If your budget is $500 don't even think about an inkjet. Looking on Newegg you can get a good color laser all in one in the $4-500 range. If you're fine with just B&W you should be able to get something for under $250.

The printer you linked is an "Officejet" which is an inkjet printer. HP's Laserjet series are laser printers.

Compared to laser printers, inkjets are a huge ripoff on the cost of ink. For example HP estimates that the black cartridge on that Officejet is good for 1000 pages and it goes for $30. On my Brother b&w laser printer, I can get a high yield toner cartridge for $65 that's good for 7000 pages.

More pages per cartridge and lower price per page.

We have an inexpensive Samsung Laser -- got it for just a bit more than the price of the toner cartridge. We also have an expensive "archival quality" inkjet color printer. Both for a long time now. Both work great -- been through a a couple refills of ink (we buy top quality ink) and laser toner refills (we buy refilled toner -- WAY cheaper than ink).

Not an expert, though. So, my comment is: If you are purchasing a printer for your own "non mission critical" use and are only printing an average of dozens of pages a day, you don't need to spend much. Something like this could work -- at least, it did for us.

Samsung ML Series Printer 1200x1200 dots per inch

12000 pages a month and suitable for small business they say. We don't work ours that hard -- but, we have no issues with it -- works great.

NOTE: Ours is "wired" not WiFi. Some folks report they would prefer "wired". The linked printer is WiFi enabled.

Not strongly recommending this particular one as we don't own this particular model (we have a slightly cheaper Samsung ML2510 we got for about $70 on sale). Still it is indicative of something that might save you a bundle. So cheap that if you find you need a better printer, you could afford to buy a second printer smile There are other Samsungs in the same price range.

Just a thought.

Here is the "wired" USB (no WiFi) version Samsung ML2525 for $58 with free shipping.

Some folks complain about toner costs. The printer with toner can be cheaper than a Samsung toner cartridge. Some folks simply buy a new printer when they run out of toner (we buy refilled toner cartridges). BTW, I buy a new watch every time the battery goes dead in the old one smile Anyhow, the toner that comes with the printer is often a "downsized" version with less toner in it.

Same here, Got brother laser printers all over the place, we order our toners from staples, and we get return credit for returning empty cartridges to brother, same for drums.
