I'm looking to upgrade my CPU and have narrowed it down to the 2600 chip. When I compared the 2600 and 2600K on Newegg, I noticed no difference in specs other than the price. So, what is the actual difference between these two chips?

The multiplier is not locked down so to OC it, just raise the multiplier. That's how so many are running it in the 4.5Ghz range and the suicide run guys are running it in the 5Ghz range. Even Intel's most expensive CPU can't compete with the unlocked multiplier 2600k when it's running at such speeds.

OK, thanks. In my case, overclcocking doesn't appeal to me at all, so going with the 2600 is fine.

You can still OC it anyway by upping the 'front side bus' instead of using the multiplier.

I'd go with the 2600K. If you ever decide to sell the CPU to fund a future build, the 2600K would be worth more to an overclocker.

I did not think you could do that since it has a integrated video chip running at the same FSB speed. I could be wrong.

Good point, but it's a bit late now. biggrin I ordered the 2600. That, and about the only parts I sell anymore are old video cards.

However,

OC with SandyBridge isn`t Rocket-science anymore. Just typing in the new multiplier in the BIOS (for my CPU exchanging 34 with 45), done. Works only with K models though.

The 2600k is so easy to overclock. Technically, it harder to install RAM than overclock the 2600k. You don't even need to do it in Bios. You can do it in Windows even.
