We are working on the future of Yankee Air Pirate, as you may have guessed. One thing we don't know is if you actually read the briefings and fly the missions. The briefings are...well...brief. But the missions are detailed and challenging. We assume the First Person Shooter gamers will not be interested in reliving a real flight, but we don't know that either.

So, I re-flew one of our missions and was amazed at how good this stuff is. This one is a mission flown by Gary Retterbush in an F-4E. Major Retterbush made TWO MiG-21 gun kills in a Phantom. Something like that should make him a known name in aviation but for some reason, it never happened. On his previous combat tour, he was a 100-mission Thud pilot...another important milestone. I have spoken with him to get his input on his missions and his feel for the missions. Air to air is somewhat odd in WOV but the ones we included are more realistic. Getting a gun kill in this one requires you to hit the KC-135 and get enough fuel to maneuver at full tilt and the situational awareness to work for the angle on the more nimble MiG. (If you run low, you can hit the tanker on your way back to Korat.)

First some pictures.

On station as escort for Chevy flight.

Blue Bandit call.

Jettison tanks. Light the AB. Green 'em up.

G's.

Gun kill.

RTB. And, yes, this is what they do when you bring home a scalp.

Then, these questions:
Did you fly this?
How much fuel did you take on at the tanker?
Did you go to missiles or make a gun kill?
Did you fly it all the way to landing?
Pop the drag chute?
Drop it off the runway?
See the party?

We are also curious to find out if our customers check this forum. We have lots of customers but almost no postings from them aside for requests for tech assistance.

Thanks.

Nice shots! Yankee Air Pirate isn't currently in my library, but with all these great screenshots and discussions, I may have to reconsider!

New user here, so far I've only gotten to fire up the Gila Bend training mission. I taxied out and took off easily enough. I think the tower cleared me on a specific runway but the radio was a little hard to understand out of the small PC speakers - normally I would be using headphones. Luckily I didn't run into any other traffic. Once I'd gotten up to a decent altitude I flailed around a bit trying to navigate and made a couple of strafing runs but soon realized I was missing out on the navigation and refueling etc.. Burned through the gun ammo quickly and didn't know how to switch to the rocket pods.. In other words, that I needed to print out a keymap before going much further, but I'd just installed and wanted to get a quick look. I'm looking forward to sitting down and really digging in over the weekend. Based on initial impressions though, it's exactly what I was hoping for!

Hey guys, I always check this forum - great shots and future content updates. Those questions you ask make these missions what they are. You allow us to get into the heads of the men who were there - put on our headphones and get totally immersed in these missions - any game can make a mission but THESE actually happened. That fact alone makes YAP stand out from all the others. Hopefully there will be a YAP 2 for WOV2 to take advantage of the graphical updates. Keep up the great work, Charlie

Colmack,

John would be more familar with the term "Dustoff" can you elaborate a bit for me and I'll see whats on the planning board. There is always room for an mission if we have solid info on a for real once upon a time and we can verify. Then the trick is to see if John can make it happen in game.

We have reworked most of the AC, the Helos all have new FM's and are very fun to fly, and we are revamping some of the GO's especially the CV's, for our working title "YAP3".

Dustoff is the term used for the medical evacuation helicopters, that would land in the Hot LZ and grab the wounded usually unarmed but having that nice red cross on them made really nice aiming points,

What i think would be cool is that if after a guy landed at the LZ they could activate maybe the bombbay key to show wounded in the cabin and then take them to aid station and dump the casualties like the assault team missions

Here are some pretty compelling story's from the DustOff Association

I'm reading Firebirds from Chuck Carlock nowadays and some of those stories could make a great addition to YAP3!
Honest!

Those stories are hair raising!

I must admit I haven't flown too many missions in YAP, not because they are too hard or anything, I just got distracted by modding the game and spend more time doing that lately.

And its partly due to YAP2/RS and all of the cool stuff you build! I will definately will be getting YAP3 because I have moved on to SF2V and Win 7.

For future endevors, have you thought about an all helo mod, call it say, Death From Above (DFA) ?

Get those pesky Migs to stay up North please. No Sidewinders on my Cobra, LOL

Keep up the good work!

We are going to release it all at once so that ties the YAP3 upgrade to the arrival of several aircraft models for Set 10. I think we are looking at 3 weeks to get the last two aircraft into the game. We have plenty to do in the mean time.

Yes. I read the briefs and fly the missions. CAS is what I like best. I try to fly a good pattern, locate the friendlies and the target, set up a good attack, pull off with a safe separation, jink for AAA, climb back to altitude and do it all again. Sooner or later I end up in the weeds slinging anything left under the wings at anything that's a target until bingo. Then fly it back to landing, but not always to parking.

Thanks to the gentlemen who flew it for real and to YAP for giving the rest of us a chance to learn about it.
