Oooh, forgot all about this one! I'm in the mood for something just like this. Didn't remember it being free to play, that's a bonus.

WOW! This looks like this may very well be my very first MMORPG! If only, they would merge this with a Mass Effect game play I would be in geek heaven!

Downloaded the game today, which is the open beta at this point. About 6GB in 5 files (save all to the same directory and then hit the install file). The download was FLYING, all files going at a nice pace considering they were all coming at the same time. Tomorrow accounts are kept but characters are wiped.
Pretty standard space sim, like X3 or Freespace. HOTAS or 360 controller options built in, as well as kb/m which seems to be what it's mainly centered around. Controls easily changed in menu just clicking the control and hitting a button. 2 sets of key/button to each control, so you can mix your set ups.
Flying around is nice with the stick, but for combat, which is the usual "shoot the cursor" deal and fairly fast, the best combination seems to be the throttle on the stick with some well assigned buttons, but directing the ship and fire with the mouse. The stick was just too slow to use, even with the crosshairs locked in place. The mouse gives you the freedom that I think will be necessary, at least at this level.

Pretty game, almost as nice as X3:TC, in fact, better in some areas. Just the right set of options. Strange, but the game looks much better than the cutscenes, which look like basic animation almost. "Docking" at the stations is a screen where you work your menus, like most games, no out of ship walking around.
This could really be a lot of fun, especially for the price tag. I wonder if it will last and be worth playing if you don't spend much on the premium content?

A nice cockpit view. Movement is not newtonian, btw. Again, like X3 or Freespace. There is also a ship view, far better than X3, or a HUD only view. The cockpit is nicely done. Looks like one out of Independence War or Evochron.

Thanks for posting. So someone playing with a proper hotas setup is likely to get owned by other folks using a mouse? That's a bummer.

Cockpits sure look nice, as does the interior of that ship. Might try it out, if mainly to fly around.

Negative on TIR, didn't do anything for me. Didn't see a "look" function either, but maybe I missed it?

I'm no expert on it or anything, but I don't see how if using a stick alone that you could keep up with someone guiding with a mouse. The ships react fairly quickly, but to do that and put the crosshairs on the targeting lead icon effectively seems far fetched.

Character creation is right out of Eve, and oddly enough my character right away looked like mine from Mass Effect. LOL
Noticed a "frak" in there, and seems like some kind of Star Wars reference somewhere or another too. A lot of good influences in the game.

It's out. Cranked it up yesterday for a little while and it updated to the full game from the beta. Re-created character and started the intro again. Didn't try it today. It was running a little laggy yesterday, whereas the day before it was fine. Not too bad, but slow in parts. I assume they're taking a beating with people getting on.
