They're big, heavy, they don't have a lot of downforce or grip...but they're pretty fun.

Bumping is encouraged at tracks like Daytona/Talladega, but it's not really needed at Indy. And of course only on straights, never in corners.

Driving these is all about managing and maintaining momentum. Think about the fast, sweeping corners you've driven in other series on other tracks. Now, imagine being in a fast, sweeping corner almost all the time - trying to balance between going fast and going into the wall. :P

What I would say regarding bumping, Is that if you dont have experience bump drafting then dont even try it. You can almost guarantee it will end in tears! driving

A note on the setup: it's neutral with a slight tendency to understeer. Can it be tuned to be faster? Absolutely, but with a casual fixed setup race like this there's no need. It'll be pretty hard to spin this car out if you can keep it off the curb in the corners.

It's pretty quick for the first 3-4 laps and then the "good" wears off the tires and you'll have to treat the car with respect or you WILL push up into the wall.

Still, it should make for good racing - I ran a public race with it today and was still able to have some great battles.

I'd love to race this, but my Air National Guard base is having an ORE (operational readiness exercise) that I can't get out of. More of that "real world" crap getting in the way of my simming...lol.

Downloading the mod anyway so I can play during practice races. It's a huge file so I can't really pick my car just yet since I haven't seen them. wink

This is where practicing on the server is crucial. Bump drafting AI ALWAYS ends in tears because they seem to love to brake check you. However, practicing on a server, it might be a good idea to try gentle bump drafting...and like Lugnut said ONLY IN THE STRAIGHTS! Never run up fast on a car and slam his bumper. This will mostly end up bad for one or both of you. If you feel yourself in a good draft and fast approaching a car in front, drag the brake a little to gently connect to his bumper. Be aware of the front car and if he starts to get squirrely or a little sideways, get off his bumper. Also be aware of the corners. Near the end of a straight if you're hooked to a bumper, drag your brake a little to disconnect. Don't lift off the gas unless something's going majorly wrong...just press the brake pedal a little. Letting off the throttle will lose a lot of momentum you had.

During the recent Skoda racing we did, I had an awesome start and I forget who I was behind but I bumped drafted him all the way to T1 and we gained a couple positions.

Quick question, installing the mod now. Do I install it to my desktop (default) or to my rFactor folder?

From the desktop. When installing, it will give you the option to install as part of your rFactor installation, or as a free standing install. Pick the latter option. To keep it "legal", you're supposed to copy the rfactor.exe from your existing, paid for, rfactor install.

Yep they're all the same. Always do a stand alone install and I don't believe you have to manually copy any executables, the installer will do it for you. However, you can copy your profile and controller folders over so you don't have to start with a blank slate completely.

Onboard lap, 50.045 laptime, run on the server this morning with the fixed setup. Should give an idea of how to get around the place for those that aren't familiar.

Not one of the free setting that the mod allows. Hopefully in rF2 we get a free settings checklist instead of the set options.

No, not that at all..setup's pretty stable and solid. I ran some laps today and even with the %$#&*'d up FFB that I get for some reason with the VHR mod, I could get to within .2-.3 of the time you posted in the video.

I just like having that "tuneability" is all...guess all those NASCAR Racing years have me spoiled.

Well you shouldn't pass up a chance to just drop in and race if you have the time. biggrin

Besides, based on the entry lists of previous VHR's we might need everyone behind the wheel we can get.

under graphic options in your username PLR file, for example jdbecks.plr

C:\Program Files (x86)\rFactor\UserData\jdbecks

what your plr file will look like;

"Rearview="1" // 0=Off, 1=Center and Side, 2=Center only, 3=Side only (virtual mirrors only, in-car mirrors are on/off)
Allow Rearview In Swingman="0"
Virtual Rearview In Cockpit="0"

to add virtual mirros, Change the 0 to 1

"Rearview="1" // 0=Off, 1=Center and Side, 2=Center only, 3=Side only (virtual mirrors only, in-car mirrors are on/off)
Allow Rearview In Swingman="0"
Virtual Rearview In Cockpit="1"

heh, before the screenshot i already modified the plr. even put
Allow Rearview In Swingman="1"
Virtual Rearview In Cockpit="1"
i don't know how's named that view i showed in the screenshot, but it isn't the cockpit one. cockpit shows various instruments and it haves a really more closed FOV. and the TV Cockpit is roof view who shows the hood, just like the POV in the video posted here in this topic. so i already have virtual mirrors in cockpit and tv cockpit, but can't enable them in this view frown

change the fov from auto to 55 in the menu, check to make sure your file is renamed as a plr not name.plr.txt

If you want to move that view back, you can use this camera file....allows you to put the view in a more normal dirving position.

It's probably my wheel (an old one), but VHR has the worst FFB of ANY mod I've tried for rF in the past couple of years. I've tweaked RealFeel as much as I can, and it still sucks.

If you're using the fixed setup on the server, there won't be any real adjustment. I did the 50.0 with that.

It's all about learning the line, where you have to lift, when you can get back on the throttle, and just maintaining a smooth line through the corner.

downloaded it, Im now around the 52.010 mark, so lost about 1.5 seconds on average of my laps. I think Im coming of the accelerator to abrupt and loosing to much speed, as when I gently throttle back I hit the real low 52's times.

Watch lugnuts video, I was in the 52's until I watched it and I instantly got into the 50's.

Ran my first laps in these beasts since the last vHR race I entered in here today... Made a 51.0 before smashing into the wall and giving up... Nice job on the set up lugnut, it's very stable and I think I can push a fair bit with it...

Another fantastic finish between Birdski and Darren in the last practice race tonight.
Darren's winning time: .003 - the width of 1.5 bricks! In the Indycar race back in May
Birdski just edged out Darren at the line.

To be continued. smile

Wow, what a finish! Birdski probably could have won had I not got him sideways in one of the restarts...heh. Sorry about that BTW...I thought I could push you but then I saw you sideways so I let off really fast. smile

The last race I was almost driving on the fence when somebody got loose in a corner and slid up into me. No worries though, rubbin' is racin'! Great fun tonight!

Not really a problem ferli after the first race. Huge drop in your ping after the first one. I was watching the server and your pings were comparable with the other European participants, and nobody was complaining of chopiness. All's well.

There was some good racing in the practices last night; definitely hope to see the same come Saturday. Plenty of awareness, plenty of room given. That's how online racing should be. While I definitely had fun winning the 25 lapper, I had more fun coming from the rear to finish 3rd in the shorter race before it. wink

There were some comments on TS last night about how tight the car would get; I want to address that to see if I can help out.

I've updated my video, adding in some annotations. Feel free to pause it as the text bubbles appear if they're going too fast.

It's really no different than any other car on any other track - when exiting the corner, you never want to apply the throttle until you're sure you won't have to lift off of it again. If the car is drifting out toward the wall, either you didn't get a good angle turning into the corner, or you're applying too much throttle too soon on exit.

Also remember that these cars are just as affected by aero - if you're behind someone on the straight you'll be carrying a lot of speed slipstreaming behind them. Be ready to lift (and possibly use a small amount of brake) before they lift for the corner. This serves two purposes...one, you won't ram them into the wall because you still have it floored while they're slowing for the corner...and two, the extra speed and the loss of aero downforce from following someone will send you right up the track if you don't.

As the tires wear down you'll need to lift earlier, lift for a longer period of time, etc. to keep the car down...but it CAN be done. Just pay attention to what the car wants to do and don't overdrive it.

Well there's certainly no substitute for practice. wink

I've definitely learned that lesson moving over to road course racing with SCES. The vast majority of my sim racing experience is still oval-based, so my road racing skills are still developing. Any success I have over there is directly attributable to the amount of practice laps I run before each event, because it sure isn't natural ability. biggrin

Congrats to Lugnut for the win...and setup. Thanks for hosting doug. I had a decent race and even got to race with Stewart a bit during the middle of the race or so.

Regarding the wreck on the restart around lap 24. I'll put my hand up and say sorry to those affected by the wreck (Alex, Steve, Rhino, ?) In my defense, there was a bit of an accordion effect going on (quickly and then slowing down) which caught me out. In any event, I was too close to Alex. Sorry.

Even the real drivers mess up.

Boy, the first third of that race was rough. Definitely not our finest performance as a group, that's for sure.

I made my first mistake of the day in not realizing how the qualifying format worked - oops! Had the chance to improve on my laptime and missed out. Oh well. wink

Still, the first 30 laps were entertaining, if harrowing. I gotta admit, the wreck between Rhino, Birdski, and myself didn't help matters. I was riding behind Rhino with no intention of passing, but Birdski was pushing me down the straight.

I realized too late he wasn't going to back out in time for me to avoid hitting Rhino so I tried to make a quick dive to the inside, but got hooked and turned up into Rhino.

The car wasn't quite the same after that - coming to the yellow I could tell there was some pretty major damage because the car wasn't steering right. But it got mostly repaired in the pits, and the car felt "okay", if a bit tight.

As the race moved onto and past the midpoint it became clear it was down to Darren and myself. I thought I had enough to put a gap between us but it became clear that DB was the faster car. I checked my laptimes and sure enough I was around 4 to 6 tenths a lap off where I had been before. The damage was keeping me from really getting the car to grip in the corner so I was having to slow down a lot more than normal to keep it at the bottom of the track.

I made the ground up on pit stops, though. It seemed like I was coming out with a 3 to 5 second gap on Darren every time we left the pits, but he always managed to erase it pretty quick. DB, I don't know if you were just patiently riding behind me after that or what, but I was sure you were going to go around me at any minute.

On the next to last stint I realized I was going to have to stretch the fuel in order to only make it on one more stop. Since the car was, due to damage, understeering more...I was having to burn more fuel to get speed out of it. So, I eased up a bit and just conserved fuel. I managed to stretch it enough to make it, and stopped as soon as I was in my pit window. DB went on for another lap, and when he came back out I was nearly 5 seconds ahead.

But man did he close it down fast. With just two laps to go DB was right on my bumper and looked to be pushing hard. I saw him smack the wall between T1 & T2, but it didn't slow him down - he was right back on it down the straight.

I held the gap all the way around, and on the final lap going into T3 I thought disaster had struck - rFactor minimized to the desktop just as I was starting to turn into the corner. I still have NO idea why; with nothing but rFactor and TS3 running it shouldn't have. I always kill all my other processes before a race.

It took a moment to realize the game was minimized rather than crashed, and as soon as I did I clicked the icon to bring it back up. I was on the bottom of the track between 3 & 4, with Darren just ahead. I jumped back into the gas, sure that my chances were over, but I started pulling in on DB as he slid up the track in T4 and passed him by as he scraped the wall on the straight. I have to ask, DB - did you just lose it or were you being charitable? biggrin

It was a fun race in the end, though. I hope the new drivers that started the race but didn't finish will stick with us here. Get some more time behind the wheel, get familiar with how it all works...because win or lose, this is one of the best ways to spend time on a computer. wink

Yes I did enjoy it, I got confused at the begining and made a few mistakes by not understanding the rules properly and got a few penelties which lead me to being -3 laps behind the next car, had a little damage from riding into the wall so thought I would reitre instead of getting in anyones way.

Since practicing on this mod and playing oval on iracing I really enjoy stockcars! infact its all I have been playing on iracing. I got my fastest lap today on qualifing of 51 seconds odd which I was pleased with biggrin I would defiantly race again with you guys...someone has to be the tail end charlie!

That was am amazing last few laps. I could catch you pretty quick but soon as i got out of the draft you were almost impossible to pass and i didn't want to risk anything foolish. I was pushing as hard as i could for the last two and was hoping to be close enough to try something but i slapped the wall as you saw. Somehow the richochet actually helped me carry some speed and unexpectidly gave me half a chance going into T3. I managed to get my nose in front but i was a little hot and it was always gonna be a tough call to hold it to the line. Next thing i just saw your car vanish and i thought i'd discod. I took my eye off the ball for a couple of seconds as i checked to see what happened and slid way too high in T4 hitting the wall again. Sudennly you reappeared in front of me and it was too late. It was my mistake but even without that i'm not entirely sure i could have held it anyway. A very well deserved win Chad, you were awesome today - especially in those pitstops wink

Definately a rece of two halves but very enjoyable as always. Well done to everyone who got round and great to see the new drivers getting stuck in. Well done guys!!

Ouch! We'll miss you Pumbaa frown

Make sure you get some rest my friend. I fractured my taibone in a cycling accident a few years ago. It was pretty darn painful. Stupidy i continued training and didn't let it heal properly so occassionally it still gives me grief from time to time. Look after your arse, it's pretty important - especially for a sim racer! biggrin

Great race today. Even if I did screw it all up by getting a drive through for speeding. Up till then I was racing hard with Saghen for 4th place and it was a blast! I was kind of hoping we would get a yellow when I went a lap down but it was not to be lol. All in all a great fun race and it was good to see some new blood on the servers. It means I'm not the new boy any more!Welcome guys and good luck in your future races!

well, even when i was marginally slower than the rest of the pack i managed to finish the race completely. i was involved in a pair of incidents but somehow i got the car under control and didn't ran off the track. sadly in a pitstop around the lap 70 i got and stop and go and a drivethru who put me really way back of the lastest places. still i accomplished the first part, ending the race in one piece. i guess i'll just have to build more speed.
also hope you guys didn't got any trouble overlapping me, i tried to hold my line in the best way possible when i saw the blue flags.

Let's see. "R" is for race, right? No...?! hahaha

Congrats on the win Chad and good job of staying out of trouble.

Somehow I knew Darren and henny would be upfront in this race.
They always seem to do well in our VHR stock car events!

As Stewart said, welcome to GEEE, jdbecks, and Domestos. Welcome back ferli.

Thanks to everyone for participating, and we'll do Homestead next time.

Last lap of the race...

Chad's rFactor minimizes (still can't figure how that happened).
Darren thinks it's a disco, then connects to the wall.
Meanwhile I'm thinking, "Oh God! The server crashed on the last lap! Noooo...."

hahaha

lol - the life of a server admin

I'm glad it was just minimized and not totally crashed. I've had bad luck of that sort years ago when I ran leagues in the Papyrus sims.

I lost a league title because of it actually - came up 7 points short at the end of a season. One race, I was leading and my ISP went down for maintenance (I changed providers the next week), and another race I was top 5 and the game locked up.

If either one of those had gone differently, it would've made the difference.

It all started well enough with myself, Lugnut and Rhino trading the lead for the first 20 laps or so in tight formation with I think Henny, Darren and Alex ready to pounce. Admittedly I was pushing the issue more than I should have at that point in the race. Going down the back straight it was my intention to draft push Lugnut inside of Rhino as we had done so many times before. Upon review I "think" Lugnut looked like he wanted to stay behind Rhino into 3 so he backed out a fraction of a second earlier than I was expecting and myself a fraction too late to realize what was happening. Sure as snot I bumped Lugnut right into Rhino making him spin badly and for reasons unknown I grabbed 2 gears in a fit of panic blowing myself up in a ball of flames. Game over.

My apologies to both of you.

No worries Birdski. After starting on pole, I really wanted to lead yet knew that since we were doing 100 laps, I really should back off and save my car for the end. This latter strategy really seemed like a good idea when Birdski, Lug, and Alex were really racing hard for the first 2 sequences. The only reasons I was passing anyone that early were due to massive runs I was getting. Going into the turn of the incident, I saw both of you had a big run on me, so I was planning on going 3/4 lanes high into the turn and let you both by. After the wreck, I still had a decent car and could have competed, but 2 more wrecks tangling with the back markers really messed my car up. I could only do about 188 tops down the straights. All in all, a good race that I learned what I need to do better to win next time!

Doug, any chance we can do custom skins for the next race?

i have a question: do you always use the sprint cars for the races, or do you mix up? it should be hilarious to do a truck race.

We did a truck race at Bristol last year. Wasn't that well attended. We would do more (some) other than Sprint Cup if there were drivers.

i have to learn the tracks, because here in my country we don't really watch too much nascar (even when i get lots of transmissions in speed) but for the record, my first racing game was bill elliot's nascar challenge for the NES. the hilarious thing is that the game was from a cockpit perspective (and it had custom setups) , so when i saw VHR i wondered about how much advancement we have now in racing sims.

Maybe trucks at Richmond or Iowa? I would say between the two, Iowa since its banked and is a little more forgiving.

VHR legends and the IROC cars are the most challenging ones on that mod. i would like to see some beginner races in the nationwide cars too.

Man, that seemed to be a lot of fun. I really want to try racing online with you guys!
Hm, can we do short track for the next VHR event? Maybe Dover or Martinesville?

Thanks for the kind words guys...

I'm recovering but not fast enough... I'll get there though...

As for the future I'd like to see a race in this mod around Montreal or Watkins Glen... smile
