I find very difficult to play this scen from USA side, only 4 F-15īs a pair of Orions and a DDG are quickly attacked and burned by lots of planes that seem to come from coastal Venezuela air bases. I set the DDG to Puerto La Cruz and launch a P3 and then F-15īs to attack enemy planes flying near my ship, but they are quickly shot down. Any ideas ??

Question about the AI: How come the are so generous with their emitting radar? This becomes especially clear in the dawn patrol scenario where it seems almost to easy(note seems, im not saying it is..). This time, MartinB and HermanH have switched sides and both made video recordings of the battle. Viewers can watch both sides of the same battle and see what the respective commanders were thinking at the same point in time during the action. Hope to see Martin's matching video soon. Normally, we would just use ANW's VCR function. Unfortunately, it currently results in a Crash to Desktop.

I am a returning Harpoon player, but this is my first time out with H3/ANW/HUE.
I am working of the 2nd scenario in the classics GUIK set.
I am encountering the following puzzling behaviour:
1) I attempt to ready one of the Lynx choppers with ASuW missiles. It reports that it will take 6 hours (is this really how long it takes to swap out a weapons loadout - I don't know I am just asking). Anyway, I tells me it will take 6 hours. BUt it still lists both Lynx choppers with 2 torpedoes loaded. At some point after some hours, if I check on the Lynx again, it still shows them both as having 2 torpedoes loaded. There is no indication in the game that tells me which chopper is being reloaded (I noticed the same sort of hevaviour with other mounts in the game and with torpedo tubes). BUT the problem is that at the end of the reload period, both Lynx still show 2 torpedoes. And there is often an erratic ready time that vassilates between 5-8 and 20 some minutes.
What counter-manded my order to load the ASuW missiles on the lynx? How do I prevent that? Can't I have one Lynx with torpedos as a back up sub-hunter and have the other as a ship hunter? I do have the frigate tasked with ASW duty with a task for the Lynx. Is this what is doing it to me? Is it re-tasking both Lynx for the ASW task in the formation editor? Is there not a way to tell the sim that I want to reserve one chopper for other duties? What kind of feedback in the interface is there?
2) Sometimes one of the choppers which I have taken direct control of to go do some over-the horizon sniffing, suddenly clears its flight orders and heads for home. It is not BINGO fuel, it has weapons and sonobouys on board so it is not an "auto-return for fuel or rearm", so why does it take off like that?
3) WIth regards to #2, I have also had ships suddenly all clear the manuallu set way points and all head off in some other direction. What is causing that? I have turned the Staff handles navigation off, but this still happens.
4) Sometimes a ship will just sit and do nothing. I have watched one try to follow the course I set and then flicker between 0 kts and flank kts (the display is flickering as the number change so fast) but it goes no where and it is a devil to get it out of this behaviour.
5) Why do have have to keep re-selected a helo when I want to drop a sonobuoy? I drop one, the helo remains the selected unit and some time later I want to drop another one and it won't do it unless I re-click on the helo to "emphasize" the fact that it is selected. THen the buoys drop fine.
6) If I have data links on, and I have a surface ship locked up on my helo's radar and I select the FFG that launched the helo and target the ship that is on the helo's RADAR, why don't the Harpoon missles track to the ship correctly? Why do they fly off in extremely wrong directions and hit allied ships that are on the port and starboard rear quarters when the targeted ship is off the port bow? The ships that are hit should not even come into the target acquisition cone of the harpoons being fired, correct?
Thanks in advance for the assist.

I have recently bought Harpoon UE. I am trying to work out the best version to play (if at all; with Naval War: Arctic Circle out maybe Harpoon has been usurped? or is Naval War not as 'deep' as Harpoon? what about GCB?). Anyway at first sight, the number of versions of Harpoon is confusing, What should someone start out with (as of April 2012)? HUE, I have read, has 240 anomalies, ANW slightly less, and 363 is the most reliable, correct ? Does that mean 363 is bug free, or does it also have 60 or so anomalies ? (363 does not have a screen resolution that suits my Widescreen laptop, nor can I get the ini installer to install ..(it cannot register 2 files)) So for a novice, like myself, is it going to make a lot of difference if I just use HUE ? With the complete PlayersDB are the anomalies in HUE a) resolved or at least b) tolerable ? In other words which is the best Harpoon version considering I am using PlayersDB ? (considering i am a novice)
Lastly, manually editing the ini for 363, do I point the Battleset folder to BattleSet or Battlset (with Player'sDB installed)? Where can I get info about what goes on in the ini with regards PlayersDB ?

I am unable to get a database to open. I can't find H3CD.
The H3RE gives me a run time error after pressing one of the "buttons"
DB portion of the scenario editor seems to not be working. I use the drop down and I can get a long bullet button list of equipment, but there are no other buttons in the window. I then have to close the program and start it over.

OK, here's a request. You may already have done this in a video, but I think there's a Harpoon scenario ("Return to the Kola Peninsula"??) about a nuclear strike on the Kola Peninsula by B-52s and A-6s. Sort of end of the world, but I'd really like to see this scenario run by somebody who knows what he's doing

I have a question... which one would you recommend for a beginner - ANW or CE? I know that you mainly post AAR from ANW and you've done all the tutorials for it. But after watching some vids (at the moment I'am following Thanh Hoa bridge) I think that CE is a bit easier to grasp. But then again I may be mistaken:)
And could you also recommend any good book or maybe a web page about naval operations? My knowledge is very basic so it would not hurt to read about it. Thanks again for your work!
It is generally accepted that HCE is more user-friendly than H3/ANW/HUE. It is based more on a windows than H3 so it is often more familiar for new players. Some commands are easier to employ in HCE than in H3, but H3 gives overall more player control.
It is true that most of the AARs on the channel are for H3, but there is help available for HCE and even non-Harpoon games. We help all who ask. If you need help with HCE, there are some videos already available and we can make more as requested along with HCE AARs.
We deliberately made the Thanh Hoa bridge AAR so that new users could compare the game-play between HCE and H3 versions. In fact, there are many HCE scenarios that were re-made for H3. So, a player can try an HCE scenario, then re-try it in H3, then ANW, and, finally, HUE. This allows him to find the version he enjoys most.
There is a nice little manual from Amazon, but I don't know if they have any more copies. Harpoon II: The Official Strategy Guide by Ed Dille and Tom Basham
Harpoon Battlebook: The Official Strategies & Tactics Guide by James Degoey published in 1991
Much of them are covered in the Harpoon3 v3.6.3 manual already included with the game so you don't have to pay for more.
I've done today couple of tutorials in ANW and have another question... I bought HUE some time ago. I know that it includes previous versions of Harpoon 3 - 3.6.3 and 3.9.4. Should I focus on one of them or the latest one (3.10.1.0) is the best? I noticed lot's of your AARs are from previous versions.
Apologize for all those questions but I didn't follow the development process of the game and I'am just wondering if there are big differences between them. One thing I did notice today is that in the latest version of the game some UI options are missing (in Submarine Operations tutorial I couldn't set the depth to "deep" or "very deep" but noticed that you could running the older installment). Felt a bit strange to me that it was removed but maybe there is some reason for that.
The focus of HfD was on the H3 v3.6.3 version of the game because it had the least number of problems and would act most closely with what was written in the manuals. The only time ANW or HUE was used was when there was no alternative. This is also how I play the game; avoid ANW/HUE whenever possible.
My suggestion is to take any of the scenarios. Some were even originally written in HCE version. Then play it in HCE (if possible) or H3, play it again in ANW, and then, finally, in HUE. You will probably see significant differences between each version. This way, you can determine the best game version for your tastes. Not everyone agrees that H3 is the best version, but many who conduct this little experiment do. IMO, you will find the AI in H3 to be the most aggressive with the fewest aggravating problems such as monstrous Uncertainty Zones.
The anomaly you mention regarding the Submarine tutorial is just a different way the game operates and is not a bug. In the original H3 version, submarines always had every depth offered with the speed/depth menu even if the water depth at that point on the map did not support Deep or VDeep depth. You could still select the Deep/VDeep radio buttons, but the sub would only dive to maximum depth possible at that geographic point. Later versions of the game simply did offer the lower depths if the map depth did not support it.
Ok, I get it now. I noticed how your tutorial gameplay differed from mine and that was because of the version of the game. I will start with some small scenarios using the 3.6.3 then and move my way up so to speak. Thank you again for your feedback. Hopefully I'll be fine from now on.

This AAR is an experiment with "giganto-scenario" play, but ANW isn't the best iteration to do that, as events will show. Dealing with triple threat axes can be a bit confusing over a large area.

I have installed the last version of the PlayersDB for ANW, HUE and H3-363 without problem. I have installed also the file with the "ANW and HUE images" ... the installed worked fine but I have a doubt: - the installer put these images under the directory DATABASES/PLAYERSDB/PICS but normally the images are under the directory RESOURCES/DBPICS so my question is simple ... I have to move the images under this directory or they are found also under where the installer put them?
