Latest rumor. At least, we're rumoring less than an month -- 3 weeks to Bulldozer.

Several models at a range of prices. Best is the FX8150 at $245. The 6 Core Bulldozer is only $175. We'll see smile

Bulldozer October 12

In other rumors, GTX6xx delayed until mid 2012. So, things are going slowly all over.

So I figure now is a good time to ask:

What's Bulldozer bringing to the table? It's tough to find legit info, because most of the google results are from the speculation period, and many tech blogs are smart enough to not put a date on blog posts.

So far, I've only read three reports purporting to give accurate data from an engineering sample. Presumably, since the first engineering samples, Bulldozer has been "improved" a couple times (thus the delays). So, those old vague tests are probably out of date.

The most likely correct rumor is that Bulldozer was designed to overclock and overclocks well -- almost certainly 4.5GHz and possibly 4.8GHz on air. It did smash the multi-core and single-core record for OC with liquid Helium, but I suppose none of us are going to do that smile

Next in order: The 8 core version has 8 full time cores that can handle 8 full time threads. That won't make much (or any) difference in games for a year or two. But, it is better than the higher priced Intel i7 at 4 full time threads (or 8 part time threads). Folks doing video editing and some other things may do better with Bulldozer -- 8 is twice as much as 4 (Intel does have a 6 core version that costs a small fortune).

Lastly: Core for core and clock for clock, Bulldozer is faster than Phenom II and probably a bit slower than Intel i7. Nonetheless, it is rumored close and costs significantly less. Also, Bulldozer may OC higher than i7 -- thus, closing the gap for enthusiasts. The top 4 core Bulldozer stock speed is 4.2GHz -- and its cheap vs. gamer Intel 4 core processors.

Very vague: Intel i7 has special instructions specifically for video processing that Phenom II does not have. So, in some non-game benchmarks that use those instructions, i7 can be twice as fast as Phenom II per core (lots of comparative test reports use those benchmarks and make Phenom II look sick -- but it only applies to a few users). I think I read Bulldozer will have those same instructions (usually, when Intel introduces new instructions, AMD stuff gets them in the next generation) -- plus Bulldozer has the extra full time cores.

I should mention that one of those 3 tests did show Bulldozer beating i7-2600K. But the test conditions were too vague to put much stock into the result.

That's it so far. Bulldozer competitive (wins some loses some) with i7 for less money seems very likely. More than that, we must wait and see smile

the info i've seen from AMD's dev site look legit.

I think they are gonna be cheaper than PhenomII's

Three weeks then? I wonder if the price in Europe will be 199€ or lower.

Very concise, as always Allen!

Just to be clear, the AM3 platform is NOT being supported by Bulldozer though, correct? I thought I read a while ago that there were some MOBO manu's building AM3+ boards, with "guarunteed" Bulldozer compatibility, but that BD would have had to made too many architecture concessions if it left a foot planted in the AM3 spec. Again, that was at the start of the year, so I was wondering if that had been solidified at least.

There are a number of AM3+ motherboards using the older 8xx series chipsets. Some 8xx series AM3 motherboards become AM3+ with an up to date BIOS flash. Have to check with the MB manufacturer. But, unflashed AM3 is not expected to support Bulldozer.

Not having a 9xx chipset does not cost performance, however there is something missing -- I forget what -- so it must not be important to me, at least. Anyhow, some folks with AM3 motherboards need only flash the BIOS to support Bulldozer.

Rumor is, the mid 2012 Piledriver (Bulldozer update) will also work on AM3+ motherboards. AMD is trying to keep its reputation for supporting new CPUs on old MBs.

Something for the Intel fans smile

Solid rumor that Intel plans to release the i7-2700K in the near future -- probably in response to the Bulldozer.

The i7-2700K 4 core will have stock clocks of 3.6GHz -- 0.1GHz higher than i7-2600K (like Bulldozer 3.6GHz 8 core). It is rumored to be "cherry picked" to compete with Bulldozer in OC. Nice as an AMD fan to see that Intel has to "cherry pick" a 4 core to match a standard Bulldozer 8 core GHz. It will cost rumored $331 vs Bulldozer rumored $245. Of course, we still don't know how the two will compare in benchmarks.

i7-2700K Rumor

Competition is good smile

Some of the newer revisions of AM3 board will support AM3+ chip through a BIOS update - CONFIRMED. They do mention support though, which leads to beleive there will be limitations if not using a native AM3+ board.

Selected AM3 Boards will get a bios update to allow AM3+ CPUs, however you will be missing some power management features that is accessible through the 942nd Pin on the AM3+ Pin-Array / AMD 900 Series Chipsets.

Also the 8xx Series Chipset's HyperTransport 3.0 (up to 5.2GT/s) don't have the HT Link speed of the 9xx Chipset's HyperTransport 3.1 (up to 6.4GT/s). So You may not be able to put the 8 Core Bulldozer in a AM3-941 Pin board, or if you can it will have a crippled H.T. Link Speed.

Not to mention AM3+ w/ 9xx Series supports both SLi And XFire.
