Lots of work put into Monaco, but I wonder how many tracks we're getting.

Wow! For a few minutes there I was transported back to when I was watching John Frankenheimer's Grand Prix with James Garner. What a great trailer this was! I cant wait for this to be released.

Very nice trailer, the animated trackside people are a nice touch, too....can't wait for the pre-orders to start. I don't pre-order much or anything, but ISI's earned it as far as I'm concerned.

Start chanting now Beta...Beta...Beta !
Love the F1 60's cars, but 50's and 70's as well. A certain someone said they loved Spa, but something else as well, now i'm wondering If this is what he meant. I was watching the slides, or should we call them drifts now. I just wanted to hear the engines, although I must admit I really liked the music as well !
I would love to be a beta tester for this, but I'm sure they have more than enough already. I wonder what the open wheel trainers will be like?

The ISR guys mentioned "licensed content" and the 50/60/70's cars....wondering just what all they licensed, car wise. The winged red/gold car might have been portraying a Colin Chapman Lotus with the Gold Leaf livery, but never got a good enough look to tell for sure. I did see a Cosworth for sure, though.

They picked the wrong name . . . they should have called it 'S-Factor' . . . as in Holy!

They couldn't have picked a better motif to showcase it . . . love classic F1 since GPL days!

I wonder if SMS' C.A.R.S. project launched and sucking simracers money into it while in development set a little fire under ISI's bottom, commercial wise. They send a message: "do not spend all your sim budget yet, see what we are cooking for you" :-)

Can't tell that much from a trailer, gameplay is always better, but it sure is a step up. Glad to see them lead off with some classic racing.
I doubt CARS has anything to do with it, this has been long enough in coming. Anyone should have room to try 2 different sims, especially with so few "modern" efforts coming out.

Some more fine words from Tim's Blog... boing

"Grand Prix racing in the 1960's was a mixture of bravery that bordered on recklessness and, contrary to what many may say, innovative design and technology, far from primitive, which led Formula One to where it is today.

It was an era when the human eye, instead of a computer and a wind tunnel, designed a beautiful car. It was an era where spectators and drivers were only protected by bales of hay, which were often more likely to attribute to a fire than to save you in an impact.

Risks were taken and lives were lost, but the romance of the era still remains been the target of software developers, TV documentaries, and Hollywood movies. Many, including those of us at ISI, consider this space in time to be a golden age in the history of motorsport.

The racing game/sim community (console, or PC), mention certain content in their forums, twitters and blogs, they get excited about particular turns like Eau Rouge, the Corkscrew, etc. This often means they receive a cookie-cutter set of tracks from every racing game because – that’s what they ‘asked’ for.

Even when a developer does take a big risk and do something different, there are sometimes decisions made to incorporate those important turns. For example, an inclusion of the modern and recognizable Eau Rouge, incorrect for the period, into the 1998 PC title, Grand Prix Legends.

While we understand that our open modding nature allows it to negate some of that risk, it is important to realize that racing games often give difference in content, and often there is little to no risk for the developer in terms of content appreciation from the customer. Until, that is, they get bored of the same tracks all the time…

The first in-game/sim screenshot of rFactor 2 released to the public was of a road lined with trees, a house on the right and a truck parked in its driveway. This, barely recognizable to us as the same track now, was the first indication that ISI were trying to do something different.

We have licensed content from the modern era of motorsport for multiple types of racing, but also have licensing deals for real content from the first four decades of Formula One (some in the initial release, some to come later). We’ve done this because this is what we love and this is what we want to bring to the racing game/sim community. We want you to be challenged by our software, to be challenged rain or shine, day or night, old or new, and what better track to challenge you than the one we announced today via our friends at Inside Sim Racing?

We hope those of you who will want to participate in the open modders beta testing period are almost ready… "

Am I the only one that wasn't that impressed?

IMO, it looks like another RFactor mod. The RF2 trailer didn't really seem all that impressive to me at all. I think I may be a little spoiled after seeing C.A.R.S (and that is pre-alpha!).

I liked RFactor a lot and spent many hours with it, and I am sure this one will be great as well. However, if the video is any indication, it doesn't look like there is that much of a difference graphically over the original RFactor.

They did say this was just a teaser and all of the graphics and special effects haven't been added yet. Looks pretty good to me though. smile

Yes, it's based around the same engine as rF1 so there's a limit to what is possible. The extra lighting effects/texture details and environmental factors will go a long way to making it feel better but graphically it's essentially rFactor with a new set of clothes. It's great to see WIP screenshots but i do question if it's a good strategy to keep showing screens that have sometime been a bit lacklustre.

I think what most people are looking forward to are the enhanced physics and extra features, and in some ways i applaud ISI for prioritizing this over the eye candy. They are a small team and concentrate on the most important things. In the long term that's what makes or breaks a serious sim. However with iRacing and now C.A.R.S (which graphically blows everything out of the water) developers are definitely raising the standard of what people expect.

ISI might just get away with it this time but the bar is definitely being raised, it won't be too long before simply having great physics and features isn't enough.

But for now i'll take it. yep

C.A.R.S. = DirectX 11

F1 2010 / 2011 = DirectX 11

DiRT 3 = DirectX 11

rFactor 2 = DirectX 9

GTR Evolution = DirectX 9

Race Room Retro (Simbin) = DirectX 9

iRacing = IIRC, DirectX 8 (pixel shader 2.0)

DX11 requires much more work to optimize, and the argument goes that there are not that many (by percent of customer market base) DX11 card owners yet. At some point devs will need to step-up, but for now DX 9 still can hold its own.

If you're familiar with DCS: A-10C Warthog, it is DX9, and it has some gorgeous graphics.

But DX9 cannot do tessellation like DX11 can. Small development shops do not have the people power to generate bleeding edge and while they are more likely to generate a true simulation for the niche, they could also be constantly behind in graphics technology. The unique thing about C.A.R.S. is, unless they have a huge dev team hidden away somewhere, they break that mold.

IMO.
