Is there any way to force the resolution on this game?

I'd like to run it at 1920x1080 with a 16:9 aspect ratio instead of blocky old 1400x1050 which is the max the setup utility offers.

Does anyone know where the game stores the resolution settings that you input through the setup utility?

Thanks!

Cheers!

There is a way Sauron, I don't remember exactly what you have to do but I remember it's a registery hack. I remember doing it (1920x1080) awhile back but it didn't work well for me since it really just stretched the screen and most of the in game icons were not viewable at that resolution. I know the post on how to do it is here in the SimHQ forums somewhere, but since they did away with B-17 II TM8th subforum I have no ideal where that post ended up, but doing a search in this subforum would probably be a good place to start. Also I do remember you had to start the game with the B-17 exe, if you use your desktop shortcut it will reset the resolution back to the default.
cheers

I don't know if you know this Godzilla but next to the thread title for each post is a link for that post. If you copy that link it will take the person directly to that post so the person doesn't need to go through the whole thread to find it.

They normally look like this picture but there are other icons that can be used.

Thank you Godzilla1985!

That works like a charm in Windows 7 64-bit. But one note, if you're using Windows 7, you need to add the step in red below to the registry address. Otherwise, just the same.

  1. Open your Registry Editor
  2. Navigate to:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microprose\B17\General
  3. Double-Click on the "DisplayMode" entry in the right-hand window
  4. Change it to something like:
    • 1920x1080 32bpp 60Hz
  5. Click OK, and then close your Registry Editor

As mentioned above, the only caveat is the fact that the game has a lot of issues when rendering the top & bottom portions of the screen when the display ratio isn't 4:3 (Widescreens are usually 16:10 or 16:9). This means that when you are in-game you can't mouse up to the top or bottom of the screen to move around the compartments/crew at all. You can of course still use the keyboard shortcuts to do this.

I haven't found a workaround - mainly because I'm pretty sure the only way to completely resolve the issue is to hex-edit the game code. My 24" 1920 x 1080 LCD doesn't scale 1600 x 1200 very well so I'm sort-of still in the process of finding the 'sweet spot'.

Now if anyone figures out how to scale the data box back fully into view...

BTW, the "black sky" issue caused by antialiasing can be cured by changing your type of antialiasing from "multisample" to "supersample" and you'll be running in widescreen with beautiful AA. The game never looked better.

Cheers!

If someone who knows more than I know does feel like fiddling around with a hex edit to pull everything back on screen at widescreen resolutions, I can tell you that "Start.exe" contains the following entry:

SetAspectRatio@SvDisplayModeSelection@@QAEXNN@Z....?

That seems like the right direction, but what to do about it from there is beyond me. Someone more knowledgeable would have to take the ball and run with it from there.

Cheers!
