On our way back to Boston, on a cruise to Bermuda, I snapped these pics of one of the crew members of the Norwegian Dawn being med-evaced off our ship (appendicitis, apparently). This is a U.S. Coast Guard chopper out of Cape Cod.

These first two pics were taken from our balcony.

Crew member being hoisted up.

Crew member being loaded into the chopper.

The heroes ride off into the sunset.

Excellent surprise! How was the cruise? I've been on two Norwegian vessels, the "Spirit" and the "Gem"...if you've been on either of these ships, how do they compare to the Dawn?

We cruised Boston to Bermuda on the Spirit last summer. The Dawn is a little bigger than the Spirit. This is the 2nd time we've sailed on the Dawn. The first time was NYC to Bermuda 3 summers ago.

The Gem and Dawn are nearly identical in size, though the Gem holds a few more passengers (for now). The Dawn is currently undergoing renovations and is adding another 50 suites or so. The new rooms are supposed to be ready in September.

We really like Norwegian for the "Freestyle Dining" (being able to eat anytime you want instead of having fixed times for dinner).

The weather was perfect all 7 days except for a half day of rain on our first full day at sea back to Boston. Also, the seas were a bit rough that day (12ft).

Can't wait to go back!

Cool pics!

What I find astonishing is, that they had to use the winch, I thought a ship of that size would have a landing-platform for Helis.

Yeah, the ship is only a "mere" 980 feet long. No room for a helipad.

When the Captain made the announcement, the first thing I thought of was: "where the hell is it going to land?" because I couldn't think of a single spot on that ship that would be big enough.

Even so - Its often safer to hoist - You need a good Ships crew to pull off the landing on a civilian ship

Not to mention that many ships don't have a landing pad that's rated for a 20K+ pound helo.

Cool pics Lee, when we did our family cruise a few years back out of Tampa a crew member had to be evaced as well. They didn't allow us up on the back deck so I never took pics.

The Sea Hawk is such an awesomely cool helicopter, and it looks great in USCG colours!
