FFG (fantasy flight games) is releasing X-Wing in 2012. It is described as "tactical space combat" in the SW universe. Depending on the game mechanics it could be a good game!

Man, what I wouldn't give to see a re-make of the original X-Wing computer game (sim?) by LucasArts and Larry Holland. I remember playing that in college and not believing what I was getting for 40 bucks. It was a rebel pilot wannabe's dream-come-true.

If you have played the boardgame "Wings of War"; this will play like it.
cool! I know of WoW, but I have never played the game.
Is WoW a detailed game with good flight mechanics? Or is it more of a jump in and do anything you want type of game? I ask because I am hoping that since FFG is billing this game as "tactical" it will have some detail to the mechanics or if it is simiplified that it will still adhere to how we see the ships in SW fly around.
OT, you have a cake next to your name! Happy Birthday!!!

So uh..how many people out there do you think still play boardgames?
I'm sorry but if it's a combat game that involves number crunching, tons of little plastic and cardboard counters and dice rolling then I'll just play the computer version.

Boardgames and wargames have evolved a lot in the past two decades, just like videogames. You still have the dice rolling, but there is really no number crunching anymore.
Besides, one thing you have with boardgames which is more difficult to obtain with videogames is to have a bunch of friends over for Sunday afternoon, playing together around the kitchen table while having beer and chips.

FT
You can get all of that same social interaction by having a local LAN gaming session. I know, I used to do that all the time.
I do have fond memories from my jr. high and high school days of playing Axis & Allies with my friends until the wee hours of the morning though.
You draw cards which dictates how you can move, and each turn you place X number of cards down as your move (as does your opponent), and if you can fire you shoot at him.

Board games are great way to test mechanics of real-time video games without wasting resources to make prototype code.
There was another Star Wars figure board game which used plasti-card fighters and cap ships. I have a whole box of them somewhere.
The Holland XWing game was outstanding as the mission maps were more puzzle based. It's an important distinction otherwise someone just making a game with XWings can throw in tons of eye candy (and have) and produce yet another bland space rail-shooter. It was quite a tactical game consisting of two core mechanics, simple energy management and target group selection. All that wrapped up in a Star Wars theme-park experience.

Very simple video showing the game:
thanks for the vid.
Of course, I know nothing about the upcoming Xwing game, but I was hoping for something a bit more detailed in the game mechanics/"physics" areas. They probably decided to use the KISS principle and as the description states to go for the feel of SW snub fighter battles. I would not be surprised if some individuals/groups create some new rules with more detail and complexity (hopefully, not approaching Birds of Prey mechanics though that would be interesting! LOL)

The thing with the original X-Wing game was the novella that came with it AND the story that also went with the Prima Guide book that you bought separately. It was the same way with the Tie Fighter game as well.
You had Keyan Farlander in X-Wing and Maarek Stele in Tie Fighter! Main those were the days that helped waste my college education; along with Air Warrior and Warbirds.

"Tie Fighter" is the best one of the whole series IMHO. It was simply great getting to fly a tie interceptor and a tie bomber. Some of those missions though were difficult as hell.
Nothing beats Tie Fighter for what it brought out in gaming in my opinion. Although my favorite was the Missle Boat and the Tie Defender they put in that expansion pack. Mainly because they never forgot to add in the small novela's with the expansions either. Sadly those days of high quality detail oriented gaming are long gone.

TIE Fighter was amazing. I bought the Windows 95 pack that had all 3 games I think. Why haven't they remade those games yet? Can you imagine playing those games online in modern servers with 64-128 players? People controlling larger ships? Oh boy I get giddy thinking about it...too bad no one likes space sims anymore

The most remake they did was the collector's edition that made them work natively in Windows (as opposed to DOS), since only XvT and XWA were designed for Windows, and in those cases it was 95 and 98. However, it's a sad truth that every X Wing/TIE game LA released were last CENTURY.

And you flew alongside Darth Vader himself - just don't 'presume to give him any orders' though, it kinda pissed him off a bit.

I also loved the story in Tie Fighter and it really rocked how you were personally decorated by Palpatine whenever you accomplished some major achievement.

I'm amazed that no-one has grabbed TiE Fighter and X Wing and updated the textures - seems to happen with every other game out there. Or have they?

Its kinda tough to get anything like that out of Lucasarts since they have such a stranglehold on the Star Wars game items and such. Or at least that is my impression of it. I am tempted to build a Win98 box just to get some X-Wing and Tie Fighter action in soon.
