Well that guy's a lot of fun. LOL
If you overthink simulation games or hardware, you'll always end up disappointed IMO.
Is this from someone in a position to create a better wheel and offer it commercially?

No, he is a game developer and a programmer of FF in games for the past 10 years.

Ah, ok, I didn't catch that in there.
I guess sometimes it's better not to know how the magic trick is done. Maybe he's leading up to something new.

Actually Mag, thats Leo Bodnar's article. I read it yesterday.. He is in fact in the process of designing (for commercial release) a FFB wheel, although it has been in development for some time now.

As far as i understand it he is quite well respected in the sim community because he makes the boards that people use for their button noxes and the like.

He's also the Leo of the LeoFFb plugin for rFactor.

Yeah I have lots of respect for Leo (I own one of his G25 pedal boxes), but I have avoided that article, as wrong as current FFB may be, I still remember what a revelation it was when I upgraded to a Logitech Wingman Force Wheel from my Thrustmaster T2, GPL came alive for me...

FFB may be incorrect magic, but it is still better than no magic and I don't want my brain to know what's wrong with it until there is something better to replace it :-)

Don't sweat it. "Simulation" isn't the real thing, it just gets the point across. Same for FFB in wheels. If there's a better way for future games to use the wheel, and vice versa, I'm all for it. I think that's all he's saying. Still, very happy to have FFB in the first place. Accurate or not, it adds another dimension to racing games that other games usually just don't get.

Good points.

I've been in some odd chats on iRacing where oval guys have tried to convince me that running FFB just produces canned effects and actually hurts your racing simulation skills.

Of course these were guys that were much faster than me so I will give them the benefit of the doubt on ovals at least (I suck on ovals) but for me FFB is part for the help on feeling what the car is doing, and part for immersion, I wouldn't give it up for both reasons, the same reason that I use the h-shifter and realistic shifting on iRacing even though it makes me slower.

Good man.
I get a chuckle out of those that are in iRacing since it's the best "sim" but then they paddle shift or auto clutch cars that should have a manual and clutch. That is, if they have a clutch and shifter. Might as well switch on the regular aids games have.

I think the problem is not everyone has a shiftier and clutch. Wasn't as common until the G25.

True, but I suspect the iRacing crowd is more likely to have at least a G25/27. One day maybe they'll separate those with car-proper transmission and shifter.

Of course, since NO ONE races a car with a tiny 20-something inch window and field of view with inertial dampeners on to prevent any sensation of motion except in the steering wheel, you could say any argument about levels of realism is moot.
It's all just opinions, and since the only one that matters is your own...
