I played around with the labels.lua file yesterday and came up with a little 'mod' that makes the labels less 'gamey' and less immersion-breaking.

What it does:

* All unit labels, friendly and enemy, are displayed in grey, no more divine IFF.
* Air unit labels show type, distance and pilot's name within 3.000m, type only within 6.000m.
* Ground unit labels show type within 2.500m.
* Naval unit labels show type within 10.000m.
* Weapon labels show type within 4.000m.

You can see that the distance the labels are shown in general has been drastically reduced and that ground unit labels don't show distance anymore. I've flown a couple of missions with these settings and they worked quite well. No more instant, detailed information of everything in a xx mile radius around you, but still less frustration with invisible units than without labels. You still get lots of information but especially for ground targets you have to get pretty close, well within range of many threats.

You can download it here.

Unzip the file and place it in the ...\Eagle Dynamics\Ka-50\Config\View folder.

Backup the original file first!

I usually simply rename the original file to something like Labels.lua_ORIGINAL, this way you can easily revert back to the standard labels.

EDIT:

Ooops.... just noticed I've uploaded an older screenshot where the ground units still show distance. Well, just imagine you can't see the distance... wink

Wow, it's great.
Thank you.

I highly recommend this one.
Thinking limitation of graphical representation in BS, this is a mandatory.

Nice work though.

Should help people get to the no label stage

PB - stumbled onto the same thing forum post

I've leaned mine out a bit further to turn off labels fully on nearby objects. I also turned off weapons altogether.

I really like the use of grey! I had modified my original edits to use a sort of "dark green" to get the same effect.

Cheers,

You sir, should get a few nesterov medals for this.

The standard labels are hideous, but it's not easy to spot stuff either, esp those nasty little manpads in the forest.

I map labels to my hotas and am trying to use them less and less, so your file is a godsend.

Very nice. I tell you, I am almost to the point of having used up my practice on your excellent Tutorial 01. I was thinking I might need to go in and edit it to make them fight back soon.

If you ever make missions (or, gasp, campaigns), I'll be first in line for them. I was thinking how awesome your tutorial was, and how it would be cool if someone would set up a system of, say, 10 basic missions, each building on the previous ones, so it is a fun-learning mini-campaign, but it helps you a lot with the missions.

Something like: in the 1st one, you have to ferry something to a commander...you get to know the craft, must use basics; take-off, landing, forward flight. You don't go very far, from one base you hop to the next. Then maybe you are coming back, and you are suprised by some sort of minor attack; you don't have weapons, but you must use hover, counter-measures, and slow-winding movements to get through the terrain and reach your base (maybe the normal way is now blocked, so you have to cruise through some woods and mountains/large hills, and if you go in the open they will SAM you down).

It is just an idea, but I was thinking of how great it would be. Your Tutorial really was the inspiration, same kind of thing but drawn out, so you don't BLOWED things up in your first mission. You slowly work your way along, having fun, learning systems, and cruising through the "Trainer Campaign."

I tell you, if I knew more about using the editor (and had more motivation to learn it), I would make a 10-20 mission mini-campaign.

Anyway, thanks for the Tut01, and these cool labels. I am going to check them out tomorrow with my (now fully programmed) X-52Pro!

Gonna try this. I been running with labels off, but it's too much going on with a 2D computer screen and everything on low running at 20-10fps to not have any info like this available. I'd like to try some rocket runs without being confused at what's ahead of me. Standoff stuff can get boring.

edit: I switched the colors over to 100, 255, 100. That's pretty close to the HUD so it looks like it's part of the display system. Nice. Anyone know the exact color of the green HUD currently? Where's that located, anyway? I might tweak that for better visibility in bright sun in the no-cockpit view.

Anyone still has this file? The download link is broken and I just reinstalled Black Shark, and I liked this tweak very much smile

If you follow the link in schmeeling's post to another thread on this forum, you'll see he posted the contents of his .lua file in the post, so you should be able to cut and past (backup the original first though!!).
