Iranian Embassy siege hero John McAleese dies on Greek holiday

THE Scots SAS hero who led the storming of the Iranian embassy has died on holiday in Greece.

John "Mac" McAleese, who was 61, took charge of the elite squad who blew out the besieged building's windows as millions watched on TV.

The SAS killed five of the six hostage-takers and freed their 19 captives.

The 1980 swoop made them national heroes and sealed their regiment's reputation as the world's finest anti-terror force.

John, of Laurieston, Stirlingshire, died suddenly on Friday. The cause was not revealed.

The Foreign Office are helping relatives bring his body home.

An FCO spokesman said: "We are providing assistance to his next of kin at this difficult time."

John spent 23 years as a soldier, 16 of them in the SAS.

After leaving, he worked as a security consultant in Iraq and Afghanistan and hosted the 2003 BBC series SAS: Are You Tough Enough?

He died almost two years to the day after his soldier son Paul, 29, was killed by a bomb in Afghanistan.

Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,
Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;
Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra md,
Dros ryddid collasant eu gwaed.
Gwlad, gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad.
Tra mr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i'r hen iaith barhau.

It doesn't take a great leap of imagination to see that he was the inspiration for Clancy's Eddie Price, and for John Price in the CoD series. Can't beat a good moustache.

RIP John, thanks for interupting True Grit on telly with a newsflash featuring balaclavas and explosions and stuff when I was a kid.

RIP! frown

He also worked with the developers of Konami's - highly underrated - tactical shooter "The Regiment", as an advisors and voice actor, as well as telling background stories in video interviews featured in the game.
