Hi everyone,
I have been playing motogp 08 with keyboard for a while and I was wondering what controller do you use for your motorcycle games? I was thinking about using microsoft sidewinder force feedback joystick. What do you think?

See my PM for a detailed answer to your PM. Basically I'm suggesting to use a gamepad since you'll need dual sticks.

I guess *if* there was a software that lets you create a virtual controller in Windows which maps two separate USB Joysticks into a single device (so the game would recognize them) that would also be an interesting solution.

But a single stick is hard to use if you want full manual control over everything.

Hey, PPJoy can do this!
http://wiki.mechlivinglegends.net/index.php?title=PPJoy_for_using_multiple_joysticks

So basically, it may be worth a look to get two similar sticks, one or both with twist rudder axis. Then I would mount them base-to-base so that the actual sticks are sideways in front of my desk like that

--||--

The right stick's twist axis would serve as a throttle grip. Steering could be left forward/right forward. In theory with the sticks mounted like that the triggers would be about in a position where you can use them like a handbrake or clutch lever with the pinky and ring fingers of each hand. You'd need two buttons for shifting somewhere (heck, if possible move that to a third device near your foot?)

I guess if you really want to self build there are indeed some fancy solutions possible with this approach. I might just look into this...

You'll want a controller with 2 thumbsticks and triggers to get the most out of a Bike sim...

I'm using a xbox controller converter from ebay to convert my original xbox controller into a USB connection. It was less then 10 bucks back then and the software that came with it allows for 360 controls to be used as well... I use one stick for steering, one for throttle and the triggers for front and rear brakes...

If you already have a PS3 controller you can plug it straight in (so I've been told), but if you have a 360 controller you'll need the software which you can download for free, I'll need to do some checking to let you know where from though...

You don't need any special software for the 360 controller.
Just plug it in, wait for windows to detect new hardware.
If windows fails to see it do a windows update with it still plugged in and there will be an update for it available.

Not every 360 is compatible with windows. At some point M$ started making them with the internals that would work with a PC. I've been looking for a controller that has the 'Windows statement' on it. So far no luck, they're all the old ones and they do not work with a PC.

Ah so that's where the software comes in handy then...

If you have a wireless 360 controller, just get a wireless receiver for the pc. Cheaper than a controller, lets you run wireless and works great.

Thank you very much for your inputs guys.

BTW Have you all heard of a actual motorcycle handlebar type controller called "Xccelerator Motorcycle Controller" or "Xccelerator Motorsports Controller"? It is made for PS and PS2

If any one have this controller, I would like to know how well it performs. Can it be used with PC?

Thrustmaster freestyle controller is made for PC....or was...and it seems like it is working to PS2 also.
You might find them on ebay or amazon from time to time.

Don't confuse it with the snowboard control.
