I've been to 3 ST conventions and sadly, Nimoy was not the main guest at any of them. He will definitely be missed but of course I don't blame him at all for retiring from the convention circuit.

I've never been to a Star Trek convention and hadn't planned on going to one but hearing he was retiring still made me sad.

Indeed. Its an awfully long time to be going to conventions...when did they start, in the 1970's?

I guess it had to happen some time. I think I only went to one Star Trek convention, and Nichelle Nichols was the guest at that one. I say I think I only went to one because I've been to ComiCon a bunch of times and they have kind of the same feel, especially in ComiCon's earlier days, but I think I only went to one dedicated Star Trek con.
Going off on a tangent, a friend of mine was really into Space: 1999, and they had a convention for that back in the late '80s or early '90s up in L.A., so for kicks three of us went up for that. Barbara Bain was the guest speaker there, and I got the impression she had no idea why people were so into that show, but she was very nice to everyone. I think only about 40 people showed up, and it was in a very small conference room at a hotel.

and I got the impression she had no idea why people were so into that show, I remember a relatively recent quote from Katee Sackhoff where she basically said that it never ceases to amaze her how dedicated sci-fi fans are. But Space: 1999 is really surprising mostly due to it being a low budget cult sci-fi show that wasn't even shot in the US.

I think that was their major source of income at the time, or a significant portion of it. Thinking of Star Trek conventions, I can't help but think of Galaxy Quest.

I can't help but think of Galaxy Quest. Haha! That movie more than any other perfectly encapsulated the sci-fi convention culture. Even Bruce Boxleitner mentioned Galaxy Quest in one of his commentaries for Babylon 5 and he mentioned how right on the money the movie was with its portrayal of sci-fi conventions and how the actors deal with them.

I really liked the movie and it still makes me laugh when I see it. Imo, Alan Rickman did a great job with his character. Wheels

Yeah, GQ was a great comedy. Many have wondered if the rock monster was a direct reference to the failed end of Star Trek 5, as well.
I don't know when James Doohan's last ST convention was, or D Kelley's, but frankly any one can be the "last."

Wheels His performance was my favorite from Galaxy Quest even though the entire main cast did a great job.
