my setup, 2Gb ram would be my recommendation but DDR5 not DDR3. I would buy a 460 1gb at the very least, a 560ti 2GB if I was buying a single card solution today, (i'm not though) and a 580 if money was no object. Who knows though, maybe it'll be OK, there seem to be many reports of people running CloD with top end rigs who can't put up with poor performance, and on the other hand people with mid range rigs who are perfectly happy, I used to run it with a quad core phenom and a single 460 quite happily(mid settings mostly). Nothing about this game seems to make much sense, it's great but its madder than a sack of hot cats.

Hi Stevie, just adding my voice to the mix. Your system is a good one and should run CoD quite well with most features set to "high" or "medium".
As you can see, opinions vary as do expectations; and all have merit with that in mind. Many features in CoD are missing or broken (proper radio Comms, dynamic weather, etc) , plus a lot of work remains in optimising the code for increased frame rates, flight and damage modelling tweaks, Artificial Intelligence tweaks, etc. ad nauseum.
That said, the cockpit layouts are breathtaking, the aircraft themselves are gorgeous, the landscape and ground object details are amazing, and the English Channel looks COLD!!!!! For simply strapping on a Spitfire or ME 109, flipping a few switches, adjusting a few levers, firing it up and hear your Merlin/Daimler Benz 601 wheezing & coughing then roaring into life with flames and smoke reaching past you on either side.......
The Quick Missions and Single Missions are excellent to get the feel of the aircraft. You can gradually increase the Realism settings as you gain more acumen for an increasing challenge. The online multiplayer aspect is hitting new strides with this latest update. Coupled with Teamspeak3 (a free Internet gaming communication utility - easy to install and use) you'll find yourself hooking up with other members to provide escort for still other members to bomb an enemy airfield. Or simply pop in for 20 minutes to take off from an airfield under attack and attempt to lift off between strafing runs to drive the intruders off and enable fellow pilots the chance to do likewise. Or just cruise around at 10,000 feet enjoying the scenery.
Keep us posted on your progress - we'll be happy to help you get set up!
And welcome to SimHQ!

Rise of Flight. I would welcome any pointers or opinions on these also.
Give ROF a go its a really great sim, the basic package with 2 planes is free to play now. By coincidence 777 have an aircraft sale on this week.

Welcome here! I'm pretty sure that your system will run CoD fine at medium-high settings like others here said. On my i7 2600k and GTX580 it's smooth as silk at high/very high settings everywhere but in the clouds (around 70 fps in average). But you really need three games now that you are going into flight sims * You need Cliffs of Dover that is the best WW2 sim even though it was really after the patch last week that it got to the level it should have had in version 1.0 (or 0.9 ;)) * Then download Rise of Flight and try if for some nice WWI kites... * And then DCS-A10 for some modern action... And if you don't have good old IL2 you need to pick that up from some bargain bin at $10 or something (the complete 1946 version)

Well, I’ve been on and off the COD bandwagon since purchasing on day 1. Personally, I’m not in the “IM NOT TOUCHING THAT WITH A BARGEPOLE” crowd, and can see the sim getting better with each patch. Remember when IL2 came out? Or LOMAC? Or ROF? Or Falcon4? It’s a long road, but to wait till it’s perfect would be foolish IMO. I’ve been with DCS:A-10 since beta and have enjoyed the ride and with each successive patch have new toys to play with. I am downloading the free ROF trial as we speak and along with BMS 4 now have a full hanger of flight Sims to fulfil my varied itches

Cheese That opinion is quite outdated! Cod already works adequately now and gets better with every patch. CoD is already much, much more then only good looking! Or you could choose to become part of the progression of Cliffs of Dover as it improves. Your choice.
