I wish I knew that you had to pre-order the deluxe edition to get in on the beta. But it's only a couple of weeks until the game comes out so I should be ok.

I would've went out and bought the DDE if they kept true to their routes (IMO). Now I am skeptical about paying $27 for the normal version. Such a shame.

considering the forces they're contending with, i'm surprised they're making this game as detailed and realistic as it is.

it could be worse you know. like 60 dollars for a call of duty rehash.

I expect RO3 (if there is one) to be a BF/CoD clone.

Beta's out on steam. You might have to restart steam if you have it running.

I wish WWII Online had these sounds.

Played for about 30 minutes. New cover system is nice, but imho the gameplay is a little to fast for a game striving for realism.
Serverbrowser is pretty dodgy and tends to crash the game (my tip: wait until it´s fully loaded and leave the hands of the mouse while it´s loading!)

From watching the videos that seemed to be the case. Everything looks too fast, from pulling a new mag/clip out of a pouch, to switching weapons, to raising a weapon to blind fire ect.

Well, judging from the 100 people that still play the first one online at any given time this game went in the right direction, don't judge it by the videos. This game feels very realistic, the weapon handling is spot on, all the while it throws you enough action and does the RIGHT things "gamey". Basically everything that I hated (and I'm sure others did as well) with the first one, is fixed, but it is still brutally realistic in all the right ways. I no longer feel like I don't have control of my character, actions don't feel like I'm stuck in an animation.

I absolutely love it.

Thought I was having deja vu then shadylurker but I had just read your post on the Tripwire forums smile

I still don't know whether I have played on a full realistic server yet as they claim it is but there are still huge names above the players.

I played it for an hour last night and I agree with shadylurker. It doesn't feel as fast as it looks in the videos, the pace of the game is excellent in my opinion. I tried both sides bolt action rifles and SMGs and really enjoyed the way the handled. The frist person cover system works well and the game just feels much more polished on the whole (as far as gameplay, I had the same server browser crashes many were experiencing).

I didn't get to spend enough time with it to form a complete opinion but in the time I did spend with it I really, really liked it.

Yeah, I agree about the speed but some of the games were only lasting a few minutes especially the one where one side has to take a building and hold and the other has to take it over as the timer was very short.

Graphics are great and runs well for me and I have only crashed in the server browser. Weapons I agree feel nice but I don't like the 'pressure wave' effect from grenades as it looks cheap. All-in-all I like it too.

I think it's a huge improvement over the first one. I hope it brings TWI some success.

I didn't realize it but those guys are pretty much just up the street from me. Game development in the Atlanta area is picking up steam with them, CCP and the team that makes Global Agenda all being in the area.

so...you guys are able to play... ?

Attempt 1... once i got into the MP screen the mouse wouldn't move, jumping all over.

Attempt 2... quick join said nothing available but then tried to connect to a server...for 15 mins.

Attempt 3... program not responding.

will reboot and try a couple more things... but so far can't get in game myself.

I had quite a few crashes in the server browser but once I got into a game it ran fine for the most part. I expected higher FPS than I'm getting so hopefully one of the things they are doing over the next few weeks is optimizing.

One trick someone mentioned is to join the RO2 group on steam then join someone's game from the member list there to get around the server browser crash.

Yeah server browser needs some serious work (tabbing and using arrow keys maybe temp solution). Right now there are only two maps on rotation in official servers...to me game feels a little raw/undercooked.

There is something nagging in the back of my head about RO2. I don't know what it is at the moment but I am not bowled over by it nor do I out-right hate it. I have just played RO1 again and still prefer it over 2 though...

Kill cams, odd grenade throwing mechanics, quirky bandaging feature that adds nothing to gameplay, everything just seems wrong. I'll likely end up getting it anyways but it truly looks like a poor sequel. Much more of a BF type game.

Though to be honest, even $32 on Steam seems very expensive for what it is IMO. Crysis 2 disappointed me but RO2 seems to be the most disappointing game since I saw the new Ace Combat trailer. Not a good year for games!

Make sure you have the latest DX redistributable (I believe it is located in the game folder) installed. Yoshiro (I think his name is?) from Tripwire metnioned it in their forums.

Hope this helps!

With regards to the game, I am loving it so far. Pace seems perfect, the graphics are nice, and the performance at max settings is solid. Much better than the original RO, IMO. I wish ArmA2 felt less "clunky" movement wise and more like this game.

haha yea, I have been very surprised by this game. I only really bought it because I love Trip Wire and how they interact with the community, I had to let them know someone likes the game, reading the steam forums its like a terrible scene from a murder. I only played the first one to scratch that itch and always left dissapointed. I mean I like realism but the first one was a little over the top. For example when I decide to lay down in the first one it felt like a process now I get fired at my guy dives and it feels fluid. I guess my complaint is I cant stand games where my brain and hands are 5 steps ahead of what the game is doing.

This is exactly why as much as I like the concept of ArmA I can't stand the game.

What's all the hype about how realistic this is? How is it different than any other shooter, you've all played? I thought that I was going to want this, but the more I'm seeing...I just don't know. Gameplay looks no different than CoD, MoH or the Battlefield series.
I'm still more impressed by the screens and videos of BF3, than anything else I've seen so far. Trying to keep an open mind, though. Can anyone join in on the Beta?

It's far different than BF or CoD, the pace is slower and the weapons feel much more realistic compared to those, suppression and stress mechanic is also done pretty well.

Honestly, there is nothing whatsoever realistic about going into the same, unchanged combat area for the 100th time, knowing the enemy side's composition and that he has to take the same objective for the umpteenth time. All shooters are arena shooters in that respect and RO2 is no different than RO1 or other "realism" shooters in that.

You have to preorder the deluxe edition of the game for beta access.

Hardly. There are many realism based changes that would have been welcome to RO1. There is always the BF series if realism is not your thing (and I did like BFBC2).

So LOMAC, IL-2, and Falcon 4 are not realistic flight sims either then? wink I've played on the same (unchanged) maps in both LOMAC and IL-2 many times.

If it's a multiplayer air quake arena then no, the combat isn't realistic even if the systems management is.

Edit: No to say that isn't fun, it is.

I personally like this one better than the original, it feels more real and it has the ability to make me fear for my virtual life much more in some modes as you can spend a lot of time watching your team while you wait to respawn. All in all, I like it, I can't wait to be able to play the other modes including Single player. If you already have the first you get 20% off so also another reason to get it.

Crazy Video Game moment:

I was in a tank driving it, letting the AI shoot, BAM, BAM, 2 pings from different sides. Blood starts squirting all over me, "Oh no I'm hit, game over" I said. 3 seconds later I'm still alive, I turn around to see both men in the turret slumped over, the gunner directly behind me got his legs blown off. Blood was coming from his stumps......pretty crazy game.

RO2's infantry is exactly what I wanted in RO1. It even has me wondering how awesome Arma2 would be if it had RO2's infantry modeling.

Any how, RO2 still has a few problems, but I have no doubt the developers and the modding community will take care of them. We can't say the same thing about BF3 or the other no dedicated servers or SDK games on the market.

I would have to give the beta a 7 out of 10. I scored Arma2 at 4 out of 10.

I played the beta yesterday night until the wee morning hours, had a great time. Best experience was on the 'Fallen Heroes' map on a hardcore server with no killcam, no kill notifications etc... that one really teaches you the importance of cover, crawling, and suppressive fire. Saw one guy running towards the objective a dozen times, getting killed by unseen enemies every single time. When I asked him "Jeeze, what do you think you're doing? ^^" He answered "Honestly, I have no idea mate ^^".

I formed a squad with him and two other guys and we single-handedly took and held an objective and held the right flank for the rest of the game, with several dozen kills among us.

For many FPS players infantry combat means running and jumping around the map, gunning down baddies from the hip.

Thank god RO is different.

I was pretty much cleaning house on the maps I played yesterday. I love that that you can actually hit people past 10m with a SMG.

The MP40 feels a lot like the real life version I've fired.

Oh lord don't post that on the steam forums, they are crying about getting killed by SMG's. I personally think the games infantry is perfect, I just hope none of these whiny kids that don't know what a FPS is ruins it. Game takes me back to the original DOD days, and this game as it plays right now is how I always wanted Day of defeat and RO1 to play.

Rule number one of RO2:
Team work.

that's how all FPS should be but sadly that has gone away. I like this game a lot.

Well here's the thing, I went to the range and expected the MP40 to hit nothing because I'd played a lot of RO1 in the day. Surprised when I got very decent groupings at 50m. Glad this game corrects that issue.

Bolt action rifles in urban combat are just painful to use, Stalingrad environment clearly illustrates that.

IMO the problem is that most firefights in RO2 are still at a rather short distances, rarely more than 100m. And SMGs, despite their reputation, are actually quite decent weapons within that range.

People are so used to the extreme close-range fights of modern shooters where engagement ranges are usually just a couple of dozen meters that even 100m in RO seem like "ohmygawd he sniped me with that MP40 from ALL across the map!!!"

That will be solved when the mapping community gets a hold of the SDK.

Now for some random images.

That's the death screen.. he's waiting to respawn so it's giving you info. All that stuff can be regulated server-side too. ADMIN REMOVED (particularly on a server with more realism functions).

Here you can see what the in-game screens look like:

A patch has also been released which fixes many of the issues with crashes (not all - it IS a Beta after all).

FozzyBear amusingly enough I may have been playing in that game! PFC Veld [29th] is part of my realism unit in Darkest Hour (an uber realism mod for RO1 that depicts the Western Front with American, British and Canadian forces). See: Darkest Hour The Game

A lot of the 29th are dismayed with the Call of Doodying of the game.. but we've been spoiled by the realism that DH gives us! Once the full game is released and our brilliant modders sink their teeth into it then I predict a bright realism future indeed!

It's probably one of the best investments you will make. Not only does the game come with a UDK, but years of support from TWI, a large community and some really awesome mods in the works. It's basically a game that keeps on giving.

That is the only problem with steam release... dealing with the patch delays as steam rechecks them for major problems. So annoying knowing that the patch came out Friday night but here it is Sunday afternoon and it has not made it through steam verification.

this will probably be my last game purchase for the next 2 years, seriously. i cannot imagine ever getting tired of this, especially with continued support, new vehicles, maps and mods. the level of interactivity with the environment and weapons mechanics is astonishing. I've been playing close to 20 hours, trying to do every allowable action for this game and I'm still discovering new things. a perfect balance of realism, innovation, and proven gameplay mechanics.

ADMIN EDIT:
you did good until the last unnecessary comment... it's OK not to like a game or series, but a constant knock when it has no purpose in this thread won't be tolerated.

I like the new maps...shows the expanse of the game to newcomers. The first maps were somewhat large, but the new ones bring it to a whole new level. I also can't get enough of the sound in this game. The echoes from being inside are amazing. Anyone request a TS room if anyone cared to get together at some point?

All of the updates to RO1 made the game last so long. The new vehicles, maps, ect.

Hopefully RO2 will be similar. I want to try making maps, but I'll see if I get the time...

In RO2 related news, "relaxed realism" is now referred to as "standard". I am going to guess most of the new players will stick with standard thinking it is the main game mode (perhaps it is...). They will probably view realism as the "hardcore" modes of BFBC2 and CoD. There is a sticky on their forums regarding the differences between the two modes.

If so, it don't help you and FozzyBears constant argument on how great RO2 is compared to everything else. lol

i doubt it. ro 2 is actually more realistic than ro 1(which was never that realistic t begin with), if the trend continues ro3 will be an improvement overall.

Downloading the beta now.

For those of you with the standard version, you can get the beta for free here:

People are very quick at snatching the keys. Good luck to those that try!

I have an extra RO2 Beta key if anyone wants it.

To make it more fun, and to keep any of those 'Super Mario Does WWII' players away smile please reply in this thread with the answer to this Red Orchestra: Osfront 41-45 related question:

'Name the German side-arm issued to Panzer crew members'

Easy eh? First come, first served. Good luck!

Flogger, if you already have the beta I can't give you another key - stop entering the competition smile

I was online about 10 mins ago - and I think your steps look fine. Are you fully updated in Steam, as there was a version bump which is why you might not see servers?

One of those guns is correct, if someone else wants to reply to win..

Sorry, I misread your post. :p

I still can't find a fix. But I can right click on a friend and join there game. So I did get some play time.

Some screen shots and a vid on the highest settings. I get low frame rates and constant stutters at 1680x1050. Some maps I get 8 or so frame rates. I have a GTX 260, 4GB RAM, and an AMD 965. The vid/screens:

Flogger, from looking at your video I have a few suggestions ...

- My video card is similar to yours but I’m getting good framerates. What I’ve done is turn everything to Ultra at 1920*1080 but turned off bloom and blur (who would ever want that? screwy), shadows to medium, post processing to low (post processing usually means more blur anyway) and antialiasing to FXAA Low (I find that the more FXAA you have, the blurrier it gets as well).

- I think you might have the “Disable sprint key zoom” box in the gameplay settings checked because I notice that you’re not zooming in at all while you're looking around or while looking down your sights.

- Don’t forget to use your Tactical Display (I think the default is T) to quickly check what the objective is and to know where the squad leader is and what his orders are.

- Don’t forget to check your Overhead Map for stuff like your team’s movements.

This definitely ain’t your typical lone wolf run and gunner and it may not seem that fun when you first start but once you learn the ropes, it gets good ... real good.

I'll try changing some of the settings. I hope the final game runs better. I know there are a lot of ballistics in the game (adds CPU stress)but UE3 should scale down very well. Certain areas of maps just kill my frame rates to. It seems like they have a lot of work left to do to get the game optimized well.

I also disabled zoom to DH levels. I can't stand the variable zoom. However, this makes it impossible for me to kill anyone as they can spot me from distances where they are not even visible on my monitor. So I will have to change it back.

Otherwise I do not like the gameplay too much. Far too many SMGs and semi autos. Not enough Mosins or Mausers. The movement is far too fast, and you can sprint really long distances. This unnecessarily speeds up things. There is also not enough weapon sway, tanks recoil far too much, and the bandaging system is pointless.

I'm working on a few custom RO2 splash screens. I just thought I'd let you guys all know you can make your own by going to the root folder here:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\redorchestra2beta\Engine\Splash\PC

Original RO2 Splash .BMP

Custom (WIP)
