In the 1860s, Maxwell discovered his four PDE equations governing the electric field. These equations all give an advanced solution that seem to indicate a break with causality and an event could be seen before it happens. When Fenyman came along 90 years later, he interpreted this as antimatter traveling backwards in time, but the solution is also equally valid if you say particles can move faster than light speed c. Since the results are so strange, mainstream physicist and engineers have discarded the advanced solutions and normalized the retarded solutions (the ones relevant to our physical world). For the LHC, it is possible new and strange results will emerge; that is why it was built. But, I have a feeling this is a detector issue. Time will tell....
