Wonderful day at a range.

Took Ak74(saiga/arsenal), M91/30 scoped and pimped out M14 to a range. For 5 hours. It seems time just passes by so quickly.

Red Dot

AK Scope.

Still haven't got used to all of rifles...but getting there.

200 meters. Big holes are 7.62x51nato (40 years old German stuff) (5 hits out of 7). Small are 5.45x39 (surplus Russian stuff) (4 hits out of 5).

Best grouping of m91 at 100m.

many holes. All 200 meters. 5 holes by M91 aiming for the head.(2 misses). 7.62x51 - 20 rounds body. 15 rounds of 5.45x39 into body - No misses.

Bloody wonderful time and met few interesting characters.

Nice, love that 91/30. What year is it?

Always like seeing other folk's M14's too. That's a scout, correct?

I shoot too. A lot of trap with my benelli supersport, but I shoot rifles too. I have a cz 858 (closest to an AK that we can get up here in Canuckistan), a robinson arms XCR, a couple of 10/22's, an M-14 and a Savage 93R17 TRR.

Target at 50 yards with XCR.

I have an EoTech on it now.

M-14's a nice rifle, but it is almost as heavy as a cinder block.

A real tack driver though.

Interesting M1A. I don't care at all for the railworks on the bottom of the forearm, but I'd love to give it a try. The rest of the furniture looks intersting. Looks like it eliminates the weak sister of the M14/M1A; the scope mounting system. Looks like it encases the receiver in a mono-block of synthetic and uses the integral top rail for optics. I'd like to try that to see how it works for height and eye relief. Shooting is great fun. I find that the focus required allows me to go into a Zen-like relaxation and all my other problems and concerns disappear for a while. Always fun to try something new or to shoot-in a new set-up.

But the M14/M1A is an old sentimental favorite of mine. That is what I used in Sniper School and for actual work. But I prefer this look:

and it shoots like this :

Nice shots,,would be good to have you near when the zombies come. I used to shoot but I found hitting the target was preffered so I gave it up, now I just use shotguns.

That was 11 or 12 rounds at 100 yards. Would have been nicer if I didn't pull that one shot to the right.

Does that set-up put the optics a bit high ? I see that rig doesn't have any sort of cheek piece so getting a proper spot weld must be difficult.

As Rick asked, is that stock aluminum ? My first thought was some kind of synthetic.

Optics are not high, fits and feels OK. The only issue I have with it is that entire laser dot is not exactly precise. at 200 meters it covers entire head...plus barrel is shorter than usual. But it's accurate with 40 years old German stuff.

Stuck feels synthetic as in plastic, but it's described as aluminum. More info - http://desertwarriorproducts.com/M14_Stock_Troy.html

OG, there are a few new aluminum stocks for the M-14, and one of the benefits is that you dont need to glass bed the stock for the best accuracy, it just fits super tight and doesnt flex. There's no significant advantage over a nice bedded wood stock '14, but its easier on maintenance for infantry marksmen in the field, more rails for night ops designators and bipods. If I were to be sent to Afghanistan, I'd want the aluminum, but back home here, I prefer the wood.

I dont have wood on my M-14, making do with the "passable" black synthetic...but I really want a nice GI walnut or birch stock! Or a fancy pepper laminate wood stock from Boyds.

A guy I know here makes carbon fibre stocks for the M-14, some with telestocks, some with marksmanship stocks, and they feel really nice, high quality.

Sim, what ammo are you shooting. I have found that M1A's have a different appetite for ammo. Some shoot better with light grains and some better with heavy grain. Mine does best with the 168 grain. But I haven't shot beyond 200 yards in a few years, so I;m not sure what would do better at 600+.

Your rig looks very interesting. But I really dislike bottom rails. It makes my grip feel terrible. Can't stand the notchy rail feel and if you fire 60 or more rounds it really starts to feel uncomfortable.

But that top rail is good. I don't hang much in the way of Tacticool stuff on most of my rifles so wouldn't use all the rails.

Knock on wood, but my original mount is still holding good. But eventually they all work loose. The Picatinney rails are the answer.

I'm shooting surplus stuff. Also, this toy is relatively new. I fired less than 80 rounds from it so far and previous owner who installed Rembo stuff less than 200 so I haven't had time to experience various ammo types. Here's a description on ammo type from website I used to purchase.

Quote:
308 German manufactured 7.62x51 Nato 147Gr FMJ boat tail non corrosive berdan primed brass cased ammunition. It has a 7.62x51 Nato standard bullet of 147gr FMJ. Brass case has circle cross head stamp. It has a lead core bullet and it does attract a magnet. 200 round green or clear vinyl battle packs.

http://www.jgsales.com/product_info.php/...roducts_id/5671

I'm wondering how much that shorter barrel would make a difference vs regular size?

As for that bottom rail, it's possible to add mods for it; a handle or slanted surface to hold. Or they sell stuff that doesn't have bottom rail at all. User preference.

Some of my favorite SimHQ firearm pictures in this thread, OG's M14 (nice shooting BTW) and Paul with his XCR. Very nice.

I've never shot anything less than 150Gr (usually MagTech) through my M14, preferring 168Gr or even 175Gr (Federal Gold Medal). I've never tried any of those 147Gr German NATO battle pack rounds, been tempted though as they're real affordable. Also been considering getting some 147Gr Lake City bulk rounds for the M14.

Is a 147Gr FMJBT bullet in 7.62x51mm pretty standard for military usage?

If done properly, there is only about a 100fps drop in velocity. And accuracy is either the same, or in some cases a slight increase (less barrel whip). It shortens the front end a LOT, considering how long the standard flashhider is. Its a popular modification in Canada, where M-14's are cheap and getting cheaper. Saw a used one for sale just $300.

Yea, I'm 99% sure that's NATO standard for rifles and GPMG's.

Sniping and Designated Marksmen use more precise stuff, Americans seem to use Sierra Matchking, heavier too. Dunno if there's a NATO standard for that. Maybe back in the 70's and 80's but now probably not, too many good options.

The military standard sniper ammunition was/is Lake City M118 .308 marked "Long Range" 175 grain Sierra. It now has the open tip. When I was working it wasn't. It was full metal jacket boat-tail without the open tip. They have found the open tip has superior ballistics and wound attributes. It was thought that the 175 grain was harder on the M14 than 168, but it was kept common because of the bolts and semis. You can feel the difference in recoil with the 175 over 150. I can't feel the difference with 175 and 168.

Yep, OG, that's what I suspected. I rememeber buying rounds for my new M1A\M14, I got the 150Gr because you had said to use a low bullet weight to break in the barrel. Once the break-in period was finished and I started shooting the 168Gr & 175Gr Sierra BTHP gold medal stuff, I knew it was the right load for me. It's expensive, but the accuracy is much better than anything else I've tried. I try to keep 200 rounds of both those Sierra BTHP weights on hand, only shooting them when I go to the range by myself. Got a good sized batch of the 150Gr still on hand, and will probably get some 147Gr stuff too for when the gf wants to shoot the M14. If the time comes, I'm sure I'll be glad I've got a good stash of rounds for old Bess...I figure the zombies won't know the difference anyway. smile

I bought 6,000 of the Nosler 168 gr Match when they had a half price sale. So I have about 8,000 rounds of "good stuff" and about another 3,000 lesser ones. People get wrapped up in the price of a gun when it is the price of ammo that really makes ownership costly.

Vault, what mount did you put on it ? What optics ?

That is totally true!

Oh, I have read that anyone wanting to shoot heavier than 168's through an M-1A/M-14 type needs to get the gas adjusted, or risk heavier impacts on their parts, leading to early failure. Something about how the rifle was tuned originally, vs parts velocity. A good 'smith would know where to look.

Currently my M1A/M14 has a SA 4th generation steel scope mount with a Leupold 3-9x50 VXR scope (the scope from my deer rifle). This setup is temporary though. I'd considered getting a Troy Industries Battle Rail system, which replaces the fiberglass upper piece with a rail system.

http://troyind.com/%20/battlerails/troy-battlerail-m14

I'm not really into the tacticool look either, especially with my M1A, which has a walnut stock and black barrel. I think what I'm going to end up doing is putting a custom 3 point mount on it, which is what you recommended when I first bought the rifle. I'm still saving the money for that work and some better optics, as I intend to return the Leupold scope to my deer rifle.

Any recommendations on what type of optics I should get would be much appreciated.

Very cool!

Just got back from the range, where I took my son to shoot his Mossberg model 350 pump 12 gauge.

For his 16th birthday all he's wanted (for years and years) is the shotgun, so consider it promise made, promise kept. Picked it up Thursday and he's been super patient in waiting on a range day.

We have been covering gun safety since he was running around with cap guns, so no worries! I must say I was very pleased that he listened well and conducted himself safely and within all of the range rules.

That he got dialed in within three rounds was one of those "pump up the chest" Dad moments. Anybody that can solidly hit a silhouette at 50 yards with a full choke shotgun (nothing but dust behind it) gets my thumbs-up.

The only thing that is weird is that he's right handed but left eye dominant. Teaching someone to shoot left handed is really odd in a way.

That is actually pretty common. I'm it as well.

It can be trained away, but I've just not had time to do so.

Does anyone know the word on the Bushmaster ACR? Would it be a nice replacement for a standard AR-15? or is it a gimmick? How about the H&K MR556? Let me know your thoughts...

Don't know a whole lot about the H&K MR556, but would like to fire one. Right now it seems to be the most expensive rifle in this type of design, you could probably get an FN SCAR for a few hundred less. There's also the Sig 556 which is by far the least expensive of this type of rifle

Most ACR setups are currently a little less expensive than the H&K and FN models. I've had one for a while now, and I love it. It's really easy to maintain, and can be quickly switched to 6.8mm with just a barrel change and popping in the appropriate magazine (my favorite feature). I've got an M4 too, but definitely prefer shooting the ACR. During the break in period for the 5.56mm barrel, I fired mostly 55Gr PMC loads. Now I mostly feed it with 62Gr XM855 SS109 rounds from Lake City. It shoots like a dream, and chews through the ammo like candy. I haven't had a single problem with it. Currently the second favorite rifle in my collection, lagging just behind my M1A/M14.

Here's an older picture of it, previously posted in one of the apocalypse threads. I've added a Trijicon 4x32 scope since then.

Some Canadians have reported problems with the ACR, mostly feeding issues IIRC.

That's true, I believe there was a recall for a feeding issue with ACR's manufactured in '09. I've never had any feeding problems with mine, though I do recommend getting Magpul polymer magazines, which is all I ever use in both the ACR and the M4. I've seen so many people who can't get more than a shot or two off without a feeding problem using cheap metal magazines.

I prefer to wait for others to "beta test" new gun designs for a decade of use, before I'd consider buying!

C Products also makes good magazines for the AR-15.

More shooting run. m91/30 scoped vs ~150meters target. Target is old harddrive!

Impact holes from Ak74. 5.45 goes through hard rives like butter.

I have an old Maxtor HDD I wouldn't mind shooting. A hole burned into it while it was on so it will not work anyways. I am very glad I had the case open that moment, or else the whole PC might have burned down. I saw the "red light" go on and assumed there was an error with the HDD as I never saw a red light before. Turned the PSU off, and the light went off, and smoke poured out of the tiny hole.

Thanks. It's not original unfortunately. That scope is make to original specs in 2008 and modified to a regular rifle.

Luke, would you know where I can buy m38 for a reasonable cost?

I gave $800 for mine, used. Including 1 10-round, 1 20-round and 2 30-round mags, and a 1-6x scope. New they are around $1600.

But right now there is a hold on processing all applications for semi-automatic rifles after the events this summer.

Ah, OK. A couple of places online have all-original ones for sale right now, and more sites are planning on offering them later on this year.

Sadly, no. The only ones I know of right now are those on Gunbroker, and those usually go for a steep price. Makes me glad I got mine when I did.

This thread reminds me that I haven't been to the range in a while. Flying has been taking up a lot of my free time.

Had some fun today shooting at 10 yards. From left to right - CZ52, TT33 (Yugo), FNH9, TT33(Romanian), .44Mag S&W.

Pulled like a champ on bottom right target. One of those holes isn't mine...as time went on, after about 200 rounds, arm got tired and groups became worse (didn't take pictures of it). About 1.5 hours at a range with pistol is about right.

Christ with the barrel on that .44 it's no wonder your arm got tired! I've got a Dan Wesson pistol pack(interchangeable barrels). I've never felt the need to put the 8" barrel on...

I have a Sig 556 and I love that firearm, all controls for locking bolt setting mags and racking can be done from support hand. I am thinking of changing out the fore grips when I start to shoot 3 gun as the ergonomics of the grips does not allow my hand to really form around the grip, makes target accusition harder and slower.

Speedo, Actually I really like it. In general the feel of the firearm is better to me. When I change the fore grips it may slightly change the way it sits in my hand but for competion I feel I will gain more then I lose. In fact I wish sig made a 308 version I would pick that up in a heart beat.

Shooting fun overload!

Yesterday and today I went shooting. Yesterday between 3 people we had 10 rifles and 3 pistols. Rifles: FN SCAR, FN SPR A1a, M44, M91/30 scoped (x2), Yugoslavian K98, Some AR thingy, some AK thingy, SVT40 and Garand!
SWEET!

Today was 600 yards fun.

600 yards target with 10x scope.

25x scope.

Bloody excellent!

SwissArms is seriously thinking of making one in .308w/7.62N, but since there would be no/few mil sales, the projected retail was around $4000 US. Which suggests only modest probability. They showed off a prototype at SHOT a year ago, they called it the SAPR.

Here's the current setup with my freshly cleaned ACR after my most recent trip to the range. I really like this setup so it's likely to stay this way; its only other accessory is a light & mount I have to hang from one of the side rails. Pictured with my newest 1911, a Parkerized S.A. with Trijicon night sights (love this one too), and my assault blade with a lanyard I made for it (not bad for a first attempt making these). The components on the ACR are 3 short Magpul MOE rails (at 3, 6, & 9 o’clock), and a Harris notched leg bipod attached with an American Defense Mfg. quick-release adaptor. The optic is a 4 X 32 Trijicon TA31F ACOG with illuminated red chevron reticle and BDC markings; it's mounted with a TA51 flattop adapter and outfitted with a TA91 Tennebraex Killflash ARD and TA90 flip caps.

Here's a zombie target I shot up at 100 meters, rapid fire using the BAC style aiming that works so well with the ACOG sight; aiming for the brainstem of course. I also spent a few rounds trying to hit the zombie's right eyeball too, but stopped once I saw I'd hit the color of his "good eye"; though I think many of impacts to the right and left are just bad brainstem shots. There's a piece of blue cardstock behind the target to make the hits stand out.

I had a bunch of fun as well. Especially shooting SVT - that's one excellent rifle. I don't want to start fights, but it maybe be better than garand!

And yeah, "noisy cricket" sure hurts for few days after. It's not a range shooter gun, but a defense pistol.

Oh, and post results of M91 once you get it re-sighted. I love its trigger and I have a feeling it might be mighty accurate. Not shooting pennies at 100 yards accurate, but close to it.

Yep, the SVT is a fun gun to shoot. I don't take it out of the safe very often, because I dread cleaning the thing afterwards. I mainly bring out these days when I know I'm going to be shooting with someone who hasn't shot one before or it's been a long time since I've fired it.

Yep, I'll be taking the M91/30 back out probably the first weekend of June. I'm really itching to see what this thing does now. Still can't believe it was two little screws that were causing me all sorts of confusion. biggrin
