Another P-51 lost. Such a shame.

We just received confirmation that the pilot in the crash was Jimmy Leeward and he flew the Galloping Ghost. There's no word on his condition.

Airplane crash at Reno air races 2011 Friday sept 16

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

I never trust early information; but they are saying 30 spectators were killed and 70 injured.

If true, the drums will start beating about airshows being unsafe, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Still blurry reports on BBC News, but apparently the P51 crashed into the grand stand :-(
What a tragedy.

Any idea what might have caused him to pop up like that?

No idea in this scenario but in aircraft, you want to trade speed for altitude in any failure. It's likely he was trying to gain altitude to work the issue out. Instead it failed and came down.

On CNN earlier they said he called a Mayday and pulled up. That clears you out of the mess of other airplanes and gets you altitude if you do have a problem. Said it was SOP for air races. No idea what happened after that. I have heard a couple of different reports about the plane hitting or not hitting grandstands.

I don't know what to say. Shocking, tragic, heart breaking. Sorry for all involved.
