I may see it in the theatre but I'm not sure yet. There seems to be a lot of confusion over this film since a lot of sources keep calling it a "remake" but it's in fact a prequel.

Well, it IS pretty stupid to have a prequel with the same name as the original! However, they're not the first to do it. A very successful one came out just 2 years ago...Star Trek!

Yeah using the same title is dumb from an artistic perspective but they obviously did it for marketing reasons. Name recognition!

I'm hoping to go see it in theater. My wife and I watched the original Carpenter movie other night since it's been a while.
There's a story leading up to the original movie, with the Norwegians(?) finding the ship and then having their run in. Their story ends at the start of the first Carpenter movie.

Haven't see the actual original in so long that I can't remember anything except for the resolution at the end. I wonder if they will tie that in somehow too?

It's a REMAKE. Nothing to do with prequels, sequels, or other quels. Kurt Russells part turned to a hottie chick, same location, base, story, MONSTER, etc. Not rocket science, just good science fiction.

From the link,

"The producers convinced Universal Studios to allow them to create a prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing instead of a remake, as they felt Carpenter's film was already perfect, so making a remake would be like "painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa". However, the prequel still has the title of the original film, because they couldn't think of a subtitle (for example, "The Thing: Begins") that sounded good."

No, I think he realizes that it's technically a remake. It's just that it's the same story, monster, paranoia about who's a monster and who isn't....etc. Kind of feel the same way. Just getting some more mileage out of it. I'll see it, but when I can rent it.

It's NOT the same story. This new film will cover events that LEAD UP to where the story starts in the John Carpenter film.

That's like saying "Gods & Generals" is a remake of "Gettysburg".

That's what I take from it PM.
Watch the Carpenter movie again. The post that found the ship and alien went through the same crap, but chased it off in the form of one of their dogs. They chased it to the US outpost shooting at it, but got killed in the process. They go check out the other outpost to see what it was all about and find the block of ice the alien was in, death...carnage etc.

The same story in the sense that the Alien movies are the same story. Plenty of room for a well done monster flick.
Agreed on it being odd using the exact same movie title but not being a remake. Great idea to fill in the early story IMO, something wide open in the last flick to be explored.

First 20 minutes of the last film:

Thanks for that. I forgot about the music at the beginning. Just the base Dadum.... Dadum,

Awesome movie.

I think the prequel will play out mostly like the original, but as most others said i hope they flesh out some of the story line.

Interesting to note, i thought in the prequel trailer, i saw a flash of the space ship the "thing" originally crashed in which resembled well the ship in the original.

I wonder if the alien ship crashed because the aliens picked up the virus ?

That makes sense since this new film will involve the Norwegian team. In the original we see one member of the Norwegian team who utters one line and then he's dead!

I mean honestly, what are they going to say? "Watch The Thing, then when that's over see the rest of the story when you watch The Thing!"

It's Arnold at his best in The Terminator!

Then, Arnold "is back" in the sequel The Terminator!

Finally, John Connor must face his inevitable destiny when Arnold returns for The Terminator!

LOL Jedi.

I myself thought this was a remake of a remake. Neet idea of telling us the story behind the mysterious norwegian chase at the beginning of the thing. I thought it was a remake of a remake because the trailers show the alien being in the block of ice. That is a distinct scene from both previous movies.

And don't forget gentlemen......

The new trailer for the new film contains the elements in the original "The Thing". Discovery of the alien ship and the thawing of the creature in the block of ice.

The Thing from Another Worlds 1951

This trailer seems more of a remake of the original 1951 treatment.

John Carpenters film is one of my all time favourites can stand as a sequel or on its own. It has a unique mood and pace. Sometimes I'll watch the original Flight of the Pheonix or the remake depending on my mood.

RK, they made a patch that fixed the camera issues for The Thing. Makes it more playable. I never finished it either but as in the movies, I also like games with that cold, stormy closed-in environment.

I've never seen The Thing in all its entirety. I have seen The Thing multiple times and have it on DVD. I do hope to see The Thing when it comes out as well or perhaps I'll wait until it comes to DVD.

biggrin

Lol panzer I was playing off of Jedi's post about the possible confusion of these movies because they are all named the same lol.

I've only seen parts of the original, I have seen and own Carpenter's version with Kurt Russel and would like the see the new one coming out.

If you like the Antartica setting, there's a movie called Whitout. No aliens just a murder mystery and the cool setting. And it has Kate Beckinsale popcorn

Thoroughly enjoyed Whiteout. The ending was a little anti-climatic, but it was definitely enjoyable.

It's not Antarctica, but Alaska, but a really good vamp movie in a similar type of setting is 30 Days of Night. Definitely not the Twilight version of vampires. LOL

Sounds interesting RK though I'm not a vampire fan. I do like movies also set in Alaska. Insomnia is one. To keep in theme with the sci-fi or supernatural I think The Fourth Kind takes place in Alaska. I have it but haven't watched it yet. I'm a little too behindcouch

These vamps are more along the lines of aliens or something. Not very traditional. More Nosferatu looking.

Since we're on the topic of movies in the cold, can I recommend "Arctic Blast" for pure comedy value?

Starring Canadian heart-throb Michael Shanks, "you might remember him from such TV shows as....Stargate and Mega Snake"

This was a great movie delivering pretty consistent laugh out loud moments exactly what the trailer indirectly promised.

I won't spoil it except to say that the 'blast' in question doesn't come from the Artic as suggested by the title, nor does it originate from the Antarctic (which it is closer to). I'll also say that anyone speaking part who isn't Blonde is as good as dead. Just count them as you watch.

And look out for the picture of the bosses 'wife on desk', not only is she sticking out her boobs in an amusing fashion, the photo is curiously positioned next to a box of doughnuts. But the hilarious part is that when we see the wife enter the office, she's wearing the exact same clothes as in the picture.

This movie is a gem and the whole family had a good laugh, kids joined in the riffing and much fun was had by all. Mr Shanks was professional throughout and my admiration for his talent as an actor was not diminished in any way.

Way better than Stonehenge Apocalypse.

I loved John Carpenter's The Thing. Funny how it was, essentially, a biological rootkit, if one was to look for the closest analogy. thumbsup

Yeah, are you referring to the movie, or the alien?

I'm just saying that the alien in the film acts in the same fashion as a rootkit would to your computer. Infects your system, takes it over at the kernel level, but appears and acts completely normal on the surface. Below the surface, however, it has its own agenda.

went and saw it this afternoon with my wife, both fans of the original.

It is definitely a prequel and a very accurate one at that , in fact the end credits have a screen that links directly to the original ( without giving too much away) including a sudden change to the soundtrack that brings in the great John Carpenter music.

We both enjoyed it, maybe a little biassed as has an aussie actor as the main american character/ chopper pilot. Very authetic setting and the norwegians speak in their native language which adds authenticity. Late in the movie when the action moves to the alien ship, there was a danger that the plot could go haywire but luckily it came together. I'd give it 3/5 ,
Makes you realise when watching 2011 CGI, how well done the original was for its time.

Finally watched this on BRD and have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It did have the same vibe and rhythm as the first one, and that is not necessarily a bad thing. It felt more like an Aliens/The Thing hybrid due to the role of the female lead. Few negatives from me: the climatic sequence was close to ruin the movie, however, they toned it down on time. Also, I think that what kills some of the enjoyment is that you know what to expect... still, lots of tension finding out who is human or not.

They also introduce a new bit of info on the ability of the alien to replicate that clears up a plot point that was ambiguous on the first one.

Click to reveal..
The alien can't copy inorganic material (tooth fillings, etc.). In the "sequel" it was left to the viewer to decide if the character "Childs" was a copy or human. Well... Childs wears an earring. Still there at the end.

I give it an 8/10. (first one being a 9.5/10)

Decent movie!

Still not sure why scientists have all that military hardware just lying about, but it's a silly action movie about 10,000 year old frozen aliens...I'm probably overthinking it!
