I picked up a free Intel i7 930 2.80 Ghz chip from my father in-law who went to the new AMD chips. I'm currently running an Intel i7 920 (Stock at 2.66Ghz) overclocked to 3.5Ghz on air. Would it be worth my time to pull the motherboard and heatsink out of my case, install this new chip and try a higher overclock? Or should I just sell it for him?

Only difference between it and your current proc is the multiplier. I guess you are saying your case does not have a cutout so you can't get to the back of the mobo where the CPU heatsink attaches?

Not worth it then unless you think it's worth all that time to see little if any increase in speed. Generally the lower spec procs will OC higher, but higher multipliers are better too since it gives you a bit more leeway when OC. Also generally a later manufactured CPU will sometimes OC better or worse.

I would OC the crap out of the one you have and if it should smoke, then you have a spare. I figure that chip should run close to 4Ghz easy.

speedbump -
I love the Storm Scout cases - I have two machines in these. Easy to haul around to a LAN party, and good looking to boot. I did get two *quiet* fans for the side vents on each machine in addition to the front, back, and top fans. Newegg has them on E-Blast sale today for $60 and free shipping - was tempted to get another one even though I don't need it.

Good advice, above.

I got mine on the Cyber Monday sale for 59 bucks so 60 is a steal. I could only fit one 120mm fan in the lower part of the side vent since the Xigmatek cooler with two fans comes within about a half inch of the side vent.

And it has that beautiful huge cutout to get to the back of the motherboard too!

You could sell the 930 to me. How much are you asking?

Well, I'm not really sure! I've also got 6GB (6 sticks of 1GB) of Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR3 Triple Channel mem at 1333 (PC3 10600) just laying around... If you're Interested in both I might be willing to part ways for a fair price? biggrin Otherwise I think I'll keep it as a backup chip.

Not much reason to keep that IMO, drop it on Amazon or Ebay or something. By the time you might need a new cpu there will be something newer and better, probably for less money than you could sell that for now. If it's worth what I'm thinking. Get something you could use better than a paperweight in the closet. wink These things don't hold value forever.
