Hi the post about Artemis sim made me tought about other capital space chip sims out there, not the typical ones that let you control a star fighter but something more in the line of Artemis but single player of course. Anyone know a good one?

The last one I played was Klingon Academy which came out in 2000 but it is an outstanding capital ship space sim. It came with a huge manual that explained in detail all of the ship systems and how to manage your energy. I've heard good things about Star Trek Bridge Commander but I never got around to playing it.

What about Star Shatter? I played that and it was pretty decent, in a low-budget indie kind of way. I just flew the fighters though.

The last time I played Starshatter it was pretty poor as far as capital ship combat went. This was partly because they had no defence against fighter missiles.

I need to find that info on Artemis, I must've missed that.

First person, not sure about much. However as an "up close and personal" RTS, not like Sins of a Solar Empire where you get lost in the size and scope, there's Nexus: the Jupiter Incident, which is about capital ships, launching your fighters, marines in a shuttle launching to take over a base or ship...good stuff. Long battles with shields to take out, sub-systems, hull etc. It's a pretty different style of game and very good. Tactics and set up, no resource gathering.

The other day I picked up Homeworld 2 and it's got some larger ships down the line I think. I know it's got carriers. Even more RTS style than Nexus though.

Star Wars Empire at War (Gold), another RTS, fairly simplified, but some VERY fun battles and a cinematic mode so you can enjoy the action you set in motion. Also some ground action, but mainly it's ship battles.

X3:TC eventually gets to the larger ships, but I've never gotten far enough. LOL

I second Nexus. I just re-installed it and I think I never finished it, since I got a new PC back then and never re-installed it. IIRC you had to equip your ships with weapons, shields and stuff to get the job done, missions weren`t easy either and the battles long. This is written from memory, as I only installed it a checked if it is working, but I remember it was a really good game.

Klingon Academy is the best I've ever played. There's Starfleet Command and Battlecruiser but neither of these come close to the awesomeness that KA is. Oh, even better, a fan-made patch was released that allows it to run on modern operating systems and graphics cards recently also:

With this, you really have no excuse to not play it. Get Klingon Academy asap. It really was that good back when it first came out.

I've enjoyed Nexus, and looking forward to the sequel if it gets off the ground. It's not perfect, but I like this type of game that isn't just about building massive groups to go attack. Pretty much all tactics.

Wish I could find Star Trek Bridge Commander for a reasonable price. It's $100+ pretty much everywhere.

Seen that Starfleet command have tons of mods hope they have some that change the fleets as I don't like Start trek universe ship looks. But the game that seems more interesting is Nexus the Jupiter incident, a sequel was just anounced so If I like the original maybe I will have a new one to play soon. biggrin
thanks!

Nexus is a great library addition just for being so different. Smaller scale, personal management, big ships. You can go with a lot of automation or you can micro-manage. The first time you take out another ship's flak canons so you can launch the fighters at it is a blast. Or send in the Marines to take over a base--they stay in radio contact so you hear what's going on. I can see why there's a BSG mod for it, it's well suited for that. Most ships can have fighters and shuttles for spec ops or something. Nice controls.
I do wish there was more to the navigation, you're stuck with objects and nav points they give you, but the game is all about the scene you're playing out, not exploration or production.

BTW, it even runs well on a netbook. For widescreen gaming, you need to make a quick change in the registry you need to look up on widescreengaming.com. Nothing to it though.
