There are some badass mods that let you play the original X-Wing and Tie Fighter under XWA.

Wait I can play the original xwing under XWA? Yes you can. xwaupgrade.com forums have everything you need (plus the site has all the graphical upgrades you need too... there are a TON). I'm a bit of a modding junkie actually. This mod though, this one is really awesome if you want to get your X-Wing or Tie Fighter fix in. How can you beat playing the originals in the best engine there is (Alliance). Heck, you can even turn on Track IR support (sort of).

Yup!
I had it installed and trying to get the Win7 part going. Put the cd down somewhere and crunch!
It's a shame because I will never buy the cd again. Oh well :p

RockEye,
If you're trying to install on a Win7 machine, make sure you're running the setup file as administrator. After that, it's hard to help without some idea of what's going wrong. Where in the install process is it breaking? What is the reported error?

The program or feature"\??\e:\Install\setup.exe" cannot start or rund due to incompatibity with 64-bit versions of Windows. Please contact teh software vendor to ask if a 64-bit Windows compatible version is available.
I have tried changing the compatibility to xp service pac 1 still no joy....

Too funny. I came to this forum in a desperate attempt to get help with an XWA mission and find this post on the top LOL
Rescue Uncle Anton!!!!!
I do not understand how to beat this mission. I have tried 2 methods:
Sit docked and defend the ship using the turret
or
Drop the droid off and fight the fighters
Either way, I get my ass kicked!
Anyone know if there is a trick?
I never finished this game because of this mission and I am determined to beat it now so I can proceed.
Thanks!

I don't recall UTR, it was over 10 years ago I last played those missions! I do know that while some of the missions could be quite hard, they were all winnable in the end. However, some of them I spent MANY attempts to crack.

The Jedi Master I found this... http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?t=199365http://www.crs-morningstar.net/tacop.php?id=52I guess I do not understand the capabilities of capital ships and I need to give commands to my wingman. I kept the turrets in fixed forward firing position, evidently there is some AI capability to them. I thought the droid was the gunner and the guns would not work if I dropped him off to rescue the uncle. Gonna try again tonight. Thanks!

Thanks! UT, it's been forever for me as well, If I recall on some of the freighter missions you can lock your weapons forward and fight like that.

UT, it's been forever for me as well,
I spent entirely too much time playing SW Galaxies. Not only did I miss this but, I also never played KoToR!

I spent entirely too much time playing SW Galaxies. Not only did I miss this but, I also never played KoToR! Ha! Me too, brother! I kinda got addicted to SWG, and lost a relationship to it. No worries, she was an evil woman anyway, lol! A few months ago I spent a looooooong time installing and upgrading XWA using all the files and instructions on the XWA Upgrade website. But I've been too busy to really sit down and play it since the first night. But at least it's still there when I can come back to it.

That was probably the lowest point in my relationship with my wife. The early days of SWG went something like this for me... Wake up at 5am, log in to game, check mail, vendors. Get to work by 6. Work until 3. Get home, log in, play until 2am. Sleep. Repeat. Everyday. I would eat dinner at my PC, never hang out w/ my wife. Chores were knocked out in the most expedient fashion. I was so addicted I did not notice that a rift was growing between us. I had only been married for a year and a half. We were friends and dated for several years before hand so she knew I was a serious gamer but, not like that. We just moved out to Cali at the time and did not know anyone so, my wife sat alone while I played and she was getting pissed. Thank god I finally snapped out of it! I still played but, I put it on the back burner. That was made a LOT easier by the changes that ruined the game for me. God help us when The Old Republic comes out LOL

I have tried changing the compatibility to xp service pac 1 still no joy.... Hmm...I haven't tried installing XWA on my 64-bit Win7 but I would have tried the exact same steps you did. Have you tried looking over at the X-Wing Alliance forums: http://www.xwingalliance.net/ ? I'm sure someone has run into (and solved) your problem there. EP

What would be really badass is if someone modded the game so the ships went their real speeds. As it stands, 100 MGLT is only... 100 meters per second... i.e. 223 Miles per Hour. I'd love to see these ships really go 63000 miles per hour (i.e. zipping by Star Destroyers) etc.--of course, the lasers would have to be modded to go much faster too! It'd be awesome to try and play it like that to say the least.
Of course, they'd also have to mod in G-Forces... Turn too sharply while going too fast and... *splat*

At those speeds you'd never hit anything! Well, aside from perhaps collisions being more frequent...

Not X-Wing Alliance but the hardest missions I ever played were in Tie Fighter where I was piloting a tie bomber and waves of A-wings would come after me firing advanced concussion missiles. Some of those missions I must have replayed like 10 times before I won it.

UTR, the trick to flyin' the transports is to switch the Cannons to "Gunner AI" during a dogfight. First, you wanna "Target Nearest Starfighter" ("R") and then quickly switch to "Gunner AI" ("F") and fly evasively. Let the "Gunner AI" do all the work. Also, configure your power settings so that your Engines get maximum output by adjusting your "Cannon Recharge Rate" ("F9") to minimum (this doesn't effect the "Gunner AI"), but keep your "Shield Recharge Rate" ("F10") at normal ("Maintenance") to keep your Shields up. Remember to throttle down to ~1/3 to get the best turn rate possible as throttle settings directly affect your turn rate, but don't forget to throttle back up when your not flyin' evasively. Remember, you need to repeat the sequence for each target, so once your current target is destroyed tap "R" and "F" for every target 'til they're all destroyed or until you've accomplished your mission goals. Rinse and repeat.
I'll try to get a video up that demonstrates the above so you can see it in action...

Some of those missions I must have replayed like 10 times before I won it. I certainly remember getting hung up at points but, none of the earlier games have frustrated me like this one. I still consider Tie Fighter one of the all time best games I ever played. Thanks Brennus. You must be right. My space dog fighting skills are not carrying me through this one. I am also not at the top of my game. I need a little help from my AI friends. Out of curiosity, it is ok to drop the droid off and then comeback or am I dooming myself to failure if I do not remained docked?
