On the set-up screen for UP3 you are given a slider for memory assignment and there is another check box for 4 GB something or other.
Questions: - What do these settings mean/do? - I have 8 gigs of ram yet I can only set the slider to 1 gig max. Why is that? - What settings do folks use w/ a rig similar to mine?
Thanks all in advance.

I am wondering this too. Would there be any reason NOT to slide it all the way to the right and use the max? Sim won't start past about 1.5 gig for me.

Most players seem to have better results with a lower RAM setting. Try 512. That seems to be the sweet spot for many.

Aviar Yes, that is what one of the posters from the UP forum told me - and use 4Gig Address (something or other) if you have 64bit and a lot of RAM. Which I do have. Sim runs smooth as silk - avg FPS of 72 using The Black Death track.

Is the memory assignment for the full game or maybe buffer space? If buffer then leave some for game and OS!
Dunno but 512 works fine for me.

As I recall, it has to do with the amount of memory the game is allowed to utilize. Originally, it (IL2) was coded to use something very small because nobody had tons of ram like we have now. The slider allows it to use more memory (necessary with some of the larger maps and hi res stuff). You have to find the sweet spot for your system. If it's too much, it'll crash or refuse to load. If it's too little it'll crash in game because of the texture sizes, I think. Hope that helps.

So, does this not have any real effect? Or does it change the Java code to allow for more memory usage?

Why not checking at UP or SAS site?
... here a short explanation from Slink, in SAS forum:
"It doesn't actually matter how much RAM you have, 2, 4, 8 gigs, the old java engine can only create this little box for the game to run inside with it's fixed memory size, and it's the memory inside this box that the selector controls, not your windows memory"
I searched high and low and did not find an explanation. Thanks for that!

The Philippines and KTO maps can be quite large for some players.
