In the 1860s, Maxwell discovered his four PDE equations governing the electric field. These equations all give an advanced solution that seem to indicate a break with causality and an event could be seen before it happens. When Fenyman came along 90 years later, he interpreted this as antimatter traveling backwards in time, but the solution is also equally valid if you say particles can move faster than light speed c. Since the results are so strange, mainstream physicist and engineers have discarded the advanced solutions and normalized the retarded solutions (the ones relevant to our physical world). For the LHC, it is possible new and strange results will emerge; that is why it was built. But, I have a feeling this is a detector issue. Time will tell....

WG - Another interesting way this might go is that we've been using photons as the benchmark for the speed of light. Imagine if actually they are a tiny bit slower than c. That way relativity still all squares up and these results make sense. It's an exciting time, in that our model has so far been proven so right in so many ways before, but again this..

You might be right about the detector issue, but LHC have been down-playing this for 3 years and continuously retesting. Even if it's a LHC wrong assumption on how distance/neutrino types are assumed to be then it's a big deal.

This will be amazing if true. It's also a great snapshot of how modern science works. They've spotted something odd and theoretically impossible, so they're opening up what they've done, and saying 'hey guys, look at this, have we stuffed up or is this awesome?'

It also made me think of this quote:

Isn't that why they are called Theories.

If this turns out to be true, it strongly suggests the possibility of sending information back in time.

That should make the outcome of all past wars considerably more interesting than just chapters in history textbooks.
