Which is going to be faster, 8GB of Kingston HyperX DDR2 800Mhz (4 x 2GB sticks) or OCZ Platinum 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C7 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit? Is the MHz rating a factor (800 vs 1333) or is the physical amount (8 vs 4) a better determinant?

Thanks!

Depends on your board. I would buy the RAM it is rated for.

That said, to use 8 GB you need a 64 bit OS.

btw. some say it adds to stability to use only two RAM slots, so if you want 8 GB RAM, better go for 2 x 4 GB.

DDR2 and DDR3 arent interchangeable, they use different slots.
What Mobo - Ice ? you need whatever fits your board.

Get the fastest memory you can afford too. It's easy to down clock memory with no ill effects when OC because you are limited by your memory dividers. It's hard to OC memory very much. Gives you much more leeway when OC to get ultra fast memory. My memory is under clocked a little due to the few dividers that are available in the BIOS.

Lol, no OC-ing for me. It's just that I have a rig with 4gb DDR3 and just bought a setup that came with 8gb DDR2, so I was fantasizing about having 8gb RAM on my main PC for a while there. smile

well it is best to get lower latency the speed of the memory is a non issue.. latency wins the day..

From what I've read getting expensive super low latency RAM on gives a performance increase of 1 or 2%. I also asked on Overclockers forum and got the same reply. Not sure if it's worth paying double for it.

I would rather spend my money on more memory than faster memory. Also with the price of memory the way it is now, I would not even bother with 2Gb sticks. 4Gb sticks would be the way to go. Like kilo said, generally speaking, 2x4Gb memory kit will be more stable especially for OC, than 4x2Gb sticks.
